Ben the JPEG converter was downloaded here on CIS. Its a file name
AUGJPE.lzh in AMIGAARTS library. Could you try it with that…. I'm sure
we will be seeing more easy interfaced JPEG converters but for now this is
the first I ever used for AMIGA. Another question->can HAM-E image be
converted JPEG in a future.<- Is it technically possible? If its possible,
it will be way to cool. BTW I'm using IP 5.1.
->Henry, thanks for info. I haven't tried using the convert<-Gees I haven't
used in while since IP5.1 reads alot anyway…, but anyway it should work
tooo.
THANX Both of you.

I'll get the file (Guess you know how much I look over there, now. :^)
HAM-E images can certainly be converted into a JPEG format of any
compression density – likely you'll go HAME->IFF24->JPEG for now, though.
As I understand it, the new ADPro will have JPEG in it, and it will also
load and save HAME and REG mode images. That will do it, right there.
Since ADPro is (apparently) about to encroach upon our approach to image
processing (WYSIWYG mouse regions and so on) we may (if this is true, it's
just a rumor so far) go ahead and put out JPEG system in too. Have to wait
till we know, though.
But there is no _technical_ problem. We've had JPEG on the Amiga for some
time, longer than anyone else in fact.

Ben, take an academic question about JPEG? About five years ago, Mitre
Corp PhD's, looking at digital radiology, decided that *any* data
compression greater than about 20-to-1 was necessarily destructive with no
recovery possible.
Has JPEG found a way around this? Or is the "intolerable loss" tolerable in
non-scientific applications? Rob.
JPEG has absolutely NOT found a way around it (destructiveness). JPEG is a
lossy method, and the "harder" you apply it, the worse the loss gets.
I'm not sure that the general conclusion, compression greater than 20:1 is
destructive, is supportable. I can give you an isolated instance that
disproves the rule right now.
Image is 100×100, for a total of 10,000 pixels. The image under test
contains all black. The compression scheme, in std run-length approach,
says "make 10,000 black pixels", which takes about 4 bytes to represent.
The compressed image is 4 bytes, the real image is 10,000, decompression is
100% accurate, compression ratio is 2500:1.
IFF can even do well in that type of case, or where an image has little in
it and a solid, non noisy background.
I remain convinced that higher order general compression techniques are
possible. I don't have the answer, but I think it will be found.

Thanks; suspicions confirmed. You're right, though, there _is_ a way; just
have to find it. Rob
Ben,
I believe I remember ASDG stating that they were working on WYSIWIG
approach soon after ADPro was released. A logical progression.
I do, however, hope your software does well for you; you've obviously
put quite a bit of work in it. It's nice to see JPEG support for the Amiga.

He may well have. He just didn't tell us. In fact, he told us the opposite.
If it is indeed so, then the two products will simply be in straight
competition. No big deal: Imagemaster can more than hold it's own. There
are areas we stayed out of, intentionally, so that AdPro would still be a
viable product. Perry knows this – It's been discussed repeatedly. If he
wants to try and put features we've had for a long time into AdPro, then
bless him. ;^) We know they're good.
–Ben
Thank you Ben. I'll be sure and let everyone at ASDG know that they have
you to owe for their continued salaries. “Still be a viable product…''
Indeed.
Don't sweat it, Perry. We'll keep letting y'all eat. :^)
–Ben
See Perry's message to me; they are not going into the same areas that
Imagemaster does. Things remain "cool".

Rumors about some things being WYSIWYG are true (in the next release) but
not the way you seem to think. Things which really cried out for some
semblence of WYSIWYG (like sweeping out a rectangular area to crop) have
been added. Operations all process full images, not sub-areas as in your
software. Four “visual'' operators have been added…Cropping, Drawing
Rectangles, Tiling, and Text. All but the last were present in the current
release of ADPro with purely numeric interfaces. Hardly a bold foray into
WY{SIWYG painting.

That's more like what *I* thought you were telling me. Good. We'll meander
on in the way we have, then: I rather like the co-existance we've worked
out.
–Ben
Hooray! And I thought only Apple and IBM could have such a relationship.
