That's pretty weird. Internal devices should be mounted internally for
stability and safety alone.
To run the CD ROM you would need a port manager for the port you connected
it to and MicroSoft's MSCDEX 2.2, and a CD ROM driver. If they aren't bundled
with your unit, you'll have to scrounge them up (MSCDEX, at least, is
easy–it's included in DOS6 and also downloadable from MicroSoft's driver
library). The CD ROM will require a specific driver for its make and model; the
manager must be specific to the port used.
Gloria. That setup sounds like a normal interal CD-Rom to me. My own system has
a small connector that goes to the sound blaster, That is your stetero out-put,
the large cable to your sound blaster should be a SCSI cable, This is what
works the drive. Step 1. does your system try to load a cd-rom device driver
in your CONFIG.sys file. If it does and that is not working (sYSTEM LOCKS UP OR
MESSAGE APPEARS CD-ROM NOT FOUND) I would call Gateway or creative labs. They
should help you set-up the jumpers of software to work. Your Autoexec.bat must
run MSCDEX if your config.sys is loading the driver succesfully and you still
can't access you drive then MSCDEX isn't loading properly. most likly it is
because you r using an old version of MSCDEX the new version is avilable from
microsoft (ver2.2) and it is fully compatabl e up to DOS 6.0. GOOD LUCK C.B.

I have a little problem and I hope, you can give me some clues on that.
A friend of mine is tring to connect a Panasonic 562 to a Creative Labs 16 ASP.
He tried the 'sbpcd.sys' driver as well as the 'cdmke.sys'. He always receives
a message like 'Interfaceboard or CD-ROM drive not ready'.
The drive seems to have power, the cable-connection is o.k.
Are ther any software-switches of the drivers, that must be set, like
port-adresses ? Do you have any idear, where the problem may hide ?

I really don't know I have never hooked anything up to my Sound blaster (pro
model 1330). But it is a scsi port so any scsi device should work. My drive is
a mitsumi that does not use the SCSI interface. I would try contacting Creative
labs, I do rember a drive for panasonic CDROMs on their BBS. The number is
Number 14084286660 This file may also have a readme file that will tell you
about jumpers or device drivers. I just rembered that SCSI drives must have a
Termator on the last drive (even if there is only one) The termonator is either
a jumper or a plug that goes somewhere on the drive. Good Luck. C. B. in Reno
