Ian,
Thanks for the input. I'm debting between the Targa & the PAR. At this point
I'm leaning towards the 2000, although almost everyone online here seems to be
partial to the PAR! (I suppose the price difference plays a major factor).
Are you using the Targa for Rotoscoping? What size/brand IDE are you using?
Can you recommend a dealer?
Thanks much!

I've seen the targa 2000 and was very impressed with it as a NLE and output
device for video clips using Adobe Premier. I have not seen it used for the
uses most of us apply to the PAR and the MAX. I asked the people about this
and they (Truevision) said the 2000 is primarily being sold as a desktop NLE
system for computer video productions. While I thought it has excellent
quality I was told that it was only 640X480 square pixel output and the NTSC
only had a 640 horizontal resolution. The PAR and MAX are higher. 720 for the
MAX and 752 for the PAR. I use a FAST video machine that switches input
resolution but the DVE's are only 640 res and I can see the difference. When I
asked about using the Targa2000 for broadcast work as opposed to computer video
shows the rep said I can get an EDL and use it with my source tapes for an
online edit session for true broadcast quality.
I've been waiting to hear from someone using the targa2000 to see how they like
it for animation output. One thing is certain, it is very clean quality output
on computer NLE and played very smoothly.
Hi Scott,
I'm a Truevision, Autodesk multimedia and Sony and Panasonic video reseller. So
far I have 2 clients rendering 3DS animations using T2K and the IPAS 3D Star
with excellent results. Both clients also have Sony EVO 9650 and can render
frame by frame but prefer to use digital rendering directly to compressed JPEG
files.
What else can I tell you. It's a killer product, but it doesn't work alone –
make sure the rest of your system is up to par (pardon the pun).
Scott,
Haven't tried any rotoscoping yet so I can't comment on that.
I've used a variety of disks but the standard IDE I used was a HP 240Mb unit
and managed a transfer rate of 1200K/sec. Not good enough for Broadcast quality
but good enough for most others. You should get better results with a SCSI or
the newer Fast-IDE standard. I tried a Maxtor 535Mb SCSI but ony got 800K/sec.
Probably because I was only using a 16 bit Adaptec card rather than 32 bit.
As for a dealer, where are you ?

Ian,
Thanks for the advice. As for a dealer…I found one locally, but am
discouraged by less than stellar reviews. Perhaps I'll wait & see what the
PCI version looks like.

Ian, I talked to you in the Truevision forum last week. I was looking for
3DSTAR.?XP. Another question if I may: are there any tga to dvm utilities
developed yet that would work from DOS or Windows?
Wade,
Truevision is in beta on a TGA to DVM converter, running under Windows.
It works fine, and you could request it from Truevision if you urgently need
it.

Thanks Kevin.
