Hi Suresh, I noticed in your excitement that something was missing <bg>. Product Name Company Address City, State Zip Phone Number (Voice) Phone Number (FAX) I must say that this is a nifty trick geared toward sequencial files names, written sequencial to disk or the access time would be horrendous. Please someone tell me it's not. This would solve my system tape backup problem, removable storage service bureau support and gain a 5Gig disk (what a concept!) all for about $2,000 to $2,500? Am I getting this right? Bryce Whiteside CF/X Image, Inc. at the big red stick animation outpost down south.

OK y'all the product is called : "TapeDisk" The company and Phone number are : TapeDisk Corporation – 414-231-3333 Let 'em know I sent you – it won't do YOU any good, but I bet the developers that if I posted a message on CI$, loadsa other 3D loonies would be interested. To answer your questions : I have my Exabyte configured as drive Q: (it also supports a bunch of other tape drives)…and it's formatted as a 4.9Gig Dos Drive. I have just grabbed 600 frames (with TGRAB) and specified Q:\TGA as the destination for the framestores. I jumped into windows and fired up a Batch processor I wrote for PStyler and PhotoShop. 20 Hours later, each frame has been processed by a DIFFUSE GLOW, and resaved out to Q:\NEWTGA. I then wrote each frame back to tape. As far as DOS is concerned my Exabyte is a genuine drive. The only downside is seek-time. Its kinda like a s-l-o-w CD-WORM!…at worst on my drive it takes up to 1minute to get to the file (normally 15 secs..but when the drive is 2Mg full, the time starts to get bigger). Once it gets there, it reads and writes and high speed. Since I'm not inclined to sit and watch 600 frames get processed, this seek time is irrelevant. A 5Gig drive (and removable backup media) is worth it a tiny bit of hassle IMHO. Anyhow..check it out. Maybe there's another user out there who can throw in his/her two cents.

Could you tell me more about your batch processor for PhotoStyler/Photoshop? Sounds like it would be a _real_ useful thing to me, but I never figured out how to make these progs listen to outside messages.

PMJI, but if you are interested in neat effects to be generated onto a sequence of grabed frames .. you should look into Picture Publisher as well. Real cool effects.

Buy ANOTHER paint program? Eeek! I must have dozens already. Ian.
#63249From: Suresh KavanOct 25, 1993 11:18 AM
Having spent loadsa dollars on both PhotoStyler and PhotoShop (and Gallery Effects add-ins)..I found a desperate need to be able to batch process effects. For example, taking a sequence (300+ frames) of a man running and turning it into a charcoal sketch of a man running….. So, out came Visual Basic..and off I went into hibernation. I now have a batch program, that asks me for an input file spec – i.e MANR, the start and end frame number (i.e 5 to 500), an effect – i.e chalk and charcoal, a settings level, a destination and a application (PStyler or PShop) It then fires up say, Photoshop, loads in MANR0005 processes it, writes it out, closes it and moves on to MANR0006 etc etc… I'm toying withthe idea of making it a little prettier and less specific (it's hard coded to my machines settings..) and then offering it as shareware. Lemme know if yer interested in participating in any way. SK.
#63268From: MARTIN G FOSTEROct 25, 1993 12:14 PM
Suresh, I'd be interested in such a "batch-processing" routine as shareware. I have gallery effects I & II and photostyler.
#63309From: John TissavaryOct 25, 1993 5:38 PM
I'd definitely be interested in something like that. I'd even register it <g>! John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
#63351From: Suresh KavanOct 25, 1993 9:04 PM
Oh yeah, also what apps and effects d'ya want…at the moment I can s'port PhotoStyler and Photoshop, and it processes only selected Gallery Effects… Tell me the ones that are most important to you. Thanks.
#63397From: John TissavaryOct 26, 1993 2:09 AM
Actually, one of the reasons I've never bought Gallery Effects is that I couldn't use them for animations, and really don't do much still work. So you tell me what you support, and I'll tell you what sounds like something I could use. I've got Photostyler and Fractal Painter, but will move from Photostyler to Photoshop some time next year. Regards, John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
#63449From: krazy imagesOct 26, 1993 11:24 AM
You will do a bad move then. I have PhotoShop and PhotoStyler, and now use more PShop, but the PhotoStyler upgrade will move Photoshop out of my hardisk for sure 🙂 BTW, have you got Painter X2? I have no words for what you can do with this program <g> I see Photostyler2.0+X2 as the Supreme Combo <g>, specially when it comes to color control. Can't wait for the animation studio from Fractal. You know, it will be like these guys from Fractal have take the our (aap users) wishlist for Animator Pro and add it 3d painting. Then 3dsr3+PS2+X3 will be The Absolute Supreme Solution <G>

Ana, Let me echo Martin Foster's querry: >>>I just received an offer to upgrade Photostyler 1.1a to 2.0. Do you have 2.0? Is it worth it. Sounds good on paper and I like Photostyler 1.1a<<< If I understand your message than the Photostyler 2.0 + Fractal X2 combo will be a great graphic tool. The Fractal X2 package does not require Fractal Painter but can be used as a plug-in to Photostyler. Do I have this right? Now with a program that Greg Pyros has we could render with a video post call to this great graphic combo which would then turn each rendered .tga/.tif into watercolor, pencil, charcoal or pastel frames for a complete animation with a totally different feel than 3ds usually produces.[I hope Greg jumps in here because I'm not sure how his IPAS library works – maybe there is no need for anything but his IPAS] The same effect could be accomplished with Suresh Kavan's batch file method which would take the series of .TGA/.TIF after rendering and process them with the Photostyler 2.0 + Fractal X combo. Please set me straight if I've this all wrong.
#63649From: Oct 27, 1993 1:43 AM
Bob: >> [I hope Greg jumps in here because I'm not sure how his IPAS library >> works – maybe there is no need for anything but his IPAS] Correct – our IPAS routines are all stand-alone programs within 3D Studio (did that make sense? <g>). You don't need Photostyler, Gallery Effects, or twice the disk space to get them to work. And they are all completed in one pass in 3DS!
#63693From: David RhotenOct 27, 1993 10:02 AM
WRONG! (My McLaughlin impression) Painter X2 (Extensions 2) _does_ require Painter to use! NO, it can not be used as a plug-in to PhotoStyler. It is an integral enhancement to the Painter software. As far as the ability to script, there is a kind of ability now, and it will be enhanced in the future. Mark Zimmer (Mr. Painter) hangs over in the COMART Painter section, and you can also find info in the FRACTAL forum.
#63840From: ROBERT RITGEROct 27, 1993 11:50 PM
I took Ana's formula literally when she stated "I see Photostyler 2.0+X2 as the Supreme Combo". She left out Painter so I was hoping that I could pocket the $500 I would have to spend. Do you know if Kai's Power Tools do any of the special effects that X2 offers? Do you have any experience with Kai's Power Tools plugged into Photostyler?
#63822From: krazy imagesOct 27, 1993 10:19 PM
Yes, you are wrong Robert. I think that you have let fly your imagination a bit or probably I'm not too accurate in my descriptions. Yes, I said that the Photostyler 2.0 + Painter x2 will be a killer combo, but the only way you will get them linked is throught plain graphic files 🙁 You will need Painter 2.0 to run Painter X2. Althought the executable and other things are new (like an added masking brush -which is g-r-e-a-t), color sets, color annotation, new cartoon fill, etc…) X2 is based on Painter. Therefore, althought it's called an "eXtension", it's a complete program that upgrades the old one. You will still be able to run Painter 2.0, but with X2, who wants 2.0? 🙂 I said that Photostyler 2.0 and Painter X2 "team" will be (at least for me) the definitive graphic tool because both programs cover all the fields (except animation) that we are working on. X2 is incomparable to anything in the market. It's really a master piece of software. I haven't try styler yet, but from the reviews in the Aldus forum, it will come with all we need in the photography and _printing_ arena and more, completely surpassing Photoshop (which we also have -now to wait Adobe response :). We recently have move to a complete Kodak solution, and Photostyler 2.0 Kodak Color Precision System is the last piece of the puzzle. So things are starting to get really easy for us, and more perfect than ever.
#63659From: John TissavaryOct 27, 1993 2:46 AM
I've got Fractal Painter 2.0. It's the second most used software right behind 3DS (with WINCIM bucking for third place!), and I think it's brilliant. I can't wait for the next release. I don't know if it's the same as X2, or if not, what is X2? I haven't been following Aldus lately, but if you say the new Photostyler release will be better than Photoshop, then that's what I'll be looking for.
#63806From: Jeff HesterOct 27, 1993 8:23 PM
X2 is an extension to Painter that supposedly allows you to treat images as floating "objects" (ala Altamira Composer). Composite you bitmaps, rearrange to your hearts content, blah blah blah… I say supposedly because I haven't had a chance to work with it…yet. Anyone had any experience with it?
#63950From: krazy imagesOct 28, 1993 12:33 PM
No, X2 is not the same than Painter 2.0. You will find the following new features in the extensions (which are now a main part of my life 🙂 -message from Mark Zimmer summarizing the new features- X2: Multiple floating selections within an image. List for identifying group structure for floating selections, with front-to-back ordering. Named objects within the list. Each floating item in the list has its own transparency setting as well as edge feather setting (for soft shadows and the like). Mask Painting has been added, so you can interactively adjust the visibility of floating items. Any Painter action can be done to a floating item individually (Painting, Effects, etc.). User-definable Color Sets are implemented in X2. Digitize your own or use an existing color set (includes Pantone color). ***** Well, that's just a short list of new features in X2. Mark Zimmer FDC **** Yes, Mark. You have forgot the impressive mask brushes included, the multimask features, the new fill capabilites, the… well, you get the idea. X2 is a must in any Painter setup. And Painter 2.0 is a must in any professional imaging desktop. And here are some of the things that this guys are preparing for x3: Dear Painter Users! This is a document describing one of the new capabilities of our upcoming upgrade to Painter X2, which we lovingly have code-named Painter X3. I'll be uploading other feature peeks as time goes on… This isn't the only new feature! Just one of the many ground-breaking new ideas we're known for. Also: no questions about ship dates, please. This may get a bit technical for some, but it's worth looking at! Painting onto 3D objects. The object is to be able to visualize the 3D object on screen and adjust the surface color using any and all of Painter's brushes. This exacting approach is the only way to get a real quality 3D rendering. Without good texture maps, 3D objects don't look real. They look like that ferocious baby in "Tin Toy". You know what I mean, 3D enthusiasts! Also, we're talking *fast* painting onto the surface of a 3D object. Almost as fast as regular Painter brushes. Can you imagine painting pointillist color onto an object, or using liquid brushes on a "glaze" on a vase that you're working on? Painter will let you do it! Model Import These objects will be importable in two ways (1) from DXF or a private facet file format, and (2) as a G-buffer. Facet file format will include three or four vertices per facet (if planar). Each vertex can have a normal vector (for phong-style shading) and an optional texture map coordinate (for vertex mapping, which is necessary when objects stretch or deform and the texture must stay put). Objects have diffuse and specular qualities about them, so an object can be soft looking (like a superball) or shiny looking (like a billiard ball). Objects don't have to be closed. Object color comes entirely from a texture map. Cylindrical, cubic, and pass-through mappings are all supported. We will support painting onto a number of objects (up to 256 in the scene). Up to 256 texture maps per scene. Up to 256 photometries per scene. No limit on the number of facets in the file. I have imported 1,000,000 facet scenes into Painter and they work (rendering takes some time, proportional to the amount of the screen covered by the facets, and affected a little by the number of facets). On the other hand, a 1,500 facet vase looked perfectly smooth due to the Phong shading we employ and took a few seconds to import. ++++++++++++ Well, John, I can imagine you now with the phone in your hand asking for ten copies of the X2 and reserving 100 of the x3 extensions 🙂

Hmmm, sounds great. I'll have to put X2 on my list. How much is it?
#63468From: David TaffetOct 26, 1993 12:34 PM
I'm interested, as well. Can you make it friendly with Fractal Design Painter, too? I have PhotoShop and PhotoStyler, but few plug-ins. Painter has gobs of them built in, tho'…
#63333From: ROBERT RITGEROct 25, 1993 6:50 PM
Suresh: I'd give it a shot if you made it available. This sounds similar to a routine that Greg Pyros described to me once before. He uses a routine to "soften" animated images that is called from within 3ds. Bob Ritger

OK folks, I'll put in the work over the next coupla weeks or so….. Please e-mail me your details. If a coupla of you are prepared to help shake it down, let me know. Also…(and this is a *real* stupid question!) what d'ya reckon a fair value for this is…..the marketplace is tiny and the effort moderate….would I have to do much in the way s'port d'ya think…. Show me the light…(and don't say $5!)! SK.
#63469From: David TaffetOct 26, 1993 12:34 PM
The level of support would depend on how many people pick up on the program. The fellow who does the C.A.N. distribution did not think it would turn into anything much, but it's turning into a massive thing for him. I'll help beta the thing, if you're looking for that. (Especially with Painter, which is pretty unstable on my system. <g>)
#63357From: Ian ChristieOct 25, 1993 9:26 PM
Great idea! Why hasn't Aldus or Adobe thought of this? Too busy counting their dough no doubt. I'd be quite interested in a shareware product like this. I don't want to be too nosy, but I'm curious as to how you send commands to these programs; is this a built in VB capability? (I only have/know C/C++.) Ian.
#63381From: MARTIN G FOSTEROct 25, 1993 11:12 PM
Ian, I asked Aldus to put that batch-feature as a wishlist item. I was probably way too late for their 2.0 wishlist, though. Shame.
#63450From: krazy imagesOct 26, 1993 11:24 AM
Who knows, Loko? The upgrade is shipping right now. They took a little time BETWEEN the final announcement and the final shipping and they said that it was because they added even _more_ new features to it. Hey! It could be nice to open the effects windows and find a Multiple Effects option. 🙂
#63535From: MARTIN G FOSTEROct 26, 1993 3:51 PM
Ana "la loka", which program are you talking about? I lost the rest of this thread. I just received an offer to upgrade Photostyler 1.1a to 2.0. Do you have 2.0? Is it worth it. Sounds good on paper and I like Photostyler 1.1a, mas o menos.
#63824From: krazy imagesOct 27, 1993 10:20 PM
No Martin, I don't have Photostyler yet. I order the upgrade ($150!) a month or so ago. And I don't have to tell you what is the reason of the soon departure of Photoshop from Hard Disk Land <g> Don't expect an "upgrade" from Photostyler. Photostyler 1.1a will be to Photostyler 2.0, the same thing as 3DSr1 to 3DSr3. Like earth to heaven (or hell if you prefer, I don't know your perverted-which-see-phalic-symbols-everywhere mind <g>) Like the two stupid -I don't know real strong words in english- "animated" "guys" at MTV to a Warner Bros. Tex Avery's cartoon. Like… well, you get the idea 🙂 See my other messages in the thread for more comparisions.
#63844From: MARTIN G FOSTEROct 28, 1993 12:05 AM
so you think the Photostyler upgrade will be OK, then? <g> (deliberate understatement). Hey, can you help me with the guy from Spain called Ignacio? He's asking a lot of questions about buying stuff in the USA and having it sent to Spain. I don't know if that is possible or a problem. I told him he should find a local dealer in Espana.
#63998From: krazy imagesOct 28, 1993 6:44 PM
I wrote him a note in the Truevision forum. He is looking for a localbus vga/pal board of for real time playing and a sony evo or a (in)famous Sanyo for accurate truecolor work when he need it, and I pointed him to this forum, specially thinking on you and your DPS PAR fan club president condition 🙂 I think that every freeelance and small company in the world will go soon with realtime truecolor recording and the Exabyte unit for the Abekas. In fact, we have been looking with interest your comments about the DPS board, and also about the Matrox solution. In the other side, I think that it could be better to hold for while and wait for different/similar approachs from different companies. Specially, want to know exactly what DVR could offer.

Yeh, I just got the upgrade notice. No mention of any batch anything. Ian.

Just feed keyboard messages! Or even mouse messages. It's even easier to do that with C than it is with VB.
#63513From: Ian ChristieOct 26, 1993 2:43 PM
Interesting, I've got some homework to do. Can you think of any good references that cover sending keyboard and mouse messages to other programs? How does a program find out what else is running and how does it get a handle to that program and its resources?
#63594From: Gus GrubbaOct 26, 1993 8:21 PM
Take a look at the SPY program and SPY around! I remember seen lotsa reference about this in a MS System Journal a couple of years ago. Let me see if I can dig it up. If I don't find it, give me some time and I can compile some info about that. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
