#got it! (2.9)

Hi Mike and all at Impulse.
I just got my Imagine 2.9 disk this morning. Installed it without any
problems. After spending three hours the first thing I can say,
great work! I don't claim to understand the features after going
through the brief tutorial, but all seem to be easy to learn or
intuitive. The new perspective windows is just great! I could use it
without reading the description at all. I've been waiting for the
possibility to edit an object in the perspective windows (New Mode).
Thanks! There should be a default for the quick render. quick means
quick and not going through two requester. The new deformation tools
make working much easier and faster. Applique is a _very_ good idea!
The sticky textures are, IMHO, one of the most important features of
the new Imagine. This will make any kind of organic object look much
more real in an animation (I have to check this dino texture out).
Particles are a cool thing, but somewhat difficult to control. I don't
know how other programs handle particles, but I guess these particles
are just not an easy thing. The spine editor is also a nice thing. I
have successfully imported type1 fonts, but each time I wanted to
extrude and bevel them I got an error "all intersecting bug". ->
"Show result YES/NO" -> "not enough RAM" (which is nonsense, since I
have 13 mb free!) Sometimes I managed to extrude single letters. The
camera lines are nice, but with the new real time window there is
almost no need for them. Light lines are very helpful (although I
haven't managed to see them so far). For the PC version I miss a DOS
shell to be able to move/copy/delete files without leaving Imagine.
Is there a way to tell Imagine to show the pictures in a different
mode than 320×200? So far, thanks for the great program! It is worth
more than the $100 upgrade. -David
David,
Glad you got it.
Make sure you run a vesa driver before you start Imagine. THis will
allow the screen to show 640 by 480.
Have fun.
Mike
Mike, the problem with the sline editor that did not extrude my fonts
is gone! Don't ask me why, I did not change anything (except
rebooting my computer). I just played a lot with fonts (on my
COrelDraw CD there are 750 type1 fonts!). The bevel options are
really cool. Re VESA I have a cirrus card with vesa bios (so I don't
have to load any driver). Still, when I do quick render the picture
is 640×480, but I only see the middle because Imagine uses 320×200.
Do I have to change a setting in the .cfg file?
The particle requester is confusing. I have no idea how I have to set the
values to make what I want. I want the parts to fall down on the ground, bounce
a bit and finally have them laying on the ground.
I'm lucky! I don't have to work the next week, so I can play with Imagine all
day long 🙂
-David
David, I found a little program on Compuserve somewhere called
Univesa, I run it prior to starting Imagine and I get 640×480 on my
Cirrus Logic. I'm sure you can find it with File Finder. Just GO IBM
and follow the menus. –Rick Rodriguez
Rick,
but my card has a VESA bios, why should I load a VESA driver?
-David
I dunno, David, but it works. –Rick
Hi, Mike!
Sorry to jump in here, but… I got my 2.9 today, installed it,
created a quick object (fragmented cone), colored it, added three
spherical lights at about the same distance as the camera, rendered,
and got a black screen! The light sources don't seem to work;
bringing up the global light level works, but the light source
objects don't make a difference. Anything new about the light
sources?
Chris, I haven't seen any problem with lights. Make sure to select Generate
All for the palette. If you select Use Prior, the program would just give you
a black screen as there was no prior rendering. –Rick Rodriguez
Chris,
This 'NOTHING SCREEN" seems to happen to some, I know it is
something that you are doing wrong but I dont know what. The lights
need to be about 1000 units away from the object. Your camera does
not have to be that far away. Please check it again. If the
problems continue group everythin together and send it to me here or
by mail as a file. I will look at what you are doing and then I can
respond with a real answer.
Mike
make sure that everything, including the lights, is within the 1024x1024x1024
world coordinates.

Hi, John. I think the problem was that when I add a light source, the
size defaults to 32x32x32. If I increase these values, things work
better. So much to learn, so little time! 😉
