#Corel SCSI/WORM 5010
4 messages in this thread
I have a user in my company with a Mac IIFX (System 7.1) and a Panasonic
LF-5010. She's using Panasonic LM-D501W (940MB) cartridges with the drive, and
Corel SCSI v1.00 (June 93). For cartridges initialized with the old version of
Corel WORM driver, the SCSI extension works fine, but we can't seem to
initialize a new cartridge. MOUNT and VERIFY show up on the Tools menu, but
the cartridge won't mount when we try, and INITIALIZE is greyed out. When I
run Diagnose, I get an error. I just want to know if I've actually run across
a bad WORM cartridge (the first in my experience), or if I'm missing something,
or if the driver needs to be (yet again) updated. (We've had to update the
last three times we changed the Macintosh system software.)
Darrell,
The cartridge cannot be initialized while it is mounted. Dismount the
cartridge and please try again. The Panasonic drive has been certified with
SCSI version 1.0 for MAC.
I hope this helps.

OK; "INITIALIZATION" is not available (grayed out), when the cartridge is
inserted. MOUNT and VERIFY are. MOUNT results in an (unrealistically)
immediate return that the cartridge is mounted, and VERIFY gives an (equally
unrealistic) immediate return of 0 errors found on cartridge. DEVICE/DIAGNOSE
repeatedly returns "Unable to query drive for capacity. Sense key: 3H (Medium
failure)". When I perform a Device Status with the unformatted cartridge
inserted, I get "Not Available" for all the cartridge status indicators. The
firmware revision for the drive is 2.02, if that's worth anything.
Any other suggestions?
Darrell,
Just to recap a few things. If you are using system 7.0 or higher, you must be
using CorelDRIVER for MAC version 4.0.3 or CorelSCSI for MAC. The medium error
is indicating that the drive is having problems reading the cartridge. Ensure
that the drive and the cartrdige are well cleaned. Use only manufacturer
prescribed cleaning kits. Ensure that both are cleaned. I have seen instances
where if the lens was dusty a specific cartridge could not be formatted. If
the cartridges are new you can pretty much eliminate tham as being dusty
(although a quick slide of the media door will prove that).
Try increasing the bad sector tolerance for the manual mount to 50.
At each attempt, use the drive status option to record the error that the drive
is returning to our drivers.
I hope this helps.
