Alan, It wouldn't be any fun to buy your machine…you didn't leave anything else to buy for it! 🙂 Well, ok, a modem I guess. Seriously though, it sounds like a very nice set-up.

<<You're jumping ship? Oh pooh.>> My kids are slowly taking over my machine! I've seen Treasure Math Storm more on my screen than Imagine. Since there aren't enough Kids learning programs for the Amiga and The EMPLANT's incompatability with Broderbunds Living Book series, I've decided to "test" the water to see if I can buy a Pentium or DX4 system. It gags me, but hey at least I can play DOOM! 🙂 Wish me luck, Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-220e Inside

Well, Luck. I'm sad to see another lost Amigan, though, but I can see the time when I might become one. What's wrong between the Emplant and the Living Books? At least get a PowerMac! Support the resistance, however establishment it is. <g> Paul (aka Mr. Zombie)

<<What's wrong between the Emplant and the Living Books?>> The problem may not be universal, but with my Toshiba 3501 CD-ROM drive and FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit driver (recommended by Toshiba), ALL of Broderbund's Living Book series (i.e. Ruff's Bone, Little Monster Goes to School, Tortoise and the Hare, etc.) hard crash with a bus error. According to Broderbund, there is a incompatablity between the FWB's and their software. I wish I would have at least bought the MAC/Windows CD's instead of the MAC only. Live and learn! I'd buy a PowerMac, but honestly, I really despise the MAC OS. There really isn't any allowance for hacking around and usually when I try, I end up @#!*ing everything up! Alan- So couldn't you just use a different driver? I agree that the MacOS has a lot of shortcomings – when/if I get a Mac, even after they've improved it substantially over the next few years, I'm sure that as much as I'll like the support and many of the features and apps not found on Amigas, I'll feel like I'm putting on a straight-jacket. But I hate Windoze. OS/2 is nice, but there are no apps for it. Paul (aka Mr. Zombie)

<<So couldn't you just use a different driver?>> I've tried that too, but there aren't many Toshiba specific drivers around in the PD. I've tried some NEC and other drivers, but was met with the same fate. FWB gave me a few good ideas, but even they failed. It's frustrating when I'm able to run every other program on the CD-ROM drive, and the Living Books stuff bombs. Until I sell this stuff, I've got plenty of time to research the best system. I hadn't considered PowerMAC actually until your post. I have to admit, though, the DX2's, DX4's and Pentiums seem to pack more bang for the buck in the packages I've seen. The fate of PowerMAC's leaves me a little uncomfortable too. As far as putting on a straight-jacket, I totally agree. No more using AZAP to change little do-dads in a program. Jumping between DirOpus and Imagine to make room on a hard disk while in the middle of a render. No more hard drive utilities that you honestly felt safe using because you've basically feel like you grew up with the guy who created it (DiskSalve for instance). I'm sure you can think of even more reasons. But the fact still stands that my current system is user friendly to only me. My family can't believe the steps they have to learn to run a simple kids game (on the EMPLANT) when they see other PC owners' kids booting up their systems and immediately launching whatever they want (these kids are only 3). What's so hard about using the MacOS to play a game, unless it's Emplant-induced? Not that it couldn't be easier, of course. I don't know. I'm nervous about the future of the Mac, too, although if they get their OS out the door soon enough and liscense it and also make it so that NT and other stuff can run on their machines things might be OK. I just =hate= Windows so much. And anywhere we go, you're right, there'll be no DiskSalv. Paul (aka Mr. Zombie)

<<What's so hard about using the MacOS to play a game, unless it's Emplant-induced? Not that it couldn't be easier, of course.>> Playing games on a MAC is every bit as simple as on a PC (maybe easier because you don't have to do all of the cryptic installation). On the EMPLANT, my kids have to boot the Amiga, wait, double-click the EMPLANT icon, wait, load the CD, wait, double click on the game icon, wait, get a MAC timebomb screen, hit Restart, wait, reload CD, wait, … <<I'm nervous about the future of the Mac, too, although if they get their OS out the door soon enough and liscense it and also make it so that NT and other stuff can run on their machines things might be OK.>> I agree. <<Is it really that bad, or only with games?>> For a 3 year old, yes! If she isn't getting instant results, she's gone. Using an emulation within another operating system is generally the straw that breaks' the proverbial little kids attention span. 🙂 Don't misunderstand me, my wife can handle the whole procedure <bg> and set up a game for the kids with ease (except for the Living Book stuff). I would like to see my kids do it whenever they want, and that's just not an easy task for them with my current setup. Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-220e Inside

Alan, Have you considered a 486 bridgeboard, or wait a couple more weeks and get the 586e from UU for the Empolant? Cheers, Marty ProActive Images Inc. "WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT ALL DAY LONG" – RW EMERSON

<<Have you considered a 486 bridgeboard, or wait a couple more weeks and get the 586e from UU for the Empolant?>> Sure, I pre-ordered it (586e) several months ago. But what is it's speed and other incompatiblities. Jim Drew said not to buy the 586 only for playing games because it wouldn't do it well. Gee, how will other more graphic intensive programs handle it. Will I ultimately end up with an emulation of a DOS based wordprocessor and a Windows based OS that sucks worse than it already does on it's own native platform? These things have yet to be determined. I'm afraid of what the answer may be. Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-220e Inside

Alan, <<Jim Drew said not to buy the 586 only for playing games because it wouldn't do it well.>> One of the reasons that the 586e has been delayed is because Jim and Co. are rewriting the video drivers so that they can run graphic intensive games like DOOM. I have seen posts on Genie that the manuals for the 586e are in the printing process and that the entire package is very close to release. Jim has stated that any program that will run on a 486 based PC will also run on the 586e. You might consider waiting a couple of weeks before bailing out. Cheers, Marty ProActive Images Inc. Right now EMPLANT runs Wolfenstein, but I wouldn't show it off to my friends! <<You might consider waiting a couple of weeks before bailing out.>> You may very well be right. In fact, if everyone can wait another couple of weeks, I may very well wait for the 586e and see if it makes the grade. If it does, I've inconvienced a lot of people. If it doesn't, I'll throw the 586e emulation in with the whole package price. Of course, don't forget, the 586e was due out in Oct, Nov, Dec and Jan (from the mouths of UU themselves – not specifically Jim). Who's to say that we'll see the emulation before Spring? We'll just have to see. 🙂 Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-220e Inside

Alan, >According to Broderbund, there is a incompatablity between the FWB's and their software. The living books crash on my Emplant run an Apple CD150 and Apple divers. (But run fine on my wife's 630 upstairs.) >There really isn't any allowance for hacking around There is always RESEDIT. With it you weasel into any application and change imbeded sounds, graphics, menues, requestors, icons, etc. – and generally REALLY screw up the application! 😉 …Warp Engine Engaged… -Paul-

How much would you consider selling the Emplant stuff seperately for? Paul (aka Mr. Zombie)
#183413From: Frank VanellaJan 28, 1995 7:12 AM
Paul, I have an Emplant package I would be willing to sell. It comes with a mac 800k drive and Amia software. The board is the deluxe model (with serial ports and SCSI. I would take $450 for the entire setup. Frank
#183418From: Paul IdolJan 28, 1995 8:06 AM
Frank- The Amia software is the stuff needed to use the 800k drive? And it also can use my own hd floppy drive, right? Also, are the ROMs included, and what MacOS version? Paul (aka Mr. Zombie)
#183415From: Alan HenryJan 28, 1995 7:26 AM
<<How much would you consider selling the Emplant stuff seperately for?>> The EMPLANT deluxe board currently sells for $340.00. The ROMs are selling around $100-150 here on CI$. System 7.5 is $95.00. The other misc software retails around $60.00. Total retail $645.00. I'd like to get $450.00, when I decide to split up the system. Currently I have at least two parties interested in the entire package and quite a few interested in individual parts. Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-220e Inside

#183505From: Alan HenryJan 28, 1995 10:22 PM
<<have you gotten any offers yet?>> I've had quite a few people express an interest in either the whole package or individual parts. Only a few have actually said they wanted to buy, however, only for certain pieces of hardware. As I originally stated, I won't split the package unless the sum of the parts sold equals $2700. Otherwise, I'll end up with a stripped down system and not enough cash to make the transition. That's bad…:) What do you have in mind? Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-220e Inside
