Hey Guys, here amusing anecdote I was working on a complicated scene in r3. I came to the end of the work day, so I saved it. The next morning I came into work and opened the file to find that the a major piece wasn't there, as far as I could see. The program said it was still there, I could select it (no results), hide it and unhide it (for all the good that did, I couldn't see before OR AFTER I did these operations). I fixed the problem by merging the same object in from an earlier version and went on my merry way. Then it happened to the other artist in out group. The one correlation we could make was that it seemed to be the Highest object in the hierarchy. The sub-tree isn't effected in anyway, and if we merge the animation from the earlier version (as long as it hasn't changed) the tree and the animation remain intact. The two machines that this happens on are dissimilar but here are the spec: Tri-Star 486-33 Always SCSI controller Maxtor 210 SCSI Drive Diamond Speedstar 32 MB ram ProAudio Spectrum card Generic 486 66 #9GXI-TC Level 29 Adaptec 1542C Controller Quantum 545 MB SCSI hard drive 32MB Ram Pro Audiospectrum Toshiba internal doublespin CD ROM drive So, has anybody else had this trouble or is it evile elves in the night? Martin, if it happens again, (amazing vanishing parent node in a hiearchical tree), zip it up and mail it to me. I'll get the right people in QA to look at it. jonas[adesk]

Jonas, The same thing happened to me about a week ago. It was a single object with no links. It was listed as being there, and I could select it by name, but it would not show up on the display. I don't remember the details, but I think it happened after a merge but didn't notice for a few minutes that one of the merged objects wasn't showing up. I was just doing some tests on the file and didn't really need the AVO (Amazing Vanishing Object), so when I was done, I just reopened the previous file and went on my way. If I run into this again, I'll let you know. David

David, was the AVO(amazing vanishing object) invisible in the keyframer *AND* the editor or just the keyframer? When you render "force 2 sided" does it render? jonas[adesk]

>>was the AVO(amazing vanishing object) invisible in the keyframer *AND* the editor or just the keyframer? When you render "force 2 sided" does it render? If your thinking the normals somehow got flipped, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it was visible in the keyframer, and that it rendered with no problems. What I remember doing is going into the keyframer and noticing that an eye was displaced, so I went back to the editor to move it but could not get it to show up, and just wound up moving it in the keyframer. I discarded the modifications I made to the file and the next time it was opened, it was fine. This was 2 or 3 weeks ago, so I am a little fuzzy on it. David

David, <<If your thinking the normals somehow got flipped, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it was visible in the keyframer, and that it rendered with no problems.>> That was my thinking.. I've taken some calls when the object comes into 3ds from autocad, the mesh looks good in the editor but it looks invisible in *some* viewports of the keyframer. It turnout that the normals are reversed and when I ask them to Keyframer-Display-Geometry-*see through it all shows up. jonas[adesk]

Several of my collegues and I have had this problem over the last several weeks. In some instances the AVO won't even render, even though it's listed in the object list. In one bizarre case, all that would show up in the KF were some diagonal lines which OVERWROTE THE VIEWPORT BOUNDARIES. This turned out not to be a hardware problem, b/c I checked the bad file out on other machines. I zipped it up and e-mailed it to Gary Y. All he said was that the 3D object was corrupted, but that 3DS couldn't have done it. But I'm not sure what else could have. Frank Vivirito has a theory that this happens after shelling to DOS or Animator Pro, but so far I haven't tested this. This has been quite a problem for me.

Me too! However, I can see the object (it looks like a displayed 3D object while in the shaper), but I can't move it, rotate it, or see it upon rendering. And yes it will show up in the same manner in both editor and keyframer.
