PPI & Supra connections
9 messages in this thread
Here is a good one for you. A friend of mine just recently purchased a PPI
14400 Baud modem, and I have the Supra 14400 FaxModem. We have tried
several times to connect with one another but without success. Now the
carrier is detected at both ends, I get a 14400 CARRIER but no connect
message. Also both of our modems tell us that we are not using Data
Compression or error correction, which we should be. Now I can call every
high speed BBS in town and connect with no problems, and so can he.
Whenever we connect up with a BBS we get 14400 with compression & error
correction, but for some reason we just can't get hooked up to each other.
Another strange thing is that there is a IBM user that has the PPI modem
that connects to my BBS and he doesn't have any problems. My friend and I
have different Amiga's, I'm using a 3000 with 12megs and he has a 1000
with 8 megs. But what it seems to boil down to is that although we can get
a 14400 carrier at each end, for some reason the modems don't want to use
data compression or error correction between each other. Does anyone have
any ideas on what might be wrong? HELP!!!!!

John,
Try setting N0 S39=9 S110=0 in your Supra. That *should* do the
trick. Also, you might try setting %E1 %G0 &Q9. That helped here, with
my SupraFAX.

Well, we were finally able to connect but don't ask me how. He claims that
he didn't do anything at his end differently, and I know I didn't change
anything here, but now it connects with compression & correction. The only
problem now is that I can only connect with him at 9600 baud. Another
person with a Supra called him and had the same result, using the same
settings that we use to call other BBS's at 14.4K. So now all we have to
do is figure out how to speed things up a little.

John,
The settings I gave you (N0, S37=9, S110=0) will force a v.32
connection. (N0 says use the value of S37, S37=9 says force DCE speed to
9600, S110=0 says disable v.32bis.) Sometimes that's what you need to
use. (I don't know if the new ROMs help; I still have the 1.200c version
of the ROMs.) It may be that your friend is on a noisy line. There's a
couple of BBSs local to me that I like to call. One has a Supra, the
other a PPI. I used to get *massive* retrains with both. With the speed
locked down, I connect to the PPI with no trouble. I still have problems
with the Supra; that BBS is on a very noisy line. (Oddly, with the
settings I gave you, I get a 9600/v.32 connection to the PPI modem,
usually with v.42bis working, which is correct. With the Supra modems, I
get a 12,000bps connection (which has to be v.32bis!), and no error
correction or compression. Strangeness.)

John,
I really don't have any idea what your problem could be. My (tiny)
company connects our two offices via modem – we have a Supra 14.4 in one
office and a PPI 14.4 in the other, and we have no problems connecting
with each other. We're using "standard" default configurations, and have
always connected V.32bis/V.42bis without problem.
Good luck….

Bob:
Could part of the problem John is having be that his friend is pushing the
A1000 serial pretty hard (unacelerated 68000)?
Michael,
I doubt that is the problem – the symptoms don't indicate that he is
getting far enough for the speed of the 1000 to be a factor. That would
only happen after the connection is made, with the symptoms being missed
characters on the receiving end on the A1000. In this case, the modems are
not connecting, which to me indicates something mis-set on one (or both) of
the modem parameter sets.

Just out of curiosity Bob, are both of your computers accelerated enough
to handle the high speed connects?
John – K7KB (Flying via AutoPilot)
John,
Yes – our systems can keep up with the high speed modems. I'm
generally using my Amiga A2500/30, and occasionally my 486/33 Klone. The
other end is running a Klone (either a 486/33 or a 386/20). The systems
don't have a problem keeping up (although the slower Klone is huffing and
puffing when we're through :-).
