Todor Sells Soul! 🙂

Microsoft Acquires Music Software Specialist, The Blue Ribbon SoundWorks
(17 Oct 95) Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com) said today it has acquired The
Blue Ribbon SoundWorks, Ltd., an Atlanta, GA-based, privately held music
software specialist. No financial details were disclosed. Blue Ribbon is known
for its AudioActive interactive music engine and SuperJAM!, a music-authoring
tool for musicians and nonmusicians, and other products.
Shouldn't that thread title be "Todor really rich now?" 🙂
Oh, dear! I suppose this means no more Amiga software from Blue Ribbon
Soundworks, then.
Thanks for the news, John, even though it is not what we wanted to hear.

On the other hand, I was firmly convinced that the sale of Precision to
Software Publihsing Corporation meant no more Amiga versions of Superbase, etc.
but I was firmly wrong. Perhaps Todor and company will spin-off the Amiga
versions to someone else…
Have you seen any new Amiga versions of SuperBase? Maybe I missed them.
On the other hand, maybe Todor WILL spin off the Amiga stuff to someone else.
Sure hope so.

OH NO, Say it Ain't So !
Gee, do you think billy boy will support the Amiga? NOT !
Another honorable vendor gone.
Can't blame them, money talks…….
I always thought that Newtek would be a prime Microsoft takeover target.
Wait a minute, no one show that to Gates, OK ?
Mike Brennan, Sir Render A/V
Don't worry. Gates would not be interested in old fashioned analog video
technology like the Toaster. All his multi-media moves are indicating that his
interest lies in digital video, video on demand, (more like point-to-point
video/audio/graphic/text network to compete with the broadcast network
concept.) He would more likely go after some system based on CCIR 601 (uh oh,
that number doesn't look right) D1-based system using square pixels and HDTV
compliant technology.
Due to the lack of Y/C or component handling and the composite D2 basis, I
think the days of Toaster desirability for a takeover are rapidly coming to a
close. If it was going to happen, iwould more likely have been Sony, Grass
valley, Panasonic, etc that would have been the suitors, IMHO.
BTW, none of the above has ANYTHING to do with how useful the Toaster is as a
video production tool. (I have 2 – they have bee worth every penny I've spent
on them.) It relates only to how attractive the company is to a larger company
wanting to expand its tecnology base with an eye toward where that technology
is heading.

Hi Wayne.
From what I understand,Bill Gates already bought the "open GL" libraries,
and I seem to remember him buying an option on some 3D program.
It seems to me that Lightwave would be the prize here.
BTW, I keep meaning to ask you why you keep saying Lightwave
PC is making good use as a door stop.
I'm interested in your thoughts on the subject.
If you want to reply by Email, that's OK.
Mike Brennan, Sir Render A/V
My LW PC is a door stop because I'm not sufficiently savvy at this point to
feel comfortable buying a WinNT station to do it justice. I'm collecting
characteristics of the proper type of station (4Meg video card, preferabley
with Open GL support or upgrade path thereto, EDO ram, PCI slots, etc etc etc.)
Basically, I'm not fooled by plug and play hoopla, and in the world of PC's I
know it is so easy to create a collection of components that don't work, that I
feel I need to be a lot smarter about them – and potential vendors or same –
before I leap. Probably be dec or if I decide to wait for P6, maybe as late as
April before I fix my sites on a specific machine.
BTW, I'm open to helpful hints of both the to-do and not-to-do variety
regarding a good hardware environment for LW.

Wayne,
I don't know about LW, but for WinNT hardware requirments, if you have'nt
already, you just must get the one of the HCL files from the WinNT forum. Look
for the keyword "HCL" which stands for Hardware Compatability List. Don't buy
any hardware thats not on the list. Also plan on LOTS of $$'s for memory. Win
NT 3.51 needs 16Meg to do anything. Networking and LW will take much more
memory I would guess.
After I scrap up the $'s, I'm trading in my 16Megs in for at least 32Meg and
I'll get 64Meg if I can swing it. And I don't do LW.

Gerald,
Thanks for the pointers. BTW, after reading some early assesments a few monthe
back in LW Pro and VTU I had resigned myself to a minimum 64 meg machine. Then
this EDO thing cropped up and now I got another acronum to get smart on…

Wayne,
> …I had resigned myself to a minimum 64 meg machine.
Then be sure to get a machine that can handle lots of SIMMs. Some PCs are like
my cow and they can only hold 4 SIMMs for 128 megs of memory. Others have 6 or
more SIMM slots and they would give you more room for expansion.
Gerald Bonnstetter, Bonnsoft, Ventura, IA, USA
Hmmm. I have 4 SIMM sockets, 64mb of RAM, and 2 SIMM sockets free. Now why
does this guy need to make sure he has a PC with lots of SIMM sockets?

Your not alone.
After the introduction of LWPC, and no end of the C= saga in sight,
I decided to integrate my own NT PC's.
I've run into all of the same compatibility problems as everyone else.
Along the way, I've learned a few things, (like PC's don't work 🙂
and I've narrowed the components down to a select few.
Other problems arose.
Some of the motherboards I tried didn't have "full size" PCI slots,
and wouldn't work with the PVR card. Also, at that time, you couldn't
run your clock at multiples of 33 or the PVR wouldn't work.
(that's supposed to be cured now)
Many a person rushed out to buy systems, only to find these things
out the hard way.
The more I get into PC's, the more I'm glad I owned, used, and sold
Amigas all of this time.

Another "saver" for the file.
I think I'll collate all the hints I got and float a "straw-man" for the ideal
Intel NT LightWave workstation. The shots taken at it might help all us
sufferers of MPS (Microsloth Paranoia Syndrom – sometimes leading to moods akin
the the other malady whos initials are made from the same letters) create a
buy-points list for workstation shopping.

So far as a Non-Pro Toaster/LW user/addict I'm glad I haven't jumped to an NT
WS or bow to Newteks attempts at extortion (ducking:^) when in comes to LW
upgrades. I'd sure like an 060 though. I've gotten over the intense want of a
DEC Workstaion of my own. My boss is putting in an Alpha Station at work to
control the film recorder I print on all day. I had thoughts of getting LW and
rendering at work in the off hours but not anymore :^(
Perhaps I can wait for P8 and Win2000. So far I've resisted the PC/Mac machines
for personal work, although I work on both all day. I'm happy to come home to
my Amigas……

Actually, Microsoft has acquired far more *tiny* companies than large
companies. It's cheaper and easier. I heard stories about their acquisition
of one small company that made my skin crawl… they made it sound like the
Microsoft rep knocked on the door, said either you sell out to us at this
price, or we'll buy your competition and put you out of business. Of course,
they *did* make the same offers to their competitors at the same time.
Repulsive and stomach-turning as his business practices are, I can't help but
wonder whether I'd use them myself if I were in his position. 😉
Mr. Zombie
but i understand he is pretty nice in his personal life.
Go figure.
Naturally, you'd know all about that selling of souls stuff, Herr Doktor
Faust, er Foust 😉
What, you don't think I've heard that one before? 🙂 Why, I sold my soul for
the ultimate personal computer back in 1985, and look what good it did me. :-!
How's the Zuma Group doing with those PC products? You're telling me that if a
Microsoftian showed up at the door tomorrow, you'd shoo them away?
>What, you don't think I've heard that one before? 🙂 Hey, I couldn't resist
that setup. The Devil made me do it.
>Why, I sold my soul for the ultimate personal computer back in 1985, >and look
what good it did me. :-! I bet you're not talking about Windows 1.0 either.
Well that explains those devilish Bandito columns.
>You're telling me that if a Microsoftian showed up at the door >tomorrow,
you'd shoo them away? Hell no! I'd ask do you want me to sign in pencil, ink,
or blood?
Seriously though, unlike many who frequent this forum, I don't regard MS as the
Devil. The domination of the industry by the PC and Microsoft go hand-in-hand.
I can't imagine the one occurring without the other. Microsoft has always had
a clear sense of direction and has moved the PC platform along with it.
Microsoft's recognition of Todor's splendid technology is a prime example why
they've been so successful.
