Hey there krazy Ana! Hold the DEL key. I have this problem weekly. What you need to do is to first try to rebuild cabinet indexes. If that crashes then go into file manager and del the one file FCabinet.idx in that directory. Then when you launch wincim the next time it will rebuild that file. Sometimes I have to do a chkdsk /f from dos in the process. But I always get my archived messages back into the folders. I'm not sure its csnav bug as I had the same trouble with wincim and the new multimedia wincim from the CD-rom. I just attribute it all to PC ritual. Computers are tempremental things and not even someone like Gus can get them working with 100% perfection.

Message archived for future reference, Don. Thanks! Unfortunately, it has come tooooo late. Dr.Forrester pushed the button this morning <g> BTW, this is my first problem with both. As for the PC ritual… weeeeeeeelllll <g> ana /krazy images

Sorry I was toooooo late. Who is Dr. Forrester anyway and what business has he performing a filectomy on computers? He should stick to surgery on people. <BG>

Who is Dr.Forrester! Doesn't the exclamation "Dr.Clayton Forrester, I love you!" tell anything to you? <g> Oh, well, he is "just" a MST3K character (I am sure Jamie got that one) ana /krazy images

>>I am sure Jamie got that one Moi? Did you watch last night? It was a re-run (The Brain that wouldn't die) but it seemed like they re-did the jokes. It was hilarious. BTW, do you think SOL is an accidental acronym? (I don't think so.) We got movie sign… J-moi

Last I saw was a rerun of that space movie with Gene Hackman ("he is good!" <g>). You know, the one of the "-How do you copy, over?""-On a Xerox machine" <bg> of the MST3K promotional ad on Comedy Central. I think I saw "The Brain that wouldn't die" a couple of times, though. Is that one with the doctor who has a girlfriend who is killed _by_ the road <g> then he put her head back to life in the lab? (that was the first with Mike as the guy in space, I think) The first scene in the surgery room with the guy and his father is one of the best ever. S(atellite) O(f) L(ove) and accidental acronym? Uhm, I don't know, what do you exactly mean? 🙂 ana /krazy images

Americanism ahead. Have you ever heard anyone say they were "ess oh el"?
#123274From: krazy imagesSep 11, 1994 3:46 PM
Nope. I am wondering if any of you are going to explain this to me <g> ana /krazy images

SOL is an term for (S)hoot, (O)ut of (L)uck – well not exactly 'shoot' but this is a family forum. And seeing as how Joel (then Mike) got stuck in orbit watching bad movies, it would seem they're SOL. BTW- That movie you're talking about was 'Marooned' although they renamed it for some reason. I actually saw that one in the theater! J-me

Actually, I do think it was completely accidental. There's a Lou Reed song about a satellite of love, and I think they took it from that. It's a cute phrase. Now, have you ever eaten a Hamdinger? I used to know the lady in the Hamdinger commercials…

I grew up in the same areas and about the same time as the guys on MST3K, and some of them went to the UW-Madison at one time or another, where I was, too. Jim Mallon, the producer of MST3K, was responsible for a prank-laden student government in the late 70s, known for erecting the top half of the Statue of Liberty on frozen Lake Mendota on campus, as well as covering the central hill of campus with pink flamingos. There's a lot of Wisconsin humor on that show. I think Hamdingers went off the market a long time ago. I think these commercials for Spam-burgers are almost the same thing, except Hamdingers were, well, a bit ham-mier. 🙂 Linda Barry, the cartoonist, spent some of her childhood in Wisconsin, too. Now, have you ever seen "The Red Green Show" on PBS? It's a parody of all those hunting-fishing kind of TV shows.

Mistery Science Theater 3000. You can watch it in Comedy Central everyday at midnight. It will be better for you to check it out, since it is almost impossible to describe what these guys do and how they do it. One thing: once you connect, it is nearly impossible to disengage (hey, I learnt that word by playing Tie Fighter <g>) ana /krazy images

>>Mistery Science Theater 3000. You can watch it in Comedy Central… I don't get Comedy Central… or the Comedy Channel… or E… or the Sci Fi channel… or…. AND I still pay for cable! Boy I hate my cable company, but seeing that they are the only one around, it's that or nothing! Is this the case everywhere? (only a single cable company in any given area, and thus, no competition). I really hate that! OK. Just had to get that out… I feel better now (except I still don't get Comedy Central… or….) 🙁 David
#123336From: Gus GrubbaSep 12, 1994 5:34 AM
>> Is this the case everywhere? Not really. Get a satellite dish. Bypass the middle man all together and get over 300 channels (though a great percentage of junk like all kinds of preachers) including all the channels distributed by cable (the cable company is nothing more than a couple of satellite dishes and a redistribution network). You do have to pay for the premium channels just like cable but you pay the source directly. It costs around $275 a year to get everything you could want. The real great stuff is channel surfing (my preferred sport) and you get to find the weirdest things.
#123498From: David StinnettSep 13, 1994 2:29 AM
I'd never really considered a dish before because I've always thought they were pretty expensive. You mentioned $275 a year. Are those just subscription fees on top of the initial purchase? Do you know if you can lease/rent units for a resonable price, like in the range of $60 – 75 a month (including service subscriptions)? If I can, I'll start looking this weekend, because I'm paying over $50 a month just for cable right now! (they raise the rates every couple of months, it seems)
#123583From: Gus GrubbaSep 13, 1994 2:00 PM
I don't know. I bought my dish 4 years ago and at that time it (the whole system) costed around $2,200. I would think you should be able to get a 10' dish, actuator, feedhorn, LNA, and receiver for around $1,500 nowadays. You can either buy everything yourself and install it or hire a company and buy the setup from them. Check around and let me know what you find. P.S. $275 is what I pay for the programming. That gives all the usual half dozen HBO channels (you get both East and West feeds), Cinemax, and everything else.
#123606From: David StinnettSep 13, 1994 3:57 PM
Well, $1500 is outa my range for now. I'm trying to save up for a move in a few months and I'm about to sink $$ into a new P90 system (which alone is stressing my wallet more than I'd like). I still might check into it, just for fun anyway.
#123711From: SyndesisSep 14, 1994 9:53 AM
Yeah, but "Internet" is to "surfing" as "waiting for the dish to move" is to "channel surfing". 🙂 I know I'd like satellite, but I don't like to wait for the dish to catch up with my trigger finger! Even cable isn't fast enough for me. I have two picture-in-picture cable tuners linked in chain, so I can watch up to three video signals simultaneously. And that's just at the office! Most people don't think about the most useful applications of very large, very high-res screens. I don't want to watch one high-res movie-box, I want three-four resizable channels at once. At the NewTek holiday parties, they set up a great system: a video wall of 36 identical TVs all tuned to cable, one per station. They had one remote with a shotgun-like cardboard tube that could point at a single monitor from the recliner that sat in front of the screens, and another remote that could control them all at once.

Are you kidding me? That message was exactly like the Comedy Central ad on MTV. Now you will tell me: "M-T-V? Uuuh, what's that? Is that like Music Television or something? UhUh uuu, what?" <bg>
#123496From: David StinnettSep 13, 1994 2:28 AM
Music television, huh? haven't heard of that one. Is it something new? <g>
#123505From: krazy imagesSep 13, 1994 3:08 AM
Yeah, you shake the remote and then throw it to the wall and it is like it sounds or something and then you shake it again and you start to hear a rythm inside made by a broken piece maybe and it is like you throw it again against the TV and you get more cool sounds and it is like it is cool or music television or something <g>

Get a sattelite dish. That's your only form of protest to these idiot cable companies. I'm going to get one when I move, because although my cable operator carries a decent variety of channels, the signal quality is really poor, and I've dragged them out on enough service calls to realize they either can't or won't do anything to improve it =-(
#123494From: David StinnettSep 13, 1994 2:26 AM
Depends on the price, but i'm considering it. I'm also planning on moving, hopefully by the start of the year, the tiny place we're in now gets smaller by the day.
#123565From: David J. MarksSep 13, 1994 11:52 AM
>> That's your only form of protest to these idiot cable companies. But then you'll need to contend with General Instrument's encryption nonsense. Take a look at Wired, August '94 for a really good look at satellite video piracy. I'd like to see broadcasters lower their subscription rates for satellite dish owners and more (that's ANY) competition for cable companies. I think a number of cities are offering cable broadcast via airwaves to be picked up by set-top dishes. This is the kind of service that will undermine the cable monopoly.

>> … the signal quality is really poor, and I've dragged >> them out on enough service calls to realize they either >> can't or won't do anything to improve it =-( I will make a prediction that your cable signal quality will improve in the relatively near term, say 2 to 4 years approx. Why do I make so bold? It is the "information highway" thing. The old electrical type cable cannot deliver the services that the cable system MUST deliver and that includes two way communications of several types. It also includes many more channels (500 is often mentioned). My area is served by a company that will put in optical on the street but the hookup will remain electrical for a while. But not to me since I don't have cable.
#123687From: John TissavarySep 14, 1994 3:58 AM
Actually, the problem isn't in the main feed, it's in the feed from the street into my apartment. They've got the friggin cable wrapped around the house like 10 times or something, and these bozo's are wondering why the signal doesn't look good! I've told them they need to re-do the wiring, but they just keep scratching their heads and telling me the "supervisor" will call in a day or so. What a bunch of lame idiots – I guess MacDonalds wouldn't hire them so they went to work for Viacom.
#123712From: SyndesisSep 14, 1994 9:53 AM
You could always perform a little illegal monkey-wrenching by flexing the cable in various spots until the internal copper breaks, and then instead of finding the break, they'll simply re-wire your apartment the right way.
#123758From: albert waltnerSep 14, 1994 1:50 PM
>> … and these bozo's are wondering why … Ok, my cable was very good when I had it for a while. But I can relate to the bozo part since it sounds just like a number of "supervisors" that I could not work for or satisfy.

hey, i used to work for viacom, and most of those people would probably be able to get a job at McDonalds m.

Two words: sat dish.<g>
#123607From: David StinnettSep 13, 1994 3:58 PM
Two more words… too expensive! I'll check into prices, but it will probably cost more than I can afford, and the LAST thing I need is to put anything else on credit.
#123667From: Michael WendellSep 13, 1994 11:28 PM
Save your money for now, cable is going to get a lot more competitive in the next few years. Direct broadcast satellite is almost ready, and the telco's will be cable ready soon enough. Competition will cause prices to drop before you can make up for the cost of your dish. (I hope <g>)
#123690From: Accu-WeatherSep 14, 1994 6:41 AM
Two(3?) last words: you're right.<g> I don't have one.

I guess I'll have to imagine it. No Comedy Central here. Have you heard about the new Lucas Arts game coming out? It's called Dark Forces, and it's a Doom like Star Wars game. It looks really hot! You shoot Storm Troopers, steal plans for the Death Star, and a bunch of other stuff. It adds more story/puzzle than Doom, and lets you jump, look up and down, etc. Doom 2 will be pretty pale in comparison. I gotta have it. (I really need to apply to LA.) Who was it that did the Stormtrooper animations for Rebel Assault? Alan I.? I forget. JNJ (did anyone of you do the modeling for Dark Forces? if so- please let me know!)
#123501From: krazy imagesSep 13, 1994 2:32 AM
Yes, I have read and ordered it 🙂 Martin Foster participated in Rebel Assault, but I can't remember what he exactly did. Maybe Alan could refresh our -fragil, magnetic- memories
#123543From: ALAN IGLESIASSep 13, 1994 10:12 AM
I believe Steve Sherer was responsible for the storm-troopers in RA, John. We could ask MartinF when he comes back, as he did some work with Steve on the project. I haven't spoken to Steve since Christmas time, when he was talking about ramping up to produce a game of his own design.
#123615From: John N. JordanSep 13, 1994 5:07 PM
Alan- is Steve Sherer in Lucas Arts? I'd like to know what kind of people they are looking for, as far as artists. When's Martin getting back? Thanks. (you too Ana!) JNJ
#123626From: ALAN IGLESIASSep 13, 1994 6:04 PM
No, John, Steve (as far as I know) does not work for LucasArts. I believe he contracted out to them during the development of RA. Like I said, I believe he is working on his own projects these days. Martin should be back on the 19th. -Alan
