#Framestores vs RGB
10 messages in this thread
Can anyone educate me about the relative merits of framestores versus RGB
files…
In working in ToasterPaint, I make ongoing saves as RGB files because they
contain more information. And when saving frames to disk from a Lightwave
animation, I've saved them as images, because the files are usually much
smaller than the standard 700K+ framestore size.
When is it better to use framestores?
Thanks
Barbara
Barbara,
I can't really tell you whether it is best to save your images as
framestores or as RGB files, although to my eye on my eqquipment
framestores seem to afford a a bit better image quality than RGB files.
However, it is worth noting that with ASDG's AdPro you can interconvert
framestores and RGB (IFF) files. You might try comparing the same image
saved as a framestore and as an RGB file using AdPro and reach your own
conclusions as to which affords the optimum combination of image quality
and storage size for your purpose.

Thanks, I'll do some experimenting.

Barbara,
I think that the main use for framestores is in the switcher. The format
is designed for fast loading.

Thanks for the info, Jim

Barbara,
With Lightwave 3.0 (if that's something that you are into) the framestores are
saved in compressed format that is smaller than the compressed IFF format that
LW saves out in rendering the frames. This certainly is an advantage for the
animator. Also, the framestores are much faster to get to videotape due to the
fact that they load in just about 2 seconds.
I have begun to save all of my images in framestore format for these reasons.
However, whenever Pegger is released I may switch to IFF saves that will be
automatically compressed via JPEG routines residing somewhere in the OS.
Just my $.02 worth.

Framestores are video images that need to be saved when you want to load
them from the Switcher. RGB files are computer images that should be used
to save Works-in-progress in TPaint or when you want to use the image in
another computer program. RGB files to save more info as they are "true'"
color images. Framestores are video images and therefore using highly
saturated colors (reds on yellow for instance) will cause color bleeding.
With 3.0, Framestore images are compressed and will save more space than
ther 2.0 722008 file size.

So if I'm creating frams from Lightwave that I will compile into an anim
using another program, it _does_ make sense to save them as RGB?
Thanks for your help.
Barbara
Yes, RGB has more data information. Imagemaster R/t has a special feature
called 'Trim' which allows you to save, smaller than normal, 24 bit RGB
files without being lossy like JPEG. I think Ben Williams said you can
save up to 70% on your hard drive by using 'Trim'.

Absolutely.
