The plot thickens <G>. I have a commercial pi type PS font (made with Fontographer 3.5, the trouble maker). Since it would not convert to Ppage with their conversion programs, I used TS and got all but about 7 symbols in Pp CG & PS form. SO I decided to try PageStream (sorry I still hate it & find the FontManger very confusing…maybe when V3 comes out). Nothing; only big black spaces, BUT I can get the WHOLE set in AE. Why? Does it read the PS file as a graphic? Is there any trick I can use to get them to work in PageStream? I know some letters have too many elements, thus no letter in the Pp version, right?. Gracia

Gracia; I too still find the font manager to be very confusing. Have you gone into the font manager via the global menu immediately after starting PgS, deleted all of the fonts and "added" them back? Personally, I find that doing so and restarting PgS seems to clear up the problems unless I actually have a bad font. -bill

Bill, Thanks, I'll try that. I know the font is good since I can get all but 7 of them in Ppage & in AE. I don't use PageStream oftem which probably explains why i forget how to do it. I'm hoping V3 will inspire me <G>. You're genius! It worked! I even got the extra "letters". Computer magic strikes again ;^}. Gracia

Thanks <chuckle> but rather than genius, lets just recognize that I have been using PgS pretty heavily for a number of years now. If you look at how PgS starts up (with something like SnoopDos) much of what you have to do with the font manager actually begins to make sense. As I view PgS, I suspect that it trys to "get a look" at about everything that may be used during program operation at startup time. My guess would be that this is done to improve performance when you are actually running the program (that is you do not have to wait while PgS loads and verifies import/export modules and the like). BTW, unfortunately the fact that a font do work with a program does not necessarily mean that the font is "OK." There is a great deal of information about fonts that is not necessarily looked at by every program and some programs appearently will "default" a bad parameter where others just fail. -bill

I'm a Ppage user. It also can drive you nuts with strange & wonderous problems. I do like the way PgS uses plain PS fonts which you can store anywhere (I've almost got it down <G>) & I like AE & TS. I would like an editor to go back & forth with like Ppage, but I guess I can use Ppages's editor & just import. When V3 comes out I'll really try to learn PgS. I'll try SnoopDos & take a peek. Thanks a heap again. I just love it when I solve a problem & something works. Gracia

Gracia; I also should have mentioned that in addition to years of experience with PgS, I have years of experience getting help from Michael and other users right here on CIS! Believe me that sometimes I bet others thought that they were dealing with a rock when trying to help me on a problem <g>. I too am looking forward to PgS 3.0 as from what I hear it will have everything that I have ever hoped for in a publishing program and then some. -bill

Bill, I have to agree, Amiga Forum on CI$ is the greatest! I lurked for 3 months learning all about POST and other goodies. I have a whole loose leaf note book full of advice. Gracia

Gracia; Yes, I almost scares me to think of how much CIS has been worth to me over the years. I know that the benefits of participating have far exceeded the on-line costs. -bill

Bill; You seem to be a thorough PgS user, and I was wondering if I could pick your brain for a second about fonts. I'm interested in downloading some fonts from the Soft-Logik BBS, and it seems they are all the Type 1. Are these usable by PgS as-is, or do I need to convert them to PageStream format via TypeSmith or some other utility? I've been given the impression PgS can use these Type 1 (PostScript?) fonts directly, but I have no idea how to use them. Thanks for any and all help! – Derek <<<< leaving the work to AutoPilot >>>>

Derek; When it comes to fonts I'm really not too knowledgeable. I mostly publish industrial training courses and the vast majority of font use is times and helvetica. Not only that but when I want something special now I tend to do the work in ArtExpressing, convert to a graphic and import to PgS. Now having covered myself for the potential errors <grin>, yes Adobe Type 1 fonts will work with PgS. In my personal experience, I feel that they are "too slow" for general use but I do use them for brochures, announcements and similar 1 and 2 page stuff. I have played just a little with TypeSmith to try converting the Type 1's to CG fonts but am not real successful in the process. I believe that it is more of a "printer" or "fontequiv" problem though. That is to say, TypeSmith seems to do the conversion just fine but when I try to use the fonts in PgS the screen display is fine and the print out is not what was expected. It has worked for me at least once and I believe that I made a "hand" entry in the PgS fontequiv table. Michael knows this area quite well so if I have "bum doped you" hopefully he will jump in and set things right. -bill

Derek: PageStream can use the Type 1 fonts directly. All you have to do is to download the fonts, uncompress them, put them in a new drawer, and copy that drawer into the PSFonts drawer. Then run PageStream. Go to the Global Menu -Set Save Paths option Click on the "Font Manager" gadget You will now be in the Font Manager, click "ADD" gadget A file requester will come up, locate your new drawer and click on it then click "OK"….this will add the font into PageStream's font system. Click on "Save Default" to save it, then click "Cancel" {i]/list (Sorry for the line noise) YOu should be ready to use the fonts. Mark @ Soft-Logik Publishing

Mark, since having upgraded to 2.2 (plus the patch to 2.22) and using PS Type 1 fonts (actually a whole lot of them) I am experiencing some problems with fonts in general. In most documents I did with PgS 1.8 the small fonts (and sometimes even the large ones) seem to have lost their width, i.e. the letters in a text object or text window are 'huddled together' on the first character. I have a few hundred fonts now in various formats (PgS, CG, CS, PS1). Do the font files have to have their original file names? I renamed quite a lot of them so the files making up one font have all the same name and just different extensions… // Chris coming in from Germany \X/ on AutoPilot 1.06………..

Mark's away today, so I'll answer this one. We have had a few problems with the sudden 'no width' situation. This is due to a messed up fontlist. If the font is CS Times, for example, go to the font manager, select its path, choose Update and Save Default. That should usually fix the problem immediately. Renaming files: no, you can call them anything you want. PageStream doesn't care about the font name. But if you named them after adding them to PageStream's font manager, it will no longer be able to find the font files properly. You must update that path before trying to use one of the fonts in it. Cheers, Michael @ Soft-Logik Publishing Corp.

Thanks, Mike glad I didn't mess everything up by renaming the files. Looking forward to 3.0 (have already ordered the upgrade) A LOT! :v) Any idea when it'll be out for real? // Chris coming in from Germany \X/ on AutoPilot 1.06………..
