#DeskJet 500 Color
19 messages in this thread
As a Sales Rep for Hewlett Packard, could you tell us if the new HP Deskjet
C will need a different printer driver than the one already available on
the workbench. If so, is there one coming soon!?

Hi,
Sorry to interupt someone else's message, but it seems like Pat is
echoing my question (I just bought a DeskJet 500C 2 days ago). The DeskJet
driver with WB 2.0 works okay with the black cartridge, but when using the
color cartridge the "change cartridge" light blinks. I tried calling
Commodore's "Gold Service" "support" line, who said it was up to HP to
write/supply the new driver. Okay…. This morning I called HP Personal
Peripherals Assist, who sounded a lot like Bob's Country Bunker from the
Blues Brothers (we support BOTH kinds of computers – PC AND Mac). They
said Commodore wrote the existing printer drivers… So I called the Gold
Service line aagain & got the same answer… So I called HP, waited on hold
20 mminutes, found someone who knew of the Amiga, but knew of no plans for
HP to be developing a driver for the 500C…
The HP guy did mention a company called Creative Focus, and they were
helpful, knew what Amigas are, and are planning on developing a printer
driver to support the DeskJet 500C in COLOR (certain Amiga paint programs
utilize different colors, besides black, grey, and white).
My gripe is not that a driver is not currently available, it is that 1)
both companies' help desk people were eager to shift the
problem back to the other vendor (and consequently,to me)
2) as a recent buyer of thousands of dollars of these guys'
stuff, I felt I deserved a bit more consideration,
3) on the first call to HP, I had to explain a couple of times
that I didn't need either the MS-DOS or Windows disks…
Well, I'll close out my Marketing 101 lecture by leaving the address of
Creative Focus:
P.O.Box 580
Chenango Bridge, NY 13745-0580
(607)648-4082 (I don't have any affiliation with the company –
it simply seems like the only vendor with a color driver).

Craig, check out message # 42927. It's my reply to Pat on usign the
DJ500-C printer with the amiga. To make a long story short, for now you
can use the HP Paintjet driver (really!). There are some limitations that
I mention in above message, but it is usable, and looks pretty good!
Frankly, I agree that Commodore should very promptly get a driver out there
for the DJ500-C, since it is liable to be a popular printer. 300DPI at
about $750 should entice some buyers!
But I don't really fault them like you do. Commodore cannot write drivers
for each new printer as they come out. It makes more sense for them to
support the popular printers at regular upgrade times… and HP certainly
isn't under any obligation to provide Amiga drivers.
But it would certainly be in both companies best interests to do a good
driver. I agree 100% with that.
BTW, Creative Focus does do a good driver for the DJ series, (excellent
driver, actually)…. I wouldn't mind them coming out with a good one.
So check out the message re usign the PaintJet driver, and maybe we can get
this thing off to a good start!

Pat, some news re the HP DJ500-C printer. I'm not associated with HP, but
thought that I'd give you first impressions:
The DJ500-C (color) is fully compatible with any of the older DJ or DJ500
drivers. They function identically in b&w mode.
You *CAN* use any HP Paintjet driver with the DJ500-C, and it *WILL* work.
You'd still need to color correct your drawings for the most part to get
them to look correct.
I see two main problems right now: 1) the PJ is a 180dpi printer. It can
print 1,860 dots on each horizontal line (across the paper). The DJ500-C
is a 300dpi printer. It can print 3,100 dots across the paper. Since the
PJ driver limits each line to a max of 1,860 dots, the absolute largest
printout you'll get from the DJ500-C will be 1,860 dots, since it is (in
effect) emulating the PJ. All your printouts will be about 60% the size
you would 'expect' (ie. if you specified a 6" wide printout from
Preferences, you would actually get a printout about 3.6" wide – 60% – make
sense?) The largest printout you can get is approx 60% page width (unlike
the PJ where you can go all the way across). That's the 'size' limitation
with the PJ driver.
2) The DJ500-C has better color rendering capability than the PJ (according
to the docs), so that a driver that really uses it well should be able to
further improve the image (even over the resolution increase).
That will have to wait for a good, real DJ500-C driver.
I am looking as I type at a 5.5" x 6" color printout of a FractalPro
Mandelbrot image that just came out of the DJ500-C, via the PJ driver
(printed from within DPaintIV). Looks pretty good, but the colors are
darker. I'd need to lighten up the image (particularly the blues and
greens) to make it look better. There is *no* noticable banding, the color
blending is real nice, the small dither patterns are much better than the
relatively coarse PJ's, colors are pretty vibrant (and this is only on
copier paper!). All in all a very nice printout. Like I said, I

know it can do better… time to experiment.
Anyway, thought that I'd give you my 2c worth on the DJ500-C and the Amiga.
First report! It's not perfect, but it is useful already (via the PJ color
driver and regular DJ drivers)

I don't mean to interrupt, but has anyone tried the DJ500C print driver
that is located in LIB 10 of AmigaUser? BROwse using the keyword HP. It
was uploaded on Dec. 3.
I have a DJ500 and was contemplating the upgrade but want to wait a few
days so until a decent driver is available.
-Chas
Thanks Charles. I'm going to search for that driver tonight. Will let you
know results soonest!

Charles,
I also have DeskJet 500. What do you think the best driver is for it?
Dom Fontana
I user a driver called HP_Deskjet500. Not the one done by CBM and included
with the machines, but one I found here on CIS. It is a very good driver.
There is also Snevls DJ Printer which does a beautiful job of handling text
output.
The new ADPro k=d(2.0.4) is the best for overall printing of graphics
(using the Prefprinter) on the Deskjet. A Wonderful addition.
-Chas
Charles,
Thanks. Where did you get the Snevls DJ Printer and ADPro drivers?
Dom Fontana
The ADPro driver (Prefprinter) comes with ADPro 2.0. Contact ASDG in the
AmigaVendor forum for more details on that.
As for the other program, just BROwse this forum using one of the following
keywords: HP or Deskjet. You may also want to check AmigaTech, too.
Charles,
Thanks, but I just ordered DJ Helper.
Dom Fontana
Dominick, for all around control and quality of the DJ500 I'd recommend the
DJHelper program (and driver), published by Creative Focus. I noticed it
advertised in the Creative ad in the current AW (they used to sell just
direct).
Very nice driver for many purposes. It has four 'preferences' screens….
1) page layout (margins, type of paper, etc), 2) font control (incl all
builtin fonts plus support for downloadable fonts), 3) graphics (including
customizable gray scale conversions) and 4) a font control (ie. download
fonts, etc) screen. All these options control the driver, which ends up
turning out some of the finest b&w printouts you've seen. IMHO.
I certainly haven't tried all the other DJ drivers avail, but this seems
top-quality to me. Full control over your DJ, just what I want.
Creative Focus also sells disks of converted LaserJet fonts for use in the
DJ series, if you have a memory cartridge. Neat stuff.

John,
Thanks so much. It sounds just like what I've been looking for. I'll order
it today.
Dom Fontana
Charles, I just downloaded the DJ500C driver that is in Lib 10 of
AmigaUser. It seems to work just fine so far.
The main feature that it appears to have (graphics speaking) over the
Paintjet driver is that it will print full size printouts, rather than
scaling the output 60% like the PJ driver does. I have a full size
printout (about 7"x7") of a FractalPro Mandelbrot image here that looks
pretty good!
The quality appears to be the same as using the Paintjet driver. I printed
off the same two images using each driver (the PJ driver and the uploaded
DJ500C driver), making them the same absolute size (3"x2") and they appear
identical for all practical purposes. It's entirely possible that the new
DJ500C driver is a modified PJ driver. (actually HP recommends that any
new driver for the DJ500C start with a PJ driver, which you then modify for
300dpi, and then start adding features) I suspect that this new DJ500C
driver is a first shot at modifying a PJ driver…. sure looks the same!
Not to detract from it. The author (?) Robert Shimbo, has a CIS ID
(70260,231) and has certainly done the amiga community a big favor by
taking the first shot! Good job Robert!

Do you have ADPr0 2? If so, can you see how it would work using the
Prefprinter saver? I'm really interested.
-Chas
I'm still waiting for my ADPro 2.0 to show up. I ordered it right away
when I received the upgrade offer, but no show yet 🙁
I want to see that too 🙂 I'll let you know when I get the software and
can test it.
I have been experimenting with Black Belt's IP software printer
functions…. it allows printing of the 24bit buffer via the preferences
printer. Have some work to do to get quality right, though.
A key problem, which I think BB's IP software can solve, is the ink
corrections to match the monitor image. If you just print your image
'as-is', there is almost certainly going to be bad color mismatch between
the printed image and the monitor image. Since what we WANT is the monitor
image, the data needs to be modified before sending it to the printer.
Most colors need to be lightened considerably, so the first shot is to run
the image through a gamma correction. This helps. But unfortunately some
colors need a lot more lightening than others, so you still don't have
correct color balance.
But I suspect that something like IP could be used creatively to
selectively lighten different colors differently in an image, using it's
color keyed buffer creation and merge commands (and ARexx). That's a first
task of mine next week or so.

Thanks for the pat on the back. I bought the 500C when my DJ+ died and
just had to be able to use the color capability. I started with the HP
LaserJet driver from the examples in the RKM. When HP finally gets the
technical manual out, I'll modify the driver to use compression.
