Hi Bob no I get ehe error when I attach the wings to the fuselage I seem to be able to move dxf files back and forth to and from acad and 3ds OK . I have not figered out how to move splin curves from autosurf to 3ds howaver. my autosurf is ver. 2c1 there may be a update as it so slow on redraw and redraw each window over and over till it gets ti wright. I did get the wings on by removing some vertexes in the shaper. Thanks Bill Ben

Hi Ben, I'm not very familiar with AutoSURF, unfortunately. I think what you'll need to do is make sure the AutoSURF model is converted to a polymesh before trying to do your export to 3DS. Let me see if I can track down some methods to accomplish this task, Bob

Hi Bob Yes one must convert to a polymesh befor dxf-ing to 3ds and it works great autosurf has real power I an having lots of fun with it. but I have a lot of work to do to make any tral use of it. I thinnk autosurf can be a real help in modeling for 3ds . Autodesk neads to tie things to gether more thow. Ben

I agree with you on the need to get tighter links between our products. One important hint to keep in mind for you. Make sure your AutoSurf models are backup before you convert them to polymeshes. When the model is converted to a polymesh and exported to 3DS, you'll lost entity handles. This means that if you need to edit the model some more and import the model back from 3DS to AutoSurf, you won't be able to perform solid modeling functions. Of course, I'm assuming that the .DXF export for AME models is the same for AutoSurf models. By backing up the original before polymeshing, you can easily go back to AutoSurf and edit the model, then convert the new version of the model for 3DS. Good luck, and have a happy holiday, Bob

thanks Bob I would like to see some space devoted to autosurf in the autodesk forum this stuf we have been talking is not in the autosurf manual or if it is I cant find. there neads to be more light on the subject. allso I tryed to get on the 3ds mail list through majordomo@autodesk.com is this the right way or did I make a mistake ????? ben

Hi Ben, I hope you had a good holiday. I think more of the AutoSurf issues are handled in the Go Acad forum. I'll have to see if much is discussed about transfers from Surf to Studio over there. As for linking through majordomo@autodesk.com, I'm unsure. I don't get much of a chance to cruise the internet. At this time, the internet isn't a primary support avenue, so your fastest responses will come from CompuServe. I'm sorry if that's an inconvenience, Bob

Thanks Bob I have founf out how to transfer from asurf to 3ds OK now. some one on the inter net that teach autoserf clued me in. I allmost gave up because there was an article in cadence that said it cant beone. I would allso like to ask about memory use in 3ds I thought that if you had enough memery so that you did not haft to swap to disk you could render all day with out writeing a swap file but once you started a swep file it would keep growing. but a frend is claiming that memery use grous even if you don't nead a swap file . what is the truth ??????????? and is it the same for 3ds3 and 3ds4 ? Thanks Ben

I'm glad to hear you're able to transfer your models successfully, Ben. It sounds like there's some miscommunication on how to accomplish AutoSurf transfers. What were the main things someone needs to remember to get their models acorss to 3DS? As for the memory usage, it's true that EVERY version of 3DS has had a problem with memory being used and not released efficiently. From what we've been able to gather, it's a problem with the Phar-Lap Dos Extender that our products use. Even AutoCAD will appear to not release memory, but it's far less noticable. Every time you render a scene, 3DS will use a little memory. For instance, if you load one of the sample files and look at the Current Status, you'll notice some memory has been used. If you render that scene, more memory will be used depending on your resolution, model complexity, shadows, reflections, texture maps, etc.. After the rendering, you'd expect all the memory to be returned. This does not occur. If the settings you've specified for a rendering use all your memory and force the creation of a swap file, the swap file will continue to grow with each consecutive rendering. If, on the other hand, you have 32mb ram and your render settings do not exceed 32mb, you should not get a swap file. In this case, your memory usage may vary slightly form one render to the next. There are several samples in the Memory Usage section of the Installation Guide (or maybe it's the Advanced User Guide) of how certain render setting will affect memory usage. I hope this helps, and we'd love to know what your source on the Internet told you about importing AutoSurf models. Bob

Bob I have not been in autoserf for a few days as I have been learning about scanning images into autocad and traceing parts. so I nead to go back to autosurs and see just what to do. I will do this in the next day or two and send you mail. as for memory ues in 3ds is the problem solved bt using command line rendering isn't there afile with a name like .vve or something this approach may reset the memory befor each render? I will get back to you on autosurf to 3ds as you know acad-13 writes 3ds files but there is no autosurf for acad-13 and only autodesk knows when Ben
