Okay, folks, there is some serious consideration going into releasing unprotected versions of our utility software. Current proposals include the "premium" version, (i.e. protecting the mass market copies, and offering an unprotected version at a higher price.) Now, many of you have said that you will gladly pay extra for versions with no CP. You have seen DPaint. How much would you pay for an unprotected version (assuming you had not already bought this one)? Of course, if this idea does get accepted, those who already own protected copies will be given a reasonable discount on getting an unprotected copy. Also, one devious programmer here offered to handle producing custom unprotected copies. In that idea, users would call a toll-free number and order by credit card. He would receive an unprotected copy with his name AND credit card number in the title bar. (That would certainly dissuade large-scale dissemination of copies.) Thanks for your feedback. Remember, we are not the only folks who are copy-protecting, but we are trying to listen to all sides. Don't fire-bomb us yet, please. JJ – EA * Replies: 2045, 2055, 2065, 2114

I'd probably pay 20-30- dollars extra. However, being a Grad. Student, I'd end up taking the cheaper way out and going CP. I like the idea of non-CP ware for using with a hard disk, but I doubt that I will buy a hard disk for a long time, So, the only benefit (for me) in non-CP software is that CP sometimes is dangerous to the drive. I would recommend that whoever puts out CP stuff states any obvious dangers on the label. Like, "Software is Copy Protected, attempts at copying can cause damage to your system." Companies have been known to booby-trap CP stuff to either erase the master disk, or (smaller companies) to crash the drive by slamming the head in and out rapidly. I think CP warning labels woild be a good idea. I have never had any problem with CP ware for my 64, except that it takes a bit longer to load. -Wayne-

Bravo! Glad to hear you guys are listening to the public. If this idea takes hold at EA, I'll run out and buy copies of most of your catalog on general principles, and urge others to do the same. I wish you the best on this tough problem. — Bob Perez

Glad to hear this, I do want some of the EA products for my Amiga, But I will NOT buy ANY copy-protected software. Would be willing to put up another 15 -20 bucks for unprotected software. Thanks for your response. George Gregori

JJ, Wonderful, guy, that's all we can ask… for you folks to consider ALL angles before making the final decision. Glad to hear there may be a change of heart on the way. I think, perhaps, an additional $20 or so would not be too much to pay for non-CP, or maybe a percentage tagged onto the base figure. Remember, however, as I stated before, that you still must stack up against other packages which do the same job; a person who's willing to spend $35 more for non-CP may very well purchase ANOTHER non-CP'ed package to do the job if your adder pushes the price out of range. Of course this sort of juggling is for your marketing guys to play with. Re the name and credit card number… I *LOVE* it with two small exceptions. The concept is hilarious and beautiful, but I wouldn't want my card number on the title bar to be seen by anyone in my office when I wasn't around. I think displaying it ONCE on boot or startup would do the same job and would be less likely to cause problems. The other problem is that, of course, this can be circumvented just as easily as a CP scheme and you are back at square one. But I chuckle at the possiblilities for the opening sceen… "This software brought to you by WILSON ALEXANDER 3145-2247-0987-1453 If you have enjoyed using this program, please feel free to order other EA software on Wilson's MasterCard."
