#High Quality clip-arts
29 messages in this thread
I am currently working on a collection of very high quality structured
clip-arts on the Amiga. Is anybody interested ?
They are better than the average Mac or PC collection costing 150$+.

I am.
How would you like to have a flashy red Lamborghini ? The file have been
made on Professional Draw and is about 120 K large. It is a big file, very
sophisticated.
This particular car is making Mac and PC users jealous…

120K? How about 340HP? I'd prefer that. 🙂
Jean-Eric:
Yes, I am interested. What makes your collection better? And of
course what is the PRICE?

The quality of the clip-arts is very high. To give you an example, the
Lamborghini printed on paper looks like a photograph. You can even read
the logo between the taillights. You can see the car's reflection in the
rear-view mirror. You can see the car's reflection in the chrome
tail-pipe, etc…
My baseball player, on screen looks like live TV. The quality is what is
different. The detail is extraordinary. Compared to what is currently
available on the Amiga, it is like comparing a Yugo to a Lamborghini.
I will try to download a sample here in a few days. I have to get a Com
software for my Amiga. This message was written on a Macintosh.
Here is a list of those clip-arts :
– Lamborghini Diablo (100 K)
– Ford Taurus (40 K)
– Biycle rider
– Baseball player (60 K)
– Business man (20 K)
– Video camera ( 130 K )
– Woman
– And many others on the way.

Your description sounds Grrrreat! I am looking forward to down-loading
your samples.

I'm always intruiged by clipart … I do a _lot_ of DTP, and rarely find
any need for it. I think the only time I've needed it was when someone
asked me for a new company logo, and they wanted a black cat in silhouette.
In the end, I found a cat amongst Bob Rakowski's fonts, printed real big
and used that.
It's not meant to be a put-down in any way, but I'm really interested to
know what people _do_ with clipart (especially such excellent
quality/detail as these items seem to be).

PS … just remembered that I did once typeset a 250 page medical text book
using ProPage, and actually needed a clip of a stethoscope (but never found
one) … mmm …. maybe there are uses after all 🙂
Well, any good document is always more exciting with some visual element.
It depends what your needs are. But in the collection I was working on, It
was designed especially for the Amiga. A big part of it was concentrated
on Video subjects with Video cameras, VCR's and the other stuff like that.
The Lamborghini is a kind of teaser to the collection.
I have been studying in visual graphics and text over the past years (5
years on the Amiga) and 3 years in DTP. A text only document, especially
if very long like a Newsletter or a brochure can be very depressing. An 8
pages business report with text only may seems daunting. But place your
text in Garamond 10 for example with generous leading, in 3 columns, put
some illustrations related to the document, some white space and you can
make your document fit in 4 pages, looks fresher, more professional and
more effective to get your message across.
On the Amiga so far, the only good clip-arts I have found are Mac or PC
ports. This is why I decided to change that. I have to skills to do it,
but studies I have made show me that the Amiga base is not large enough a
market to cover my costs to finish the product. I hope you show me wrong.
I am attempting to download a few samples in the next days so you can judge
for yourself.
I have shown the Lambo to some people who have Amigas and they Ask :
"Illustrator? Corel Draw?" I say no, PDRAW ! Then, they get very impressed.
Most PDRAW users I have met tell me "PDRAW Sucks!". I agree completelly.
But it is the only software of the kind that is stable enough to work with.
It has its quirks, and Gold Disk is deaf to my (and many other) complaints.
Aldus cares so much about its users that it has a dedicated service called
"User support".
PPage the best DTP package on any platform ? Since when ? Have you ever
worked with Quark Xpress ?

I certainly agree about illustrations making a document more visually
appealling … it's just that I've never like what I would call `gratuitous
illustrations' which is the commonest use that I've seen for lots of
clipart.
Illustrations really should be relevant to the text, and so bespoke clipart
would seem to be rather more preferable (especially as publicly distributed
clipart tends to appear in all sorts of places, and gets to look very
stylised)
I'm not knocking it though … there are many who find it very useful, it's
just that I don't.
You sure are right. Some people would use about any image they can find
"enhance" the appearance of their documents. I saw many people for
example using WordPerfect with its standard 20 clip-arts, using the same
Balloons illustration from memos, newsletters, business reports, happy
birthday cards, etc… When you only have 20 illustrations to choose one,
you at least expect them to be good ones. But the ones provided with
wordperfect were rather simplistic.
In your newsletter for example, you needed a stethoscope. This is a very
specific need, It depends what you want to do with it. If you really need
a stethoscope, because for example, your newsletter is called Stethoscope,
you should not use anything else. But if you need a picture because you
want to enhance a newsletter for doctors, you could use a substitute, like
a bunch of doctors around an operation table, or something like that.
Perhaps a medical logo (the snake around the pole, or whatever they call
it).
It also depends on the quality of the clip-arts you have. If you only have
"so-so" pictures, those can actually render your publication "ugly". But
take a look at the clip-arts I just uploaded in the DTP/Word processing
section. The Lambor.lsa and the Basebal.lsa, and tell me you would'nt use
them in every of your documents (car related or not)… If I get to
complete my collection, I will try to make a stethoscope just for you by
the way, if it can still help you. I would like to hear about what people
like you need. It is very hard to find what to make a clip-art about. I
would like to have any ideas you may have…

No, the stethoscope was needed for a medical text book which has long since
gone to the printers! The client wanted every chapter number to be
`wrapped' in a stethoscope for which a bit of manipulable clip-art would
have done just fine … in the end, I persuaded the client that it was a
bit corny and not really suited to a book which was as serious as it was.
Next time you need some special clip-art, send me a message, you never know
what I may be able to do for you. The idea to place page numbers inside a
stethoscope is a good idea, if well executed of course…
Bonjour Jean-Eric,
I would be very interested in your clip art, if it is in a format that
I can use, i.e. for Professional Page, which requires the ProDraw format.
What program will you be using to create these clips?
OOOOOOPS!!
I just read a few more replies and see that they ARE ProDraw clips. In
that case, you can count me in as being very interested

Those clip-arts are on my Amiga of course. Unfortunatelly, right now, my
modem is connected to my Macintosh. I have no Com software on the Amiga
yet. As soon as I get one, I will download you a sample.
Prepare to make your Mac and PC friends jealous…

I think I have some com info I received with one of my old issues of Amigo
Times. I'll need some help on this one though. How can I connect my
Macintosh Modem to my Amiga ? I don't want to blow what is left of my 500.
Any suggestion ?
Jean-Eric Henault, on my Macintosh.
Montreal
Jean-Eric:
What kind of modem is it? If it's Mac specific, you'll need some sort of
cable to hook it up to your A500. If it's non-machine specific (RS-232),
you can use the same cables that are used by MS-DOS clones w/DB-25 serial
ports.

It is a GVC Super Modem 2400. The place where I bought it told me it was a
PC modem. I just needed a different set of cables to connect it to the
Mac.
The modem is currently connected to the Apple Talk port in the Mac, but the
Out on the modem itself is a serial port. So I believe I only need a
serial port cable.
I just moved my Amiga out of the closet, and it is installed next to the
Mac. I hope they don't fight each other. What worse, they could mate, and
then, could you imagine the results in 9 months ?
An AmiMac ?
The A500 is just waiting for the cable. The stores are closed for now, but
Monday I will go look for it, promise.
By the way, I rediscovered some old games on the ami such as Populous.
They don't have it on Mac yet.
Til then,
Jean-Eric Henault
I don't know if there are Radio Shacks in Montreal, but it is a simple
cable to purchase. Any standard cable will work that has the DB25
connectors on it. Of course you need the terminal program and I'd recommend
trying to get Backtalk from the communciations library here in AmigaUser.
Jean-Eric, I'm still trying to imagine someone typing at 150wpm. I need to
see that to believe it!
chris
Chris, this is Montreal, not Africa ! Of course we have Radio Shacks ! We
have at least two dozens of them ! Geez !
Thanks for the advice . But before I can download any com software from any
library, I will need a com package to do it in the first place. I have a
small one, very basic, but it should do the trick.
I believe the actual world typing speed record is about 175 WPM. I only
type at 130 WPM, and not every days.
Hope to hear from you soon !

Jean-Eric,
Very touchy aren't we B^).
Since you have a mac and modem, download the files with it. Format a disk
on the mac as a 720K MSdos file using Apple File Exchange. Also you need to
go in the Archiver library and get LHA138.run a self-extracting file. It
contains LHA and its manual. You need this to extract the term program from
its archive. If you don't have the means to read MSdos files on the Amiga,
you need crossdos or Multidos (its shareware), Crossdos is commercial.
These allow the Amiga to read/write IBM formatted disks. If all else fails
someone up in Montreal can help you get a term program to use. Ask in the
forums here for a local Amiga Forum member.
Then copy the files from the mac to the IBM formatted disk and transfer
them to the Amiga disk using either of the two mentioned software pkgs. I
mentioned above.
chris
Thanks for the advice Chris.
Jean-Eric:
If it's a PC modem as you say, finding a cable should be easy. Good luck
in your quest.
As for an AmiMac… I already have one (A2000 w/A-Max)! However, the Mac
genes must be recessive since I almost never see (use) the Mac. 🙂

I wonder if it would be possible to funnel the Amiga file through the Mac.
Any ideas ? Might be faster. The file is on an Amiga floppy.
Waiting reply!
Jean-Eric Henault
Jean-Eric — one way to transfer files from Amiga to Mac and back is via
MS-DOS. There are several programs which will format a disk to 720K MS-DOS
format on the Amiga (CrossDOS, Dos2Dos [both comercial] and MultiDOS
[either shareware or PD, can't remember since I have Dos2Dos], and then
transfer an Amiga file to that disk.
Newer MACs have the capability to then read the MS-DOS disk.

Jean-Eric,
I would be interested in seeing your clip-art. Why not upload a
sample.

Jean-Eric,
You bet! I have ProClips, Eclips 1&2 and the Gold Disk stuff. More is
always welcome
