#Wishlist

Hi Jonas, Here's my R4 Wishlist…
———– Modeling/Lighting
* It would be a very powerful feature if one could define a light
'Style', and then instance this style throughout the model. For
example, the style would indicate the color, intensity, range extent
relative to its center, and exclusion status for the light. Instances
of this light could then be redefined by changing only the style
def. I often use _many_ lights in complex scenes. It is quite
tedious to go through them one by one and adjust them.
* Another new feature I would like to see is if 3ds could reference
other 3ds files to build up larger scenes. If any changes were made
to the referenced files, they would be reflected in the larger scene
each time it was loaded. Not Merge/Replace Mesh.
* Improve the Tag wild card specifications. Allow the full pattern
matching similar to 'grep' or AutoCAD layer specifications, i.e. wild
cards using []~#A-Xa-z and the like. For example, currently I create
all my main morph objects without postfix numbers and all morph
targets with the same name but followed by 01, 02, … If I try to
hide all morph objects with a tag of *0? for example, this hides
_everything_. This enhancement will take this feature from "great
concept/lacking implementation" to an extremely powerful tool.
* Box mode on a per viewport basis. Box mode on a per object basis.
Fastview is great. This would be similar but even faster, while still
allowing some key objects ot retain their normal appearance. Not
'Liquid Speed' – 'Ice Cube' speed.
* Saved, named views settings (beyond [ & {) – saved in the 3ds or
prj file. Also a temporary stack of previous views, so one can zoom
in a couple of times, then zoom 'previous' back out.
* Saved, named viewport configurations.
* Saved, named object display hide/unhide/freeze states. By Color
hiding is not really adequate as it precludes objects in multiple
sets.
* The new function key assignments are great. Now allow redef of the
entire keyboard. Add a function for 'Restore Default Keys', so any
user could override to easily get back to the default standards. *
3dsLisp or 3dsPoco or … any interpreted command macro facility.
* Keyboard Support!!!: Allow specification of decimal places –
everywhere! Like when scaling objects. Allow arbitrary denominators
in fractions (not just the ones setup in Units Settings). Display
fractions as (for example: 5'2-1/2"). I'm tired of using a
feather/body english/telepathy trying to nudge the mouse to get to a
specific value. Frankly, considering how overall amazing an
achievement 3ds is, I just cannot fathom how there can be such
preposterously poor keyboard support. Ugh…
* Exclude _new_ objects from existing light exclusion lists – or
provide a toggle so that this situation can be controlled.
* If an omni light has a range set, display it's extents while
moving the light (so you could easily position it to just graze a
wall for example). * Additional snap options: MID of any
tessellation line, NEAR to any tessellation line, Perpendicular to a
tessellation line.
* Enhanced on-line help to include the icons and dialog box settings.
The help currently is very effective, but should just go throughout
the program.
* Display Delta-X and Delta-Y as you drag the tape measure icon.
* Full Undo/Redo capability similar to AutoCAD (it is fabulous). 3DS
should copy it!
* Auto HOLD, every x minutes? Or maybe auto Save to a file called
SAVMYASS.3DS every x minutes.
* A text file log (scrollable ((maybe passed right into the text
editor))) listing past prompt messages, so one can trace back the
actions to see what was done, particularly what happened since the
last time HOLD was pressed!
* The ability to copy one selection set to another, so one can just
add or subtract a few things, but keep the original.
* Segment Extend, Segment Trim, Fillet in the Shaper.
* Create/Outline in the Shaper should remember as a default the
previously used outline width to aid creation of several uniform
offsets. Imaging creating several wall offsets, all 8" …
* Support for more input devices (like Joysticks, Cyberman mouse…)
* Read and Write .DWG files. If Intergraph can do this, Autodesk products
certainly should!
——————
Keyframing
* Allow Drawing Units formatted numbers in Key Info (i.e. feet and inches and
not just decimal).
* For animated light colors, show the color in Key Info, and allow its
changing thru the usual color selection dialog.
* Allow the printing of the object attachment tree.
——————–
Rendering
* Real-time shading (even flat!). I've been using this freeware 320x200x8 no
antialias/no mapping real-time rendered from the Cyber Forum, just because it
is so helpful/informative to fly around in a model.
* Include a total time thus far for the entire animation in the rendering in
progress box.
* 16 bit FLCs.
——————
IPAS4
I have read the text file on IPAS3. Fantastic! I would like to see the
addition of some mechanism to allow command macros.
——————-
Documentation
* The team which writes the 3ds docs should also write the IPAS toolkit/IPAS
boutique docs!
* The color section of the reference manual is great. Greatly expand
the artists comments on how they created their images. Not 5 lines,
but several pages …Include any models you can from these images on
the CD as the ones currently included are very informative.
——————–
Misc nit picking
* Exit the text editor back to the other 'modules' by pressing the
corresponding F1-F5 function key (not just File/Exit).
* Eliminate OMNI lights from lights presented by Lights/Spot/Adjust/H
* All settings in 3ds.set should be configurable via dialog box.
——————–
The World Conquering Implementation
* 3D Studio/NT.
Mark,
<< SAVEMYASS.3ds and many more wishes.. >> 🙂
got them.
I must be the only 3DS user who cringes at the idea of going Windows
NT! If one is to consider all the additional code for just what Mark
has suggested let alone the hundreds of other comments, I wonder how
in the world that poor CPU is supposed to handle it all. And I wonder
if its going to require the processing speed of a Pentium just to
keep up with what R3 is capable of doing on a 66. Added features are
great but if its a trade-off I want SPEED SPEED SPEED and more SPEED!
And I would prefer the effort going into things like more
sophisticated shading and rendering algorythms and spline control
etc. than on frills. Not that I think Marks suggestions aren't good
ones. But I want to see 3DS a nimble 911s as opposed to a living
room 928. Keep it fast and lean with good to exceptional handling!
(My fears and concerns FWIW.)
For once we agree FOWA
Don,
>> For once we agree <<
Not once, many times! How many technical questions have we
complimented each other on? Lots and lots. FWIW
<< If one is to consider all the additional code for just what Mark
has suggested let alone the hundreds of other comments, I wonder how
in the world that poor CPU is supposed to handle it all.>>
I don't know if added code of the sort Mark listed really would slow
it down… There were over 300 new features in R3, but the interface
seems as zippy to me as it ever was.
RE NT – the neat thing about NT is that R4400 chips are cheap and very
fast – if Yost Group just ported the rendering engine, you could get
a helluva render farm with just 4 NT stations running. Cost would be
less than $10,000 even today…
Your points are well taken, only time will tell what kind of new game
we'll all be playing. The idea of SoftImage and 3DS competing in the
same operating environment does not appeal to me however. As a matter
of fact, I wish that MS would stick to writing the best OS system
possible, and not compete with other software developers. FWIW
>> I wish that MS would stick to writing the best OS system possible<<
Did you mean that to sound like MS is already writing the best OS
system possible? Wow. I disagree so completely. I think DOS is the
biggest peice of CACA. It's outdated, underpowered, and generaly
limiting in the most blatant ways. How 'bout if MS would just try to
write a _half assed ok_ operating system? If MS wanted to write a
UNIX inspired OS (DOS) why did they pick the worst part of UNIX
(complicated, steep learning curve) and not the good parts
(incredible flexibility, incredible file handling capabilities,
incredible network capabilities, great shells, etc…)?
>> Did you mean that to sound like MS is already writing the best OS
system possible? <<
NO, not at all, and that's the point. If that were true, I wouldn't
be as reluctant to get on the NT bandwagon, now would I? Which if you
think DOS is bad, welcome to my Nightmare! Maybe if MS was to
concentrate on writing the best OS system possible instead of
expanding its empire with other software developement we'd really
have something. But UNIX is getting to look better and better all the
time. And I'm getting tired of being dependent on MS for the next
crippling development. To tell you the truth, I'd like to see some
serious Sherman Anti-Trust laws applied. Get them out of the
peripheral software development business. So if you want to jump on
a bandwagon, go jump on MS! <g>
I've been jumping on MS ever since I upgraded from a 286 to a 386 <g>.
I think Bill Gates is Satan <g>.
>> I think Bill Gates is Satan. <<
Well, once upon a time, he was sort of a hero, because he went up
against IBM and won. Now of course the roles have changed. And of
course the moral to the story is competition is good! IMHO
How about when you pick Lights(or Camera)/????/Adjust (or Move or
Hotspot, etc) the prompt line would show the name of the light (or
camera) that the cursor is over. Sometimes I clone a light or camera
and move it just a bit to try a subtle adjustment — but then can't
tell which one is which without trial and error!
<< camera/light wish ..>>
got it.
Quite a list Mark. Looks like you gave it a lot of thought. Hey,
where did you say the Cyber real-time shader was? Which forum? what file?
— Steve
The program is called REND386. Its freeware and the file I
downloaded had the source code (Borland C) as well as the
executable. To get it: GO CYBERF, then keyword search for REND386.
You get lots of options (I got the Cyberman version, and I think it
was about a 650K zip file). Also be sure to get the DXF2PLG
converter so you can import your 3ds models.
I could not find any readme files for it. If you press the H key
while its running, you get some online help – well, actually about 4
words per command! Anyway its pretty easy to fumble through.
The rendering quality is quite crude (understatement), but it
constantly displays your frame rate while doing fly-thrus, and it
easily maintains 10 fps on my 486/50. Its cool for moving
about/over/into models. Have fun 🙂
Thanks Mark.. I'll look into it.
— Steve
Hmm… maybe we should add direct 3DS -> PLG conversion in
InterChange? I wonder how REND386 does with complex models. I don't
think DXFPLG can handle the polyface meshes that come out of 3DS.
I just downloaded REND386, and am curious how to run it. There was
NO documentation in the zip file I downloaded, and I can't figure out
how to render a .plg
Hi John,
Did you download the DXFPLG file? It converts 3ds dxf files into plg's.
Run it with no command line parameters and it will display a help screen.
Once you have converted some files, from the command line enter:
rend386 myfile.plg …
I have found that files with over 10,000 faces or so crash it. I could not
find any readme files for it either. You can however type an H and get a very
limited amount of menu help. I _think_ if you press these keys in order, you
will be flying around your model:
V F J …now move the mouse around…
If you are zoomed in too close, try typing the minus sign a couple times.
Mark
I tried doing what you said and got a message to the effect of "rend386.cfg not
present, using defaults", then into the screen where the rendered object should
be, but there's nothing there.
FWIW, this is the cyberman version, but I'm using a Kurta XGT in mouse
emulation mode. I suppose this could be the problem.

I posted a message in the cyberf forum about documentation for
rend386. Someone told me to look into a book called Virtual Reality
Creations by Dave Stampe, Bernie Roehl, and Hohn Eagan. I got this
book today, and maybe half of its 600 or so pages are devoted to
rend386. The book comes with a copy of the software and a bunch of
'worlds' you can move thru. Some of them are pretty cool, albeit
simple. Theres one which is an 'amusement park' with a spinning
disk, ferris wheel, balloon ride…You move around in the park, and
when you get close to a ride, you (the camera) is attached and you
go for a ride. Again, its only 320x200x8, but its interesting. A
fair amount of the book deals with how to create these worlds. I'm
using a joystick to move around and it is really very intuitive,
which is why I would like to see 3ds implement something like this
for keyframing camera motion or manipulating objects.
Anyway, it you still have an interest in pursuing this program, I
think the book is a good place to look. It cost $36.00.
Thanks for the tip. I've heard of the book, and will look for it next time I'm
lit. shopping.

Hi John,
About the biggest models I've loaded into rend386 are ~10K polygons . Its
slows it down of course, but it still can move around in it a few frame a
second. Bigger models just crash it. Regarding the polyface mesh support of
DXF2PLG, it seems to load the 3ds variety fine, while the dxfs right out of
acad don't get very far. As far as InterChange support for the PLG format, if
rend386 is the only app which uses this format, I'd skip it and concentrate on
the bigger markets. How about .DWG <g>.
Mark
Excellent wishlist. I really like the improvements you list – I hope
some of them get implemented!
Mark:
Great list! I like the light "style" idea in particular. I would like
to add my vote to the many who would like to see 3ds run under NT or
any OS that takes advantage of DEC's Alpha chip. I say pack the
program with as many features as possible. If you could add code to
3ds which would crush ice, heat up some White Castle burgers, fill
out my taxes and automatically keep my TV from showing another Tonya
Harding report I'd ask Jonas to throw it on the Wish List. When I
think of it, it'd make my day to see a message from Jonas:
<<<crush ice, heat up some White Castle burgers, fill out my taxes and
automatically keep my TV from showing another Tonya Harding report>>
Got 'em.
I'm with you, More Features. There are all kinds of subtleties in 3ds
which make it obvious it is developed by people who USE the software
and don't just write it. These things go a long way toward making
the program powerful and _pleasant_ to use.
As for NT: Access to other more powerful platforms is one very good
reason for 3ds/NT. If the other platforms run faster and cost less,
I'd be perfectly happy to switch from Intel. I think its a good
thing to have the options.
Mark
PS I'll second your Terminate the Tonya (coverage that is)/Compute the
taxes requests!
Mike WMike White SunDog Pro….@Schreiber.com I'm Going To jump in on
this conv… I hate windows me and R.J. My programmer want to make a
commerical installing windows on an old Xt And taking the hard drive
out and throwing it out the window… But back on track 3ds on
windows 4 or higher windows multi tasking programes 3ds has a bright
future .. Believe me as developers for Schreiber we're trying to make
routine that will surpass SGI I believe in this for fact esspically
mutitasking 3ds on rendering .Imagine on a power pc wit 500 megs of
ram 3ds and windows4 multi tasking 3ds true power Imagine In a year
the sprrds and power we'll be running at .. It going to a great year
and many more for 3ds it's still a baby of a programe just think
three years oldjust wait for the near furtur…. Well I have to go
hope to hear from you guys Mike White SunDog Pro…@Schreiber.com
Hi Mike,
Good to hear about your developements on the way!
