#Amiga Service
11 messages in this thread
I've had a problem with my new Amiga 500 and would like to discuss it with a
Commodore customer service rep. It would be extremely helpful to me and my
local Amiga dealer to narrow down the cause of the problem I've encountered.
Is there any way to talk with a rep here on this SIG?
Stephen, you may like to tell us your problem. I feel confident we can help,
or steer you in the right direction. I'm sure Andy Finkel here can give some
assistance as well. Let us know what problems you are having.

Thanks, Greg. Here are the details (I've already placed a public message on
the SIG, and received some feedback, but I need more help): I've had an
intermittent problem with my A500 for the past month and a half – the
keyboard frequently locks up, and the Caps Lock key flashes once every three
seconds. Some Amiga users inform me that there this is symptomatic of a bad
chip, and I'll need to get it repaired. The frustrating thing is that my
computer is about 120 days old now, and this problem first surfaced with
about a week or two remaining on the 90 day warranty period – it only
happened once or twice then, and I didn't think it was anything serious. My
dealer is willing to do what she can to help me – she'll only charge me for
her out-of-pocket costs (she runs an authorized repair shop in New Jersey).
We're both trying to get an appreciation of the nature and extent of the
problem – i.e. what defective chip, if any, is responsible for the problem,
and what it would cost to replace it. Could you tell me, based on the
symptoms described above, what the probable cause is (please be as specific
as possible), and if there's anything Commodore could/would do to help us in
light of the fact that this problem did surface during the warranty period?
Stephen, that sounds like something is wrong. I can't tell you anything
specific because I don't know what it could be, other than there is something
wrong. Your dealer would be the one to ask what can be done about the
warranty. Hopefully someone else here may have more concrete details.
Best of Luck, -GreG

Stephen,
Is the problem heat related? Does it always seem to happen a
specific amount of time after the machine has been on? It continues to 'come
and go'?
Stephen, I really don't think that you or your dealer can do a thing
about the unit being out of warranty, and it really sounds like your dealer
is doing a good job by you. If she's an authorized repair center with a tech
on duty, why doesn't she just dive in and go for it? Good Luck Stephen, hope
you get your working machine back, pronto.

I think the caps lock flashing is telling you the keyboard processor has
gone south. It could be heat related, static related, a lose or bad
cable/wire from the mother board to the keyboard or to the keyboard
processor, or something like that. I'm in software, though. The service
center should be able to check it out fairly easily, though (at least the
things I mentioned)
