🙁 ACADR13 CRASHES ON EXPORT TO 3DS ALL THE TIME OR TAKES ABOUT TWO HOURS TO COMPUTE! IS IT JUST ME? THE NEW DXF FORMAT IS ALSO NOT COMPATIBLE. ANY HINTS ON HOW TO EXPORT MEDIUM SIZE 'ARCHITECTURAL MODELS' (1-2MB) QUICKLY, WITHOUT HAVING TO REVERT TO ACADR12 DXF FORMAT. 🙂 ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE WELCOMED ………………..

Ian: I'm not the ACAD wizard here but the standard procedure seems to be to use the 3DSOUT command. Is this the one giving you trouble? Phil Miller will probably be able to help you out, Phil you out there?… Oh, and by the way using all caps is considered shouting here on the forum, it is also a bit more difficult to read. – Bob Ritger

Bob, Sorry 'bout the shout I let someone else do the typing and I've now made him aware of the common coutesies of life. Meanwhile, yes it is 3DSOUT that's causing the problem. It may be a bug fixed by Patch C2, which hasn't been loaded yet. Any ideas if this might have fixed things in this area. BTW, Who is Phil Miller? He might be a useful person to talk to. Thanks for the response Ian

Ian: Phil is an architect, a writer (Inside 3D Studio) and a SYSOP here in the forum. His expertise in the integration and compatibility of 3DS with ACAD is what you need. I'll send him a note (his CIS address is 74710,3061 ) to make sure he catches your note. – Bob Ritger

Gary and Ian: Have you both loaded the r4c1 patch yet? This may do the trick, you'll have to get this from your dealer as it is not downloadable. I see Phil has jumped in, thanks Phil. – Bob Ritger

Hi Robert, Yeah, maybe Phillip (or Greg P) can shead some more light on the subject here is some email from Chri Van Oyen (100272,3665) on the subject it may help….I'm not a Acad user or fan…I think Acad is really an enhanced 2D shaper and lofter <g> ************************ To go from acad to 3DS, I suggest you look at the following export variable: FACETRES, which changes the mesh resolution when exprting from ACAD13, and this is especially true for all curved or bend objects. I have been using this for a couple of months, only in the beginning having some trouble. BTW you can also import 3DS files, change them without even loosing mapping and materials when exporting back to a 3DS file from ACAD13. Christophe CU GH in OZ

First, turn of Caps Lock – you're yelling! Next.R13's DXF file is readable by 3DS R4C1 and later. Alternatevily you could download DXF3DS.EXE form the forum which will convert to 3DS as a stand alone utility.(neither reads ACIS however). Next, Your exports sound like you're making a VERY dense mesh. ACIS entities are controlled with the FACETRES variable while arcs and circles are controlled by VIEWRES. Check out Chapter 11 of "Inside 3D Studio R4" for a lot more information. – Phil

Phil: Thanks for jumping in. The R4C1 patch corrected the r13 .dxf incompatibility, right? Was there any modification to how ACAD/3DSOUT generated files were read by 3DS? – Bob Ritger

>> The R4C1 patch corrected the r13.dxf incompatibility, right? Yes, R4C1 now reads all the entities within the DXF format that it used, in the manner it always has. (no new R13 entities though – you still need R13's 3DSOUT for those). >>Was there any modification to how ACAD/3DSOUT generated files were read by 3DS? I'm not sure what you mean here since 3DS is out format. Do you mean, is AutoCAD writing its 3DS files out any diferently? Well yes, to accomodate ACIS 3D Solids and Regions, but no in relation to anything else – in this regard it's the same as AutoVision 1's 3DSOUT ability. – Phil

Phil: Thanks for clarifying the R13 ACAD to 3DS story. You correctly interpreted my fuzzy question on how the files were handled by 3DS. Sorry for being a bit vague. – Bob Ritger

"THE NEW DXF FORMAT IS ALSO NOT COMPATIBLE" The best combination of R13 and R4 is R13 c3 and R4c1 or R4c2 (no difference between the 2). R4c0 doesn't read R13 files, and the DXFPCH file here is a minor version of the R4c1, but has the added feature that it can be applied to 3DS3. Problems between R13 and 3DS4 have been reported before – I'm hoping that they're getting taken care of by R13c3 and R4c2! Good luck!

I'll just throw in my experiences with r13-3dsr4 since I do the transitions all the time. When all else fails, do a DXFOUT and use the good old DXF3DS utility in this forum. It's not fast, but it sure does get everything the way it should be. I've had a hell of time with complex, precise engineering models in r13 coming in with their coordinates all off in 3dsr4. Anyway, dxf3ds always works for me… Brad

Hi Nik, Can I download the patch/es? Or do I call my A'Desk dealer here in OZ? CU GH in OZ

"Can I download the patch/es?" Hi Garry, Yes (the R13 stuff from GO ACAD) and No (the 3DS stuff is considered an "RMA" which requires the diskette with the serial number be returned to your dealer for new diskettes. Autodesk will send the dealer or customer the update.

Ian I left a message in the Autocad forum on exactly the same problem. Any complex ACIS mesh doesn't export. By chance I used the hide command and it exports very quickly. Used with the facetres sysvar and you can get the results you want but this seems like a very strange proceedure to have to go through. Rumer has it that the c3 patch will be out very soon. Hopefully this is the fix we are looking for. I'd like to here if this works for you should you get the patch before I do. I'll be happy to reciprocate. NDC
