#Texture Map Question

I am a novice user of the Toaster (2000). I have several questions, including two that I will list here. For my other questions I would like to learn of a good source for answers. (I recently subscribed to Toaster User.) 1/ My first question is about creating texture maps. I want to model an antique tin box. It has artwork printed on its exterior. I tried to capture the texture by framestoring the sides of the box and cutting brushes of the images I need in the Toaster Paint program. When I view the RGB of the brush, thier is always more of the frame store than I cut. How do I isolate the portion of the image that I want to use? 2/ Second is a modeling question. I want to model a box with a hole in the center. How? When I try I always change the shape of the box. Thanks, I hope some guru will save me from my lack of experience. J. Wesley Helms P.S. Is Toaster Ver 3.1 worth the upgrade without an Amiga 4000?

Wesley, 1) TPaint has a problem when you try to use brushes as image maps. you generally get some black on the edges that you don't want. If you have an Image Processor such as ImageFX or ADPro, I would recommend saving the framestore as an RGB file from TPaint, loading it into the IP (Image Proc…) and cropping out the part of the image that you wish to use. This will work perfectly on the box. If you don't have an IP, you should get one, but let me know and I can give you a little more advice on ways around it. 2) A box with a hole in the center…If you had 3.1 (yes, you should upgrade…especially if you are a LW user) you could just use booleans. With 2.0 LW, you have to actually build the box face with the hole and then extrude it to the required depth. Basically, the best way to understand how to model this is to look at an object that is similar. Load the Capital A object (or B, D, O, P, Q, or R) from the Fonts/Common directory. This should give you an idea as to how to model an object with a hole in it. The key is to just model the face with the hole and then extrude it… Hope this helps. JG

Thanks John, I'll try your suggestions. I don't have adpro or image fx (I'm leaning towards image fx) I do have D Paint. ( an older version on floppy from an A500) Can this be installed on my hard drive? (I know MS DOS in and out but Amiga DOS is still new) Will DPaint help the texture map problem? Thanks, Wes

Yes it can, just follow the directions in the manual. However DPaint is not a 24 bit paint program and won't help you out with fixing 24 bit files from the Toaster. JG

Why does ToasterPaint have this problem with leaving black pixels? I just read a column in a magazine called "Video Toaster User" (nice magazine; you should subscribe to it) with a tip on how to handle this problem, but I don't even understand why the problem occurs. Or is it just a bug? — David Schachter who still doesn't understand that electronic smart aleck remarks should be delineated with a smiley face

It's a bug.
