#Industrial Designer VR
2 messages in this thread
Hi Jim,
I'm new to this conference (found out about it from a Visual Software mailer I
received last week) but have been using Renderize-VR for about a year now. I am
also an industrial designer, working for a corporation, and have had fantastic
luck using VR as a rendering and visualizing tool. I make extensive use of the
feature in VR that allows you to import .STL files. This file format is used by
Stereo Lithography, a computer driven modeling technology and is widely
supported among almost all solid modelers. I create design concepts in a solid
modeler (ProEngineer) and output fantastic poliginal files that can be easily
imported into VR. Since I work for a computer company (Digital Equipment
Corporation) I'm producing renderings of server and PC related products. We
output 2000×1700 tif files and send them off to a production house that prints
them on an IRIS color printer. Product managers become our slaves when they see
these renderings and will do anything to get their hands on them. I E-mail .bmp
files to people involved with the project so they can pull them up in windows.
Would love to upload them to give you a look but the products are not yet on
the market. I try to keep things simple as far as textures and materials go
because we need to draw all the attention to the product design and form
instead of the environment. I do use the "decal" function to put on text and
logos but would love to let it rip someday with all the great texture and bump
map features of VR. I would be interested in how you are using the tool in your
design process and what kind of products you are involved in developing. I
also look forward to taking advantage of this conference.

Hi Bernie,
I am also new here. I found out about this forum by asking Mike Ferro if there
was online support right before I placed my order. I believe this is the best
method of support as others can add credence to your suggestions or problem
reports.

I would love to see them.

I have Visual Reality's solid modeler and have just started to redraw a lot of
our products in 3D. This is a huge change for me as I have used 2D for years
and I am still having a little trouble keeping my planes correct.
In the past all of our products have been drawn using CorelDraw V2-5. There
are still a few that were drawn with DesignCad 3D's modeler. Right now I am
still feeling my way in the 3D world.<g>
My goal with VR is…
– do basic fit checks and some dimensioning
– check material texture and color with accurate lighting
– print exploded 3D views for parts identification
– (prototype the product)
– correct all pre-prototype drawings
– draw promos of the product
– do a fly-by animation for presentation
I think I will be able to accomplish these goals. It will take a while
though.<g>
Your IRIS prints sound fantastic, unfortunately all printing has to be done
here for confidentiality reasons so I use a 600dpi HP laser and a new 720dpi
color Epson. A few things can go to a service bureau but not much.

I know Dr.Suchindran Chatterjee (Chat) he is the Director of Information System
Services in Columbus Ohio. He is a fantastic guy.
One thing I started to play around with is Corel's clipart and textures. There
are about 20,000 images included with V5 so I started decaling them. I am
still learning what VR can do and I am *very* impressed with it and hope I can
contribute with making it even better.
