#IBM 3270 TERMINAL
3 messages in this thread
Steve, we have a 3090-600 dedicated to our programming staff. Max users is
700 with 500+ typical. We also run as many as 12 test CICS's, several IMS
message regions, DB2, 25 batch initiators and a gaggle of other sundry software
products. We occaisionally bog down but not often.
Every programmer has a 3270-like terminal (3178, 3191, 3180, etc) terminal on
his or her desk connected to a channel attached 3174 to provide "sub-second
response" (and we often get it).
Oh yes, this is all MVS/XA, VTAM/NCP, JES2, etc.
We have another 3090 for production too, I forget what model it is. And our
network (T1 pipes) spans the US and Canada.
VM is not very welcome by management in our shop. They believe that
supporting ONE operating system on a given line of CPU's. We also have
countless System/36's and 2000+ Series/1's. Soon, there will be a few thounsand
PC's entering the network via Token Ring LAN.

Geo,
I don't want to carry this on too long since we are in the Amiga Forum, but I
am curious about your average TSO address space size ? Also, how much TSO
foreground processing goes on there (don't count in CICS users) ? I suspect
that with VM on a 3090-600 it would be possible to run 1400+ users with minimum
virtual machine size of 2M. We have a series of 3090-400s and Amdahl 5890s and
we are getting about 1100-1200 virtual machines on (including SQL servers,
batch, etc). One way or another it sounds like you're setting up you IPS
profiles properly to get that good trivial response time.
Steve
Steve, I'm not the MVS Sysprog, so I don't set the IPS profiles. It was a
management decision for the "sub second" business as they wanted what they
thought was productivity. We are currently exapanding our programming staff to
about 700 people.
We will never go VM. All our data centers (and there's quite a few) run
MVS/XA. We need batch as well as CICS for production. One of the considerations
of using MVS is that the TSO environment for testing will be the same as the
batch environment. (I mean control blocks and such) Developing code under VM
and running it under MVS (batch) is a problem as I recall. Up until this year
we were a 100% assembler shop (yes, applications too). Suddenly, managment
discovered COBOL and 4GL's. Our PC Application programmers will use either C
(yay!) or COBOL (bleah). (Of course as a PC SysProg I can use C or assembler as
I see fit – my S/370 and Series/1 background is also assembler)
Hey, it works for us!
