re: AutoStart
For those people, registered or not, that use my program AutoStart (WBStartup
replacement) I am collecting comments to include in a new version. I have
quite a few registrations, mostly on C-Serve (isn't SWREG nice) but have heard
little feedback good or bad. Just a few bucks come my way. For those who may
read this:
1. If you use it, what would you like to see added, or improved? Would you be
angry if I wrote
it to use a GUI library for a nicer interface (BGUI is my present choice)
or would this make
you have a beer?
2. If you use it and aren't registered (c'mon its only 10 bucks) why not?
What would it take to add to the program to make you transfer copious amounts
of cash from your MasterCard to my C-Serve account…
3. If you've seen it and don't use it (one look mad you hurl nuggets?) what
could I do to make it interesting for you? No nudity or violence please, I
mean features.
4. If you've never heard of the damn thing (this is probably most people!!?)
Download it please, and tell me what you think. It's on this forum somewhere,
search w/my last name EINMAN to find it and all sorts of bloody good crap.
Thanks for reading (and deleting?) this message. Mail me or post messages.

I can only tell you that AutoStart is a dream come true.
The only way I can imagine to improve AutoStart would be to make it able to
manage startup-sequence and user-startup files. But I think that's out of the
scope of AutoStart.
I cannot comment about BGUI. You've said several times that it's much better
than MUI, and I can only believe you. B-)

Actually I originally planned on doing that, but it seems a little difficult to
deal with the differing startups from 2.0 to 3.1. Of course most of my
programs seem not to work under 2.04 anyway…
As for BGUI, its better because its way smaller, and seems more reliable. The
new MUI 3.0 may fix this, but I prefer the thought of including the 100K BGUI
library w/AutoStart, rather than the user needing MUI on their system (or
including it forbid that!). I also like the fact that the USER doesn't need to
register it, for its full functionality. But I do, before I include it with
any shareware program, and I still haven't. Will soon though.
On another tack, the Obvious addition to it will be localization… But not
being quadrilingual or whatever my ability to supply catalogs is limited… I
could make up a cheezy spanish catalog but what I REALLY need is a German
catalog. Hmm… you seem to be living in Berlin… (hint hint how'd you like
free beta versions for the rest of your life hint hint)
>Actually I originally planned on doing that, but it seems a little difficult

Sincerely, Ian, I definitely would buy a version for 3.1 only. That would be
GREAT! All in one. A Chief Executive Startup Manager!!!

It seems you know what you're saying. 😉

I would really like to explain to you some more, but unfortunately my daughter
and my wife NEED most of my time… B-)

'Tis not impossible. I don't have all the time in the world at the moment, but
I may do some fairly impressive things with it in the future… I would
eventually like to see the startup completely controlled by gadgets, lists,
icons or whatever myself… no more text-file crap. Some people love it but
lets face it we're not all computer experts. Not everyone knows what the hell
"Copy ENVARC: RAM:Env ALL QUIET" is doing anyway and its hard for these people
to make custom modifications when they have no real understanding of a startup.
It WOULD be easier to let a program (like AutoStart) create your startup for
you, so you could be more guaranteed not to screw things up, delete the wrong
thing, or put things in the wrong order. Its not obvious to all people why
certain lines need to be in a certain order… It would be ideal for AutoStart
to intelligently manage the whole thing.
>>se me da realmente bien es el ingles y el frances el frances? que bueno! No
entiendo una palabra!
>>y por ahora mi aleman es infantil You still know a hell of a lot more than I
do! I couldn't understand a word of any language other than English or
Spanish… not one word. German OR French might as well be Japanese to me…
The only language spoken in the States other than English is Spanish and in
this country its really the only foreign language that is of any use to learn.
Though my main reason is that I had a Spanish speaking girlfriend for many
years. Plus the fact that I'm a geologist and am currently planning a research
project in Chile, so I'm taking a few more classes in it in school. (Though I
suspect it will be a cold shock to go there because they sound a lot different
than the Mexican spanish I'm used to.)
Well anyhow I appreciate your comments and suggestions, and do let me know if
any other gizmos you want come to mind.

Aha!!! That's the idea. Improving Reliability and Ergonomics by Design!

Aha!!! Love is the best language teacher. 😉
More about human languages. If you know spanish, french is not that difficult.
If you know latin & english, german is not that difficult.
The problem is that fluence needs vocabulary.

You could join SPFORUM here in CIS. It's quite good!
Y tambien podriamos hablar espanol entre nosotros! 😉
I wish you the best.

I have actually.

Yep (and sometimes language ain't needed anyway…)

Even better would be for me to add artificial intelligence and voice
recognition to AutoStart. Then I would call it AutoInstall. At this point, you
take a new program, put it in the drive, and say "install". Then all needed
system assignments are made, the way you want them, assuming you set the
Personality Preferences correctly.
But this version will not be released for a few months.

Where's microphone input in a A3000?

Ian, I guess for my part I'm reluctant to use things like AutoStart or MUI that
may tap into the basic workings of the system. In the past I've gone through
various tools etc to optimize or whatever my system and it has usually meant
hacking around, tweaking and, in some cases, trying to de-install things.
Since my system runs fairly well at the moment (still 2.04 🙂 I'm reluctant to
fiddle with it, particularly if there is a chance that some way down the track
program x fails and there is an extra thing to consider in trying to work out
the problem.

I tried it and it locked up my machine (A500, 2.04, 1 meg chip, 3.5 megs
fast)….I'm still pretty new at this, so maybe I shoud give it another try.
>>I tried it and it locked up my machine (A500, 2.04, 1 meg chip, 3.5 megs

Probably you did not install the required "systemplus.library" to your libs:
directory. Although the program is SUPPOSED to warn you, a bug made this OS
specific so a 2.04 user without systemplus installed will crash the system.
If this is your problem, it can be solved simply by following the installation
instructions in the manual. You CANNOT just double-click it to see what
happens… It needs this library.
Otherwise, some of my software has been known to have problems under 2.04…
2.1, 3.0, 3.1 users seem to have few if any problems. I have
reduced/eliminated these problems, but the newer versions are not ready for
release at this time.
Ian,
I am pretty much satisfied the way AutoStart is now. I really don't much care
if the interface is improved all that much, except maybe for "drag -n- drop"
entry of programs. But I don't really add things to it very often to really
worry about it that much. Perhaps a sizeable preferences window so I could
make it larger and see more of what I have entered on each line without having
to select and then scroll over.
-Marty
>>Perhaps a sizable preferences window
Good idea, consider it done. Not as easy as it sounds, but shouldn't be a
problem.
>>except maybe for "drag -n- drop" entry of programs.
Doesn't it already do that? I sure thought I had that in there from the
beginning. Just tested it, and it works with regular icons. HOWEVER I dropped
an AppIcon on it, and it barfed. Of course you're not supposed to do that
anyway, but I'll look into that. Does drag-n-drop work on your system?
Ian,
>Does drag-n-drop work on your system?
Sure does, guess I should read the docs before opening my mouth :). I don't
know why I never tried it.
-Marty
>>Sure does, guess I should read the docs before opening my mouth
Don't worry… I just read a little review of one of my programs in Amiga
Shopper (my stuff's all over their coverdisk) and it talked about a feature I
forgot was even in there… Somthing about setting the floppy buffers: "Oh,
right, maybe I should use my own program to do that too!"
I don't remember how the hell most of my programs work. I didn't even KNOW if
it had that feature till I tested it, and actually I only thought I had added
it, because someone said in a magazine that AutoStart had drag-n-drop! I have
many projects to keep track of, and lose track sometimes myself.
