#Video Driver won't work

I just purchased Media Visions's Pro Graphics 1024 Local Bus card and have spent the last 24 hours determining the 500 or so configurations that do not work. I was wondering if anyone owning this card is successfully running 3D Studio. I have the what are supposably the latest drivers and it runs fine in Windows. But getting anything other than 320 by 200 in AniPro is impossible. 3D Studio won't run at all with this card. It seems to be the only card missing from the list for Vibrant Graphics. I think I made a really bad choice here, and what makes it worse is that the store will not take it back. (bring on the violins)

Is the card VESA compliant? If so, do you have to run a special program to activate the VESA functionality of the card? If this is the case, you need to run that small program before 3DS or AAPRO, then select the VESA driver option from the Vibrant configuration in 3DS and the Screen Size from the Configure menu in AAPRO. Please excuse my igorance of somthing that's probably very obvious to most others. The Media Vision Pro Graphics 1024 is a Vesa Local Bus card. Does this mean that it's Vesa compliant?

<Does this mean that it's Vesa compliant?> No, not necessarily. Look through the card's manual to see any reference to the VESA modes that the card may support or if there is a VESA TSR that needs to be loaded in order to activate the VESA fucntionality(VESA this, VESA that…<g>). I'm sure Media Vision incorporated VESA compliant modes in their card. Lastly, I believe Media Vision is on CompuServe. Maybe drop by their forum and ask about VESA compliant features of their card. I've put your Media Vision Pro Graphics 1024 VLB card on the 3D Studio wishlist. Have you figured out how to put it into VESA mode, so that you can configure 3DS VIBCFG for a VESA Compatibles selection? Even though you've got a VESA local bus, it is a separate standard than VESA compliant. You might have to run a TSR or something as Jeremy suggests.

Yes, I configured 3DS VIBCFG for a VESA compatible selection and tried running it with no drivers, with my old driver and then with the driver that came with the card, but was unable to run 3DS at all in either configuration. I took the card back today and have re-installed my old VGA, 256K card. Which brings up the question (if you are allowed to offer an unbiased answer): what is one or more of the most powerful/easy to install graphics cards for 3DS? Lets assume price is not a consideration (it sorta is, depending on what I get for the bucks… you know?) Reality is, I can spend up to $1500 or so if I have to, but I would like to know what the "best" is. Or at least a line-up of the best. I read lots of reviews, but the reviewers arent coming from the perspective of using 3D Studio.

Stephen, I'm surprised I don't see a lot of answers from folks to your "what is the best card" question – you should rephrase your question by another fresh message with a title like "Best video card for 3DS?". We in Product Support are aware that Diamond and Matrox get a lot of kudos (ATI may be having problems with slow loading and switching from Materials Editor to 3D Editor, for example) with 3D Studio). Matrox cards occasionally get a bad report for non-3D Studio performance. Diamond seems to make fast cards and drivers. The list of supported cards in our VIBLST.ZIP file might be a starting point for choosing a card. I know there are good cards out there but are too recent for 3D Studio support.

Maybe he should rephrase it to "What is the least worst card?" <g> – Jack

Very well said, Jack. Very well said!

Stephen, Try the Diamond StealthPro64 PCI with 4MB – we can get it to you for about $440. I'm trying out a Number Nine GXE64 PCI this week – I'll try and post the results. Matt / AM Labs

Matt, Just last night I purchased the Diamond SpeedStar Pro (VLB) for $120. Probably not as fast, but it is a lot cheaper and hopefully I can get it to run with 3DS. I saw the Steath64 at the store as well, but I don't have PCI. I changed the Vibrant drivers, but still having trouble. Seems 3DS doesn't want to load if I've already loaded a mouse driver.

Stephen, >> I saw the Steath64 at the store as well, but I don't have PCI. << FWIW, there is a version of the Stealth 64 in VLB flavour.
