I have been looking into why I am running out of memory.
I find that the phone book and calendar use alot of user memory in windows.
These are two programs I like to have loaded at all times.
Following is a small table I made using the MS sysmeter program (It is old
but I do think it tells the truth).
Program User Graphics
DTS Book 16% 5%
DTS Calendar 16% 5%
MS Word 11% 11%
Corel Draw 8% 6%
MS Publisher 6% 8%
MS Access 6% 6%
MS Excel 32% 18%
MS File Manager 6% 3%
MS Print Manager1% 3%
32% of user space that starts at 74% available is a lot of overhead for my
system.
I find that some times I can only load 1 program at a time.
Could you please look into this for the next release. I feel that a program
that
is designed to remain active during a Windows session should use as little
resources
as possible. Please don't get me wrong I am not complaining. I would like to
have
a more frendly program in the future. I am not changeing or running away. I
might
have to unload book and calendar from time to time to get work done though.

DeskTop Set uses 18-24% of system resources. Thanks for the note I will look

I was looking into buying Desktop set until I ran into this thread. Is that
last message on system resources correct? If it is, I ain't buying.

Yes – DeskTop Set does take up between 18-24% of system resources depending on
which modules are running. Sorry if this changes your mind about DeskTop Set.
Do keep in mind, however, that Microsoft is removing the resources limitation
in Windows 4.0 (due out early in 1995).

Early 1995, if true, means mid-1995, for a semblance of stability. Dang it, I
wanted to get DTS. What if I just have the calendar, alarms, to do list, and
the phone book features running—any decrease in those memory percentages?

DeskTop Set uses 18-24% of system resources. Sorry, there is no way around it
till the new Windows release.

I just ran a test on the DTS modules (one of the benefits of DTS is that it is
entirely modular). Address Book took up 4% or resources and Calendar 6%.
These are the two most major modules and I assume the most resource hungry. In
practise, you're never going to consume 18%-24% (or whatever the quote was) as
you are unlikely to run all the modules at the same time; you're just going to
run what you need, some of which you may opt to leave running, but most of
which you'll shut when you've finished with them.
I even hear a rumor that the forthcoming release (4.1b, due out very shortly,
as in within weeks) includes a utility that monitors all modules, whether or
not they are running, and reports when an alarm crops up in any one or all of
them. It is my understanding that this particular utility consumes 0% (zero
percent) of system resources. Doesn't get much more frugal than that.
As a long-time user, DTS is a very good bet, IMO. I haven't looked at much of
the competition, just Organizer, InfoCentral, Sidekick/Win and PackRat, but DTS
beats what I've seen. Try it out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
