Help! I need some advice – I need to take some high quality photographic
slides and composite them and add text to them – then output them to slides
again. A friend suggested making 4×6 prints of the slides, then scanning
them in at 300dpi- at a Mac service bureau since I don't have access to the
scanner then converting them to amiga files – then using the toaster to add
text saving as RGB, compositing in Adpro or DCTVPaint, resaving as 24bit,
then converting back to a format(Mac?), to create slides. Is this the best
way? What kind of quality can I expect? Any help would be GRATEFULLY

I `digitised' a bunch of my slides by simply hlding each one in front
of (against) the lense shroud of my 8mm video camera. Worked great but I
suppose you could do better with that Polaroid set-up. I'm not sure how
that works though, since I don't have one:-). My way is fast and cheap.

You might look into getting the Negatives transferred to a Photo CD if you
own a CD ROM player.tho Check out all yer options

Why don't you call Hammond Photographic Services? (PH:310-390-3010 —
11280 Washington Place, Culver City, California 90230) They are
specialized in Amiga graphics, so you don't have to make the Mac
transition. Maybe they can help you if you send them your slides.
The best way I've had when I've had to digitize slides is to project them
(with a slide projector, which I assume you don't have) and videotape the
projection. That gives very good results.

Jorge, Thanks – I do have a slide projector, and I did shoot it with my
camera It looks so-so. I'm projecting on the wall, where it looks quite
good. I doubt this is a problem for the camera. How far do you put the
camerea etc. Thanks for your input mike

I had someone recommend using Digiview to grab from a projected slide, or a
slide viewer. Since it is a camera grabbing the image, the resolution can
be adjusted (with the zoom) to exactly match your needs… haven't tried
it.

I have tried it, using DigiView and the Panasonic B & W camera. I
purchased a small (5" by 6") portable light box for a few bucks and can
focus right on the slide (using the mechanical focus screw, once can get
the lens to focus very close). The occasional underexposed slide would
come out dark, and I've managed to get good images by projecting the slide
onto a screen and placing the video camera just above and behind the
projector.
Works quite well, and costs a lot less than $15,000!!
I think scanning from printswill give you the best quality for
trans output. Video res images wont give you very good quality
transperencies because of the low resolution.
You should be able to have the slides scanned directly (no
prints) by a service bureau to about 1200×1000 res, then add
text with adpro ( or pro page for highest quality text) then
back out to trans.
Being able to tranfer files to a from the amiga will turn out
to be the toughest part. The cost of the scanns alone could
easily pay for a small scanner (jx 100 at $300).
Making continuous tone photographic quality transparencies is
one of the most demanding applicatios for any computer. The
higher the res of the input will vastly improve the quality
of the output. Good luck.

Unless you already own a lot of high end equipment, it will be alot
easier, and a lot less expensive to have a photolab do the compositing of
the images. (It might be different if the original images were computer
generated)
Use an Amiga titling program or even something like ProPage or PageStream
to create your text and output that to a postscript file (or color seps)
and have a service bureau output the titles to film negatives. Then you
could have the service bureau composite, via film, the slides and the
titles.
Hope this helps. I don't know if all the steps above are outlined
properly, but that's how I'd approach it, avoiding as many 'conversions'
as possible, and trying to maintain the high quality of the original
images.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned the 24-bit SLIDE scanners available for
the Mac. Does anyone know if they're compatible with Amiga?
They're advertised in MacWeek by scitex (Southborough, MA), called the
LEAFSCAN 45, only $15,000. It has a SCSI or GPIB interface.
I don't know the compatibility issues, but mention it since no one else
has. Find a friend who owns one!
The only slide scanner/film recorder s/w of which I am aware is from ASDG
and it supports the Polaroid Pallete. I believe that ASDG has s/w to
support other recorders as well, but you'd have to check with them.
Dunno about the ones for the MAC but ya should be able to use the Fotovix
units for scanning pics,Slides and negatives into the Amiga MIDGARD
GRAPHICS
Peter, what's a Fotovix? I'm the one who started this thread, and still
haven't decided which way to go with my project. Thanks in advance.

I was the one who told you how I digitised my slides with my video
camera. I might have neglected to mention that the camera has a macro mode
which made this possible.
What was this project for? Did you plan on making hard-copies of the
slides or would they just be shown on a TV?

Fotovix is a Gizmo with a CCD Camera and light and has Video Outputs Main
use is for transferring Slides,Negatives and prints to Video it's about
$900 tho if I'm not mistaken MIDGARD GRAPHICS
(From a Fotovix owner) Since the Fotovix is really just a color video
camera on a stand it works "fine" with any computer PROVIDED you can live
with video resolution. Slide output can generally handle much higher
resolution. Also, focusing the Fotovix turns out to be tricky – Net is its
OK for slide to video but I wouldn't use it for slide to slide
