Sysop, Why is this service such a piece of crap!!! I am getting very frustrated by this system because it is not consistant in its operation or logic. I am constantly being lead down paths with no way out. I have lost many of my messages because either the screen freezes or I keep getting the same requester again and again in a never ending loop. Why when I'm sending a message does the system sometimes ask for me to EITHER enter the name or id# of the person I'm writting, and sometime the system ONLY asks me to enter the ID#. If I don't know the ID# there is no way to exit because everytime I hit ENTER I get the same requester… "enter ID#". Why wouldn't your system ask me to enter the SAME information EVERYTIME? I don't know why it sometimes asks for one thing and sometimes asks for another. I'm wasting too much time writing messages that never get sent because I lose them in your system. What's going on here? Chances are that you won't get this message because I don't know your ID# and I never know if the prompter will ask for your name this time. Please help end the frustration. Dana exit

Dana, You need to go the practice forum (GO PRACTICE) where time is free of CIS charges (secondary network charges still apply). Don

Dana, What software are you using to access CIS? DJ On AP from Queens, the thrill and excitement of the Big Apple Where a little paranoia keeps you healthy and sane …

Dana, It is frustrating to try to handle CompuServe with a regular terminal program when you are new here. There are several ways to make this easier. First of all, we have a free PRACTICE forum that you can use to learn how the system works. They will teach you whatever you need to know to navigate the system, and will give you many ideas for getting the most for your money while online. One of the very best ways to get the most for your money on CompuServe is to use one of the automated pacages. For the Amiga, that is AutoPilot, which you can download from AmigaVendor, Library 9. You will be downloading a working demo which works only on the Amiga forums, but it will let you see how easy it is to use CompuServe with the right software. Once set up, and you see that you like it and want to keep using it, you register it online, and get an email message that turns your working demo into a full registered version that can use all the forums. It makes it SO easy! But only if your Amiga has 2.04 or late OS, a hard drive, and 2M or more of memory. I do hope you can use it. But do take time in PRACTICE to learn about the system. Betty

DO go to the practice forum. The commands for CompuServe are not all that cryptic, they just take a little practice. The TOP command will often get you out of any tough spots. I'm sure you'll quickly become adept at navigating the many interesting places on CompuServe. Hang in There!

Betty, When I downloaded Autopilot the written material said that it took 5M of memory. I'd love to delete what I could do without, but have no idea what that would be! Actually, I've given up on AP. Question: I haven't downloaded in a while, and find that when I try now I get strange messages, such as "hacked! Aborting", "teminal parimeters" or get timed out with 0% transfered. What's up? I'm on an Amiga 500, 4M memory, basebord and no HD, using JR COMM. David

David, You can probably do with about 2M memory. AP requires 2.04 or higher OS, 2M memory, and about 5M hard drive. You can do with less drive space if you don't do any histories, and if you download to different disks. It's the lack of a hard drive that is causing your problems, not the lack of memory. 4M is more than enough. Why not try doing your downloading with AP? Just set your download path to a separate floppy, or else download to RAM: and then copy to floppy as soon as you can so you won't lose it? It's largely the history and catalog files that fill up your disk space….and the message files from large forums can do it, as well, especially if you don't call regularly. I'm sorry, but I never used JRCOMM, and I just don't know what your problem would be with that. I know that it has been replaced with a newer program and is no longer supported. Maybe you need to get a newer term program. Wish I could be more help.

Betty, Thanks, I know I really need a HD. Maybe I finally have reason enough to get one. I'll try another comm program I have. I'd never had any problem with JR Comm before. David

David, What are your terminal settings for Compuserve on JRComm and what transfer protocol are you using? I used to use JRComm for CIS and it was pretty successful. The settings on your terminal program have to match up with the settings you have on CIS. If you do get a HD though Autopilot is HIGHLY recommended. I held off for a long time because I thought it was too expensive but since I've been using it I see it's worth every penny. Greg

Greg, I believe I have the right settings…I've been using them for about five months with no problem. Maybe I'll check them again though. Right at the moment I'm using Access!, one of the programs I wasn't really interested in. It doesn't have CIS B+, so I don't care for it much. What program do you use? Maybe I also need to update my comm package, along with a HD. Dave
