Hi ALL, I have a problem I hope you can help me with. When I inter a message base and try to READ ALL in capture mode, after a while, – 50 messages or so- I start to lose parts of each message. I am using an Amiga 1000 with a SupraFaxModem at 9600 Baud, Ncomm software set to XON/XOFF. Any ideas ? Edson

Edson, Most of the high-speed modem vendors recommend using Hardware handshaking (RTS/CTS) between your computer and modem, rather than software handshaking (XON/XOFF). This is what I use with my PPI 14.4 modem and have no problems. I'm not familiar with NComm, and my Supra FAX modem is in my other office (i.e., I don't have the docs handy), so I can't give you any specifics about "set this here, etc.". Hope this helps…. – BobR

Hi Bob, As I am using an Amiga 1000 I have a problem with the PIN OUTS in the serial port IE. I can't just plug in the cable supplied with the modem. I have left the cable from my old Amiga 1200 RS modem plugged into the serial port and plugged the SupraFax into the existing cable. This means I only have 7 PINS connected and I think (RTS/CTS) is not working. Edson

I had the same trouble hooking up a Supra 2400 plus to my 1000. Get a RS-232 jumper box, (Radio Shack has them). Hook up all the same pins that are on the 1200, so all the same signals that are on the 1200 are passed. Hook up pins 4 & 5 from the modem to 4 & 5 to the 1000. That is your RTS (4) and CTS (5), my error correction will not work without it. With the jumper box, you can use a standard cable, without worry of the +5v, +12v, and -5v getting to the modem since they are not passed. Richard -> via the Amiga 1000 AutoPilot

Hi Richard, I have the SupraFax V.32 bis running through the PASS THROUGH of my old Amiga 1200 RS modem -7 pin- Do you know if this correct ? Or are you saying that PINS 4 and 5 have to be added ? If so could I not just cut the three hot pins ( +5v, +12v, and -5v ) and use the standard cable? Would you happen to know what the three HOT pins are? Edson PS: I think I have found the problem! Seems NComm does not inform the Modem that (XON/XOFF) is set. When I start a capture with HANDSHAKING set to none then -after 3 or 4 messages have scrolled by- turn on (XON/XOFF) everything goes fine. PPS: I thought AutoPilot needed workbench v2.0+. How are you using it?

Edson, I tried the same thing, hooking up the Supra on the pass thru of the 1200 Amiga modem. I checked the 1680 manual and it does have pin 5 (Clear-to-Send), so it's just missing Request-to-Send (pin 4). This signal is needed for anything except basic modems (no MNP, V.42bis, V.32, V.32bis.). On the 1000 serial port pin #14 is -5 volts, pin #21 is +5 volts, and pin #23 is +12 volts. If you get the jumper box and just jump the pins numbers 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,12,20,22. As for running AutoPilot, my 1000 has a Rejuvenator with 2.04 ROM and ECS Agnus and Denise, with a 25 mhz 68030/68882 MMR. It works great. Richard -> via the Amiga 1000 AutoPilot

Hi Richard, ->I tried the same thing, hooking up the Supra – Etc. Thanks very much for the info, I knew that my SupraFax modem was not working to its full potential, but it was so much faster then the old 1200 that it didn't seem to matter. I will see about the jumper box after the holidays, and will use your expertise to set it up. All the Best for the Holidays Edson PS: Can you still call it an A1000? 😉

The problem is probably caused by the XON/XOFF. Change that to RTS/CTS and see if things don't improve. —Betty

Hi Betty >The problem is probably caused by the XON/XOFF.< Using the PRACTICE FORUM as my benchmark, I have tried everything I can think off. 2400 baud is no problem. At 9600 I have tried NO HANDSHAKING – XON/XOFF – RTS/CTS – capture on to HD, RAM: and no capture. All to no avail. I don't think RTS/CTS works with my Amiga 1000 as I can not plug the SurpraFax directly into the serial port. Some problem with the PIN OUTS I have been told that 3 PINS have to be disconnected, but do not know which 3. So at present I am connected through the cable from my old Amiga 1200 RS modem, that means only 7 PINS are being used. One thing that does work, is when the messages start to scramble I switch HANDSHAKING from XON/XOFF to NONE, and this clears the problem up for a while, when it starts again I switch back to XON/XOFF. Edson – > I am using an Amiga 1000 with a SupraFaxModem at 9600 Baud, Ncomm > software… An unaccelerated A1000 will have trouble keeping up with the data flow at 9600bps if there is much of ANYthing else going on, OR if it is also trying to maintain an 8- or 16-color screen. If you are calling a 9600bps node, and are getting a V.42/LAPM connection (i.e., error correcting), then you KNOW that the data is getting as far as your modem OK, it HAS to be a problem in the modem to computer link at your end. Your best bet, in the opinion of MANY of us here on the forum, would be to download and try AutoPilot (AmigaVendor Library 9, AP.LHA). I am running with CIS at 9600 bps regularly and "cleanly" on an unaccelerated A2000. AutoPilot is a semi-automated Compuserve management program that lets you do the "fast" stuff ON-line (downloading, uploading, gathering messages) but the "slow" stuff OFF-line (reading messages, deciding which of the gathered headers to mark for message retrieval). . . . . Hi JimDoc, My old 1-1/2 MEG A1000 will not support O/S 2.0 so I think this leaves out the AutoPilot option. I think I have found the problem! Seems NComm does not inform the Modem that (XON/XOFF) is set. When I start a capture with HANDSHAKING set to none then -after 3 or 4 messages have scrolled by- turn on (XON/XOFF) everything goes fine. Edson PS: Have you noticed that holding down the right mouse button stops CI$ from scrolling ?

Edson; Holding down the right mouse button does not stop CIS but only stops intuition from scrolling the screen (intentional). -bill

Hi Bill, Sorry, I ment to say "Stops the -Amiga- from scrolling" All the Best for the Holidays Edson

Holding down the right mouse button does not "stop CIS from scrolling". The right mouse button is the menu button — when it is held down it stops your Amiga from scrolling — data is still coming into the serial port and unless you have xon/xoff working properly you will overflow the input buffer and lose text. -sja

Check out WHAP! (WHP19H.LHA) in library 9 of Amigavendor. It will go online and capture messages and build file catalogs for you. It does sound like it's time for you to get a hard drive! I see others have addressed the problem of RTS/CTS vs XON/OFF.
#82157From: Edson K. GrayDec 21, 1992 9:04 PM
Hi Michael, I have already tried WHAP! and put it aside for now. I have a 65 MEG hard drive, and this does not seem to be the problem. I think I have found the problem! Seems NComm does not inform the Modem that (XON/XOFF) is set. When I start a capture with HANDSHAKING set to none then -after 3 or 4 messages have scrolled by- turn on (XON/XOFF) everything goes fine. Edson
