Where are you located? I'd buy a used Acer 386/20 for a home
machine at that price. What leasing company?
We too were told that we would have to use a proprietary memory card
to add RAM. I did this on one of our 2 machines, but only added 2 meg.
Then went to BOCAram 16 bit memory expansion cards (holds up to 8 meg, I
believe). Various utilities (Qemm Manifest, f'instance) show that the 16
bit memory is, as we would expect, half the speed of 32 bit memory on the
"right" memory board. ACAD 11 works (worked…I now have the problem re:
locking up when circle/arc commands or entities are processed. I think,
because everything was fine for a couple of months, that this new problem
is not related to these hardware issues.

I'm in Columbus, Ohio, home of CompuServe Information Service.
BankOne Leasing Corp. has a warehouse where they keep all the equipment
from lessors who have defaulted on their leases. They just had a big
auction a coupla months ago. I haven't been over there to see what else
they've got. I learned to stay away from auctions. I've seen old, beat-up
XT clones go for $400-500!! People get into a frenzy at auctions and don't
think about what they are bidding on, I guess.
Anyway, they have tons of furniture, copiers, fax machines, computers,
terminals, phones and phone systems, etc., etc. I try to go browse every
six months or so.
So 16-bit memory works okay on them ACERs, huh. Sure seems like it would
be a cheaper way to go. I don't necessarily need speed as much as
functionality.
I can't explain your hardware problems. Seems rather odd that it worked
for a while, and now doesn't. Have you done anything that mucks around
with the memory that might cause a conflict? Just guessing…
