#Targa2000 news

For all of you who don't visit the Truevision section at MULTIVEN and are
interested in the Targa 2000 (and all of you interested in some shocking
comments 🙂
From Tom Ransom,
.
I can't comment on the capabilities of unannounced products. We are porting DVR
technology to PCI. We have not made any final decisions about the configuration
or capablities of the first products. Therefore any comments on speed and
capacity would be premature.
-and here comes the shocking part-
Re: Real software and OS – I think you will be pleasantly surprised re:
announcement of two new high-end editing packages for Windows in the next two
weeks from Truevision partners that address that part of the market. You should
know that we are not planning on supporting NT – VFW performance is not that
great – there is another 32-OS coming that promises better performance than NT.
.
How was that, sirs?

I wonder if they are referring to some new incarnation of OS/2.
Interesting news, thanks Ana!!

Warp is about to jump in the marketplace. It will come a lot sooner than
Chicago and maybe this could be the definitive OS/2, boys and girls <g> (I
really hope they were not talking about Chicago). I will be happy if they go
Warp or Workplace with their PCI boards. In fact, I am happy right now because
there is going to be a PowerMac version of the T2K (another advantage of having
multiple platforms 🙂
But as for OS/2 Warp, take a look at this:
* OS/2 Warp II, the premier Internet operating system which will be
hitting the shelves worldwide this Fall.
-> Built-in "One-Button" Internet Client (uses IBM's Global Network and SLIP
for seamless, worldwide access to Gopher, Telnet, e-mail, FTP,Usenet and WWW
resources.
OS/2 is the FIRST operating system to bundle simple and effective access to the
Internet into the base OS.
-> NEW 3-D look and feel (LaunchPad / WorkPlace Shell)
-> NEW "Plug and Play" (PlayAtWill) capabilities
-> NEW Win32s emulation and Windows For Workgroups support
-> NEW Multimedia Games API (DIVE) (being used in DOOM/2)
-> NEW performance optimization (4 meg memory footprint)
-> NEW built-in software/functions:
– Person-2-Person WorkGroup Enabling Software LAN or modem, supports
videoconferencing)
– OS/2 Compuserve Info Manager
– Advanced Graphical System Diagnostics Utility
– Integrated send/receive fax support
– Full Featured Spreadsheet, PIM, Word Proccessor, Database, and more!
-> improved 32-bit Multimedia subsystem (AVI, FLI/FLC, WAV, ReelMagic MPEG,
MIDI and CDROM-XA, CDROM-Audio)
-> System Object Model (SOM II) for faster development cycles
-> improved CD-ROM device support and accelerated SVGA support (includes easy
"AutoSense" installation tool)
-> extremely broad device support for non-IBM PCs and devices
-> state-of-the-art interactive Tutorial software
-> same old rock-solid TRUE 32-bit multitasking seamless OS/2, DOS, and Windows
3.X application support.
.
Is this going to work? According to beta testers: yes. All these features have
been demoed publicly by IBM without any NDA.
Things are starting to look pretty good. Let's hope IBM really takes the
marketing muscle to work this time. (BTW, Chicago has been delayed to 1995).

Fantastic!! I really hope something like OS/2 takes the stage. NT is _WAY_ to
system intensive for no good reason. And that C2 security crap that creates
half of NT's overhead is usefull to only a tiny minority of users.
Anyway, thank you grande for this info! I can see I have been ignoring the
rest of the computer industry just to concentrate on 3DS. But then, all else
pales in comparison to 3DS so am I really to blame?

James,
One more thing, the Warp dream 🙂 coming this fall is going to be called
Personal OS/2 Version 3.0. It will have a lot of Workplace (PowerPC) technology
on it. Personally, I think that 3.0 will be the Number 🙂
ana /krazy images
ana /krazy images,
I beg to differ on the latest WarpII beta…Since I am running it now to log
into CIS…anyhow, I guess the new release will appeal to the casual user, a
power user or better a user who uses *NIX will hate it. The GUI is as lame as
windows NT…cheesy is more like it. It seems IBM has not a clue what to do
with it…I would look at the OS2 for PowerPC when and if it ever appears, I
guess from a programmers point (my real background) OS2 is as much a kludge as
Windows…
Jeff
Thanks for that message, Jeff. I don't have the luck of being an OS/2 beta
tester, but from the features I have seen described as _working_ features in
Warp, I would say that OS/2 is a remarkable operating system. With Chicago
delayed to mid-1995, it sounds like a winner. It is interesting to have points
of view others than from the Team OS/2, fans and other IBM people, though.
What is so bad about the new interface? Windows NT like interface? I can't
believe that IBM have dropped the object oriented interface in OS/2. In fact,
it is one of the strongest points: the Workplace. I had the impression (and
still have) that the interface is going to be not only kept that way, but also
expanded towards OpenDoc and the future Human-Centric Workplace to be present
in the Power Personal computers. BTW, What do you think is a good interface?
Chicago? A cross-breed between System 7 and the Workplace? Also, to measure
your comments I would like to know what do you understand as a power user.
Thanks!
Cheers!

ps.Hey, it could be great to see some screen shots of that cheesy interface. If
you can send some JPEGs to my address (set message to: reciever pays) I will be
able to further discuss with you about this topic 🙂 Thanks in advance!
I think Jeff is a pretty die hard UNIX/Xwindows fan, as I am quickly becoming.
X Windows is a wonderful environment!!!!!!!!

I just did. Ah, there's nothing sweeter than software that isn't here yet <g>.
It does sound great, though. I have no doubt that were just rounding into the
time where there will be a change in everybody's OS. No longer DOS X.0 or
System X but a wild west of new choices.
The problem is I work for a company who, years ago, when choosing an operating
system for there new computerized accounting dept., turned down DOS and put
there money on something Alpha Micro. We still use it to this day and it scares
the bejesus out of us to have to rely on something so obsolete.
I guess I just don't have deep enough pockets to be on the bleeding edge. If it
does all that it says, it will be a good candidate to be my OS of the future.
I'll just wait to see how it does for a while first.
Um, what's Targa2000? (excuse my blank look <g>)

In other words, the pioneers are the ones with the arrows in their backs.
— James — MAP — Ouch!! What is this piece of wood stuck in me? 🙂
To be honest, I am tired about the "wait and see" attitude <g> Not that I want
everybody to jump into OS/2. I am concious about my 3DS dependency, like all
people here, so if OS/2 3.0 doesn't do 3DS, I am not going to go OS/2. However,
if you can run your apps and peripherals under a new system with a great
architecture, then you are mad not to switch to it.
IMHO, people are willing to jump from the MS/Intel bandwagon, but they are
going to do it only if there is something better than the thing they already
have.
People should take in count that OS/2 3.0 is the THIRD version of a stable
solid operating system, while Windows NT 3.0 is the FIRST version of a totally
new operating system, and 3.5 is in fact just v1.5. Chicago (now delayed to
mid-1995) is a remake of an old terror cheesy movie with 32bit parts. It is
going to be called Windows 4, but it should be called Chicago 1.0.
So what we should get? ahh, I don't know <g> Seriously, if OS/2 3.0 really do
what it is said, we will buy OS/2 for our Intel machines. For future
machines… well, none of them will have an Intel processor, so who cares? <bg>
ana /krazy images
>> if OS/2 3.0 doesn't do 3DS, I am not going to go OS/2. <<
Agreed. I really like OS/2, but I am striving to be platform indpendent. I do
not really want to be biased against to/fro any platform because animation is
my dream, not computer science. But because I love animation, and because I
prefer the way 3DS works, I will always have some bias for a platform that runs
3DS.
>> if you can run your apps and peripherals under a new system with a great
architecture, then you are mad not to switch to it. <<
I have been saying this for over a year. I think people are about ready to
listen.
>> People should take in count that OS/2 3.0 is the THIRD version of a stable
solid operating system <<
Again, I fully agree. Software maturity is a big issue (at least for me).
>> So what we should get? <<
1) Whatever runs 3DS; 2) Whatever runs 3DS; 3) Whatever runs 3DS the best!
— James — MAP —
That is, whatever runs 3DS 🙂

I'm not saying I don't like the idea of OS/2. The problem is that in addition
to the people telling me of it's wonderfull charms I have others warning me
about how much hard disk space, how much RAM it needs and how it can be
intolerant of machines that aren't perfectly configured. We run all clones, so
that's an issue. It could be fine, they could be wrong, I don't know but that
is why I take these things slowly and find out for myself.
I'm *not* trying to restart an OS Holy War. I'm not running any platform down,
I'm just doing my homework. I can't understand why anyone cares what any one
else chooses to use as their platform/OS/MuffinRecipeDatabase/whatever. I've
been lied to before and I don't take everyones word at face value, no matter
how many exclamation marks they use.
<huff, puff, puff…>

hey, in no way I want to convince you to change to other OS. I only was trying
to show you and whoever read the message the benefits and disadvantages of
switching to a superior OS <g>, that's all. If you buy it or not, that's your
problem.
In the other side, I am willing for people to change to OS/2 and leave windoze
land for just two reasons:
1)More users + more application developers (as you see, I am pretty egoist in
this point :)= another established OS to choose from.
2)Oh, because I want your economical and mental wealth and productivity, fellow
humans (see how good I could be? <g>)
But forget about that. My main point is that I don'tunderstand why people don't
jump to a new platform if that platform really gives them what they need and it
is a superior operating system, whatever the OS/platform is. It is just a
question of the disadvantages of putting a new system to work vs. the benefits
you undoubtely get with it. If in that equation disadvantages outweight
advantages, stay in your current world. If not, make the change. It is also a
matter of how you fast evolve and adapt to new technologies. Personally, I
don't have any fear to experimentation. In fact, experimentation is one of my
personal secrets for life 🙂 (applied to art and technology in same amounts).
As a plus, I enjoy to get trapped for a weekend in a configuration problem or
new software installation and solve it. Is kind of a game for me <g> A game
that gives me an edge over many people and business I know 🙂
I don't want to evangelize on anything. I am not a TV preacher neither John C.
Dvorak <G> People here knows how involved I get with the technologies I
consider worthy. I only try to transmit them my views and enthusiasm, not to
convince anyone of anything.
And beyond that, I like discussions, even byzantine ones. Only throught
communication and information we will be able to reach new heights in personal
development, expand our minds and open our inner senses to new experiences and
intellectual processes. Well, that sounds pretentious. To put it in another
way: just have fun! <g>
ana /krazy images
To be honest, my part in this thread is more of Devil's Advocate than anything
else. I'm genuinely interested in getting OS/2, otherwise I wouldn't ask
questions.
>>But forget about that. My main point is that I don'tunderstand why people
don't jump to a new platform if that platform really gives them what they
need<<
Two reasons:
1) Beta was superior to VHS but a Beta tape machine would do me no good today,
no matter how loyal I was to it. When I go to a store that sells software I'd
prefer to see more direct OS/2 support from the developers. I know it runs DOS
and Windows programs fine now, but that may not always be the case, given
Microsoft's tricky business history when it comes to controling code.
2) Until I have the time to down my machine and play with OS/2, possibly
putting it out of action while I bug hunt, I have to rely on people's opinions.
Forgive me, but I've been lied to before so I usethe opinion of others only as
a base for me to develop my own conclusions. In other words, I don't take any
one's claims at face value. They influence me, but they are weighted.
I'd love to have the time and budget to experiment with everything that strikes
my fancy. Your situation sounds ideal. Where I am now, however, there's always
a shortage of stations and if mine's not busy, I have to work hard to defend it
against those who would waste a brand new P90 on 2d Autocad drawings. Ugh. <g>
And as far as my personal machine goes, I'm just not paid enough to do it <g>.

.
Yes, the Beta story <sigh> Now we are entering in the marketing arena. You are
right, marketing muscle could put a product on the top… but also down in
hell.
But as for OS/2, I have the feeling that it won't happen this time 🙂
