Yep,
if you mainly print text, you'll be better of setting the driver to Epson
emulation. Well, I don't think users can complain about this behaviour as other
printers only offer one similar emulation.
But as said, most applications are now able to print text in the printers
graphic mode. In this case, you are far better off with Extended Emulation.
Final Writer, Final Copy, Wordworth…. they all mainly rely on printing their
text in graphic mode and that's what makes the Extended Emulation so nice to
use.
It begins to look as though this printer was a poor choice for the Amiga,
doesn't it? If I can only use Epson emulation – which does not take full
advantage of the printer's capabilities – in order to use text, and since text
and graphics cannot be mixed with it (if I understand the documentation with
the drivers and the things you've said here), then it is of little more use
than a dot matrix would have been – or one of the very inexpensive bubble-jets.
I'd certainly not planned to move it to the laptop and put the laser on the
Amiga, but that begins to appear as the only solution.
Thanks for all the information. I appreciate your work with these drivers, and
your input here. It really helps us to know what the printers can and cannot
do with the Amiga. And without your work, we would not have Canon drivers at
all – so thanks!

but I still think you understood something wrong. I don't know any major
application on the Amiga doing what you want. If applications print text and
gfx on the same page, they use the printers gfx mode for everything including
text. So, here you don't have any problems. The only thing you have to do is,
set the printer to text mode when printing text only with an application that
does use the printers text mode. Again, here you don't have any drawback…
And of course you can print text and graphics on the same page using Epson
emulation. However, here you have to use the printer panel to define the print
modes. Something you can do in Extended Emulation by software. There are mainly
two drawbacks when printing graphics in Epson emulation: Speed and in some
cases minor increase in stripes (depends on print mode, paper….).
Maybe you should describe exactly what you are doing and what you don't like
about doing it that way with the Canon printer.
