#ACAD12 3D to DXF
6 messages in this thread
Yost Group,
I am working with the acad manager of The Glosten Associates, inc.
They design ships. I need the best info on the best drawing methods
for the cleanest dxf export and import into 3DStudio.
We have made preliminary tests with bad results which give only stray
lines here and there, no solid surfaces to work with. Could they
have drawn the mesh in the "wrong" way for 3DS? I believe it was
done using 3d polylines.
I am going to recieve more detailed info on how the file was
produced.
Cary Kline, the manager of the CAD department is deep into AutoCad
products and is trying to develop the animation/presentation side of
his business. For you information, the vessel is an Artic Research
Ship commissioned by the University of Alaska. We would appreciate
any help you can give at this point.
I believe the problem is a simple one, but I am just unfamiliar enough
with AutoCad not to know for sure. I know I have given you very
little to go on, just trying to get the juices flowing, or perhaps
the answer is immediate <g>.
Greg,
Hi, long time no CIS. We are developing new tutorials for 3ds3 fot the PPT.
Check it out. On the Acad to 3ds problem. Does the acad model shade? What
version of Acad is being used? Did you see it Rendered in Acad12????
What were the setting used to make the DXF file?? This info will help people
here to help you.
Good to see you here.

How are things going in WA? The Acad drawings have to be created using
3D faces. Plines have no surface info attached. The could use the
plines in 3DS (dxf format) as shapes to place along a path to create
the hull.
Ted,
Actually a closed Pline is meshed in the 3D Editor as a 2D planar object. An
extruded pline is meshed along its extrusion direction and if its extruded
and closed it will be capped top and bottom.
You'd be suprized at what some entities do when their imported into 3DS.

I meant to bring the plines into the shaper to use as shapes along the path in
conjunction with Deform Fit. It would require editing to make all shapes have
the same number of vertices but should work ok. Sorry for the confusion…….

Hi Greg,
You will get a better response from other forum members if you post your
question in section 1 where more people are likely to see it.
Regarding DXF import to 3D Studio, it all depends on what entities you use
and which module of 3D Studio you bring them into. 3D Polylines for example
only come into the 3D Editor if they are closed or extruded. Phil Miller, my
co-author on Inside 3D Studio, wrote a whole chapter on DXF import into 3D
Studio. Repost your question in section one and he'll probably jump right in.
