I have Ani Pro and 3DS2, and record animations in real time to either Hi8
or SVHS using the Truevision VideoVGA card (1mg). I noticed your recent
reference to your atvista cards with a high ntsc res. Would adding an
atvista card to my system enhance the res of my real time recordings, or
would I have to bite the whole bullet and get the equipment required to
render frame by frame to get a better quality ntsc resolution? I've
enjoyed watching you gestate the past year. What do you do about audio?

the only advantage of the atvista is its higher ntsc 32 bit color level. if
your recording to video real time then i am assuming your using a fli or
flc file. so your limited to 256 color anyway, so the atvista would not
really give you any increase in video performance. in fact i don't think a
driver is available for the atvista for animator pro. so the targa,
mediator , or other device is the way to go real time.
i personaly use the videologic mediator for real time fli/flc recording
when frame by frame recording is not required. if you can i would suggest
getting a diaquest controller and a frame accurate deck (bvu-950 3/4 or
better yet a betacam sp ) the difference in the rez is like night and day.

Thanks for the information. Where can I get the videologic mediator?
Is K Krell a good source for the kind of equipment you mentioned (betacam
sp, diaquest controller, etc)?
I may take this a step at a time and try the mediator first. Would the
mediator replace my VideoVGA or supplement it? What does the mediator do?

You can upgrade your VideoVGA to the new version w/flicker filter,
or use the Videologic Mediator if you want an external VGA->NTSC unit.

Good to hear from you. If you saw the beginning of the thread, I'm not
satisfied with the quality of the resolution I am getting from my VideoVGA
in real time recording of flcs generated from both A Pro and 3dS2.
Would the Mediator or the upgrade to the VideoVGA flicker filter give me a
better resolution? I can record to VHS, SVHS or Hi8.
Or, do I have to go to frame recording to get the kind of resolution I
want. I can get by with the 256 color limitation; I just not happy with
the resolution.

Pardon me for jumping in, but the best resolution you can get on tape is, I
believe, 400 lines. What you're probably concerned with is the fact that
real time is 256 colors. You will find that more colors (16 million, or so)
produce images that 'appear' to have better resolution. I don't know of any
software for a PC that does real time real color, so yes, I think you will
have to get a video contoller and a frame accurate recording device along
with a graphics card that does at least 24 bit color.
Of course, this means that you will need to make your movies primarily with
3DS since AAPro only does 256 color.

Thanks for your comments. It may be a matter of "appearance". Let me
explain my problem this way. When a flc plays on my computer screen, it
looks many times better than the way it looks when I recorded it in real
time to tape and then play the tape on a vcr.
When I record a flc real time to tape, I use the A Pro aniplay.exe program
and my Truevision VideoVGA card. The result is not satisfactory, compared
to what the flc looks like on the monitor.
Let's call the difference between what I see on the monitor and the
television, a difference in "quality". I guess the question is whether
using the Mediator or VideoVGA16 w/flicker will close this difference in
quality so that what I see on the television is what I see on the monitor?
When I play a 256 color flc on the monitor, it looks fine. I'm trying to
get what I see on the monitor recorded to tape so it will look the same
when played on vcr to television.

Either the Mediator or VideoVGA16 w/flicker filter will give you
better *QUALITY*, although your maximum _resolution_ is still 640×480.

I'm trying to get the same quality of what I see on my monitor to
show up when I play a tape made with aniplay.exe on my vcr/television.
Is this the *QUALITY* increase I will get with either the Mediator or
VideoVGA16 w/flicker filter? I think the 256 color limitation and the
640×480 resolution are acceptable if I can get what I see on the monitor to
the television screen. Presently there is a big difference (gap in
*QUALITY*).
Since I already own a VideoVGA would it be more cost and quality effective
for me to upgrade to the VideoVGA16 w flicker filter?
