#Emulators

Hello!!!
I would like to ask some questions… Is there an AMIGA emulator for
any other machine??? I remember seeing a file described as an Amiga emulator
on some PC boards, but as it was soooo small, I doubt it worked. I also would
like to know if there are emulators (for the Amiga) for these machines:
-MSX (old japanese computer, quite popular around here)
-ZX SPECTRUM (british computer… old, but funny…)
-ARCHIMEDES (a british RISC computer… This one I find hard to exist, but
since we're talking about an Amiga, you never know…)
That's all!
{}s, M.K.
Hi!
There's no real Amiga emulator on any other machine, the PC one was a
fake. There is an emulator for 680×0 based UNIX machines, but it didn't
support any of the nice things about the Amiga, like graphics or
Workbench.
There is a ZX Spectrum emulator that runs on Amiga's. I haven't seen
emulations of the Achimedes, or the MSX. (I don't know about the MSX,
what kind of processor and OS does it have?)

Hi!!
Yes, I knew about a ZX Spectrum emulator, but it was of no use, since it
couldn't read disks. I have heard of one that would load stuff from tape, via a
sampler in the parallel port…
The MSX was a japanese computer, with a Z80. It was like a small PC, since
it used the same disk structure, and also MSX DOS was similar to MS DOS…
Today MSX is the biggest japanese home compute, and there's now a MSX 3.0 being
planned, RISC equipped! The most recent MSX was built with a custom chip, and
it was faster than a 386DX.. Not bad, eh? I would be happy to get a MSX 1.0
emulation (16 colours, 256×192!!)…
Thanx!

The MSX sounds pretty cool!
That description of the early MSX sounds like another computer sold here a
few years back. I think it had a company name of Sanyo on it, so maybe
it's the same as your MSX.

Bob,
That'd be it. Sanyo and Yamaha and a whole bunch of others made MSX
computers. I have one sitting in the corner of the room, sulking! The
Yamaha, which I have, had superb MIDI implementation and a built in
sound-generator. Yamaha did some great music programs for it, then dropped
it in favour of their less-than-successful PC laptop thing. These days in
the U.K. you can't give MSX machines away. Japan is the ONLY place they
caught on.

John,
Don't forget that Philips in Europe was also a source of MSX machines.
Quite a few of the schools in the Dutch-speaking area of Belgiumn were
equiped with them.

Pete,
I had forgotten about the Philips machines; I also had a Philips CP/M /
MS-DOS luggable, but I actually managed to give that away to my brother-in
law! Now all I need to do is to find a home for the Nascom Z80 kit
computer, the NEC CP/M portable, the Yamaha MSX…….

John,
I have a CP/M emulator for the Amiga around here somewhere if you feel the
need 🙂
As to the Nascom etc. I believe there is a Computer Museum in Boston!
Pete Jones, flying on AutoPilot from Brussels, Belgium
Pete,
Clearing out the files yesterday, I came across all the manuals for the
Nascom and some listings of a program we had written for it to control a
very advanced speaker switching unit for the theatre company I used to
work for. We had to buy a memory expansion board to take us up to 16K!
Those were the days…….
John
P.S. My wife and her string sextet are coming to Brussels early next year:
they're all very interested in food, some some restaurant recommendations
might be helpful when you have a moment!

John,
Certainly. Will come back to you with a list. After twenty years in
Belgium, my girth is a witness to the good eating available 🙂
String sextet: are we speaking of Scarlatti, Couperin, Bach etc? If so,
would be interested in more details. The trip wouldn't involve the name
Tom Cunningham, by any chance?

I remember a US computer mag that years ago ran a cover piece on MSX and
predicted it would take over the US computer market. But the 16 bit
machines arrived in time to kill it off here, apparently. Point is, as an
8-bit computer system, MSX apparently maxed out the hardware. Sanyo sold a
PC clone (the 550 or some such) that wasn't MSX but ran a special version
of MS-DOS. Not very compatible with most IBM clones. A nifty computer for
its day, though, and it's still got a following. I nearly bought one ten
years ago.

Ron,
Yes I remember that one. It was still selling here at rock bottom prices a
few years ago, bundled with printer, software etc. I still see cries for
help from people who bought them in the magazines!

The MSX machines ran Z-80's if this helps…

Hello!
There sure is an emulator for the Amiga platform, and it supports almost all
platforms. It is called the Emplant by Utilities Unlimited. Right now it
supports the Mac and soon it will support the PC, Atari, Sega Genesis, Sun… I
have one in my 4000 and it works great! The number for Utilities Unlimited is
(602) 680-9006
Hello!
I've already heard of EMPLANT… I guess I'll wait a little bit more, because
I've heard the product was still a bit "buggy"… Can you tell me if it's
stable on your 4000? I plan to use on a normal A1200…Do you think it would be
possible to run stuff like PhotoShop, etc..???
Thanx!!! {}s. M.K.
The Emplant _was_ buggy at first. It is a very solid product now and I
have complete faith in UU. The PCMCIA A1200 version should be out by
years end, and yes, I do run Photoshop on my Emplanted Amiga.
-Jonathan
My Emplant Is very stable, and yes I'm running Photoshop 2.5.
Ben, Leigh's Computers
Ben, the latest color Emplant ads in the Amiga mags are stunners! Showing
Photoshop and something else. I've got an AMAX, but I want an Emplant!

Ron,
Yeah their new add is much better, but I would have had a screen shot
of the Amiga's WB pulled down half way to reveal the Photoshop screen! It
is really something to see!!
…AutoPilot Engaged…
-Paul-
Paul: I thought the same thing! Have the Workbench showing in a pull-down,
running with a different palette and in different resolution! Maybe UU
thought that would be confusing to ad readers. I think it would be
stunning, especially to non-Amigans.
— Ron Legro, Milwaukee
via AUTOPILOT (the only way to fly)
What ???? EMPLANT can multitask??? Are you joking??? I would like to know if
EMPLANT will be at least usable on my A1200 (no extra mem/processor)??? I don't
need it for SERIOUS use, just for fun (specially showing to PC owners…) Oh,
it would be great also to run, besides EMPLANT, a SOFTWARE PC emulator, at the
same time… Just imagine the scene: having 3 computers on the same screen!!!
Wow, the Amiga is surely the dream computer… I just wonder why it didn't
caught up in the States… See 'ya H.R.P.
UU recommends an MMU for running the Emplant, (They say that the 1200 will
run without it, just that the screen updates will be painfully slow.)
I think the minimum RAM your going to need is 4M Fast, in addition to the
2M chip.
I'm going to buy one of these myself!
Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming
How about the screen pulled 3/4 down revealing the Mac destop (from
Emplant) pulled 1/3 down revealing Windows or OS2 (from a 386 BB behind
it! Put that ad in Byte magazine and I bet it would sell a few Amigas!
…Steve
====>>> Motorola 68030 Inside <<<====
And you can be sure about that!! Oh, put also in other (boring) PC and Mac
magazines… It will blow their heads away…
H.R.P.
I thought I heard that the Emplant emulator (now giving you a Mac inside
your Amiga) had plans for an Archimedes emulator working in the same card.
Not sure, though.
There are also Atari ST and Commodore 64 emulators for the Amiga. Both
hard to find, though.

I have an Amiga 500 with 52MB SCSI hard disk. What can the EMPLANT give me?
Peter,
Sorry unless you add a card cage (Emplant is a zorro II/III card) and
an accelerator (Emplant REQUIRES an 020 or better) you can't use Emplant.
U.U. WILL be releasing a version of emplant for the 1200 that uses the
credit card slot, but that still won't help 500 users.
…AutoPilot Engaged…
-Paul-
Nothing, since the Emplant won't fit into an Amiga 500. It takes a card
slot as in the A2000, 3000 or 4000. Supposedly, a PCMCIA version will
arrive for the A1200 and possibly A600. Your only choice if you want to
run Macintosh stuff is to do what I do on my A500, namely, use an AMAX
emulator.
— Ron Legro, Milwaukee

What?? ARCHIMEDES emulation??? Oh God, who these people at U.U. think they are?
I guess they're magicians, because they've promised emulation for almost ALL
computing platforms possible!!! What next, a SGI Indy emulator? (well, this one
I would surely check out…) Oh, but the guy that suggested a MSX emulator,
well, I would surely appreciate it, because MSXs sold quite well here in
Brasil, basically because of the price.. It was very cheap, and it was
introduced at a time that monochrome computers were abound (Apples and XTs)…
The lastest I've heard of MSXs was a version 3.0, with used a custom RISC
processor (the Z80 will be kept for compatibi- lity, and also for buffering the
keyboard!!), it would have 22 channels stereo sounds, 16.7 million colours, bla
bla bla.. It would even run a version of OS/2… I'll try to find more about
it… Oh, the price tag was supposed to be around $500…
