#68040 & Toaster 2.0
7 messages in this thread
I am having trouble with my toaster 2.0 and a progressive 040 @33MHz.
It is working fine, but it is about 2 minutes slower than my GVP030 at
50MHz. on a texture mapping rendering.
Any suggestions?

Would that happen to be Fractal texture? Because if it is then from the way
I understand it there is nothing you can do since the 040 has to software
emulate transendental (sp?) functions of the FP which aren't Hardware
present. Have you tried to compare scenes without textures or at least
another texture?

Javier, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Lightwave is
designed to take advantage of acellerators with co-processors. The bad news
is that there is no floating point co-processor on the 040 board, any
operation which makes good use of it will be slower without one. It has
been well documented on this forum and in Amia publications that texture
mapping is much slower on the 040 than it is with an 030 w/co-processor.
Javier,
The 040 is going to be slower on functions such as fractal noise and bumps.
Make sure that you are running the FP version of LightWave (click on the
about button and if it doesn't say "fp", you are running the slower
version) If you are running the slower version, you need to rename
LightWave.fp as LightWave (see Toaster Tricks colum in Avid – March or
april issue). There is a new LightWave in the works which will take better
advantage of 040's and things will be MUCH speeded up.

Any idea of WHEN we could expect the next LW upgrade?
Interested . . . .

I'm sworn to secrecy, but let's say it should be before the end of the
year.
