#3DS import

Hi SYSOP,
I'm really very satisfied with 3DS and if they're integrating raytracing I'll
get happy for the rest of my life ( 2 months !!!). As a Industrial Designer I
rely more on perfect modelling & design drawings & model production, so I
modell on CAD/CAM systems like Bentley Modeller.
But there is one big problem, most of this packages use nurbs and acis based
surface boundary representation ( which is really great ! ).
But since 3DS can't import IGES, VDAFS or similar File Formats you're always
stucked to make animations and rendering on your system.
Isn't there any solution who to handle or exchange such formats?

as one alternative, Bentley can export DXF polymesh equivalents (which can be
loaded into 3DS). also, if using Bentley Microstation (nexus like addendums),
can export DXF with decent nurbs-mesh conversions.

But Bentley doesn't export polyface meshes when they are trimmed or booled.
That's the real bottle neck.
Of course I can export simple extruded surfaces, but when designing an
automotive design you use sparely extrusion or rotation.
With Bentley I can project curves on surfaces etc. and that boundary surfaces
can't be exported in DXF polygon format.
This seems to be solved only by VDAFS or IGES.
Oh I hope that 3DS will sometimes support one of this formats.

yes, it is.

you are correct. this is a dilemma. however, Microstation has had Nurbs in it
for a while and the 5.x (even 4.x_) NEXUS stuff was capable of fairly reliable
polymesh exports. do you have Microstation?

somehow, i think it will eventually as they seem to be getting into all sorts
of apps as standard.

Maybe the Autodesk IGES translator is the final solution.
I've got to checkit out,
or buy an SGI / Alias ( They import IGES and convert nurbs to meshes)
