If I was going to animate a torso that had to have absolutely no seams, I'd use Bones Pro and Smooth. – G

>> If I was going to animate a torso that had to have absolutely no seams, I'd use Bones Pro and Smooth. << I am going in circles :z I have Bones Pro and have tried smooth. I still get obvious seems. What is the secret? What is this forum for? I am sure if I spend another twenty dollars I can go buy the Special Effects book, but then what do I have a Compuserve account for? I am looking for concrete suggestions, something I can use to get results. Is there any way to be more specific? Thanks. -James Franssen

Hi James, << I am looking for concrete suggestions, something I can use to get results. Is there any way to be more specific? >> For Bones Pro questions, you may want to start a dialog with Digimation at 72320,2042. jonas[adesk]

James, it's hard to tell you exactly what you need to do because I have no idea what your project is like. If you'd like to reduce your file to it's simplest representation of your problem and Email it to me, I'd be glad to take a look at it and help you with the problem if I can. -Alan

>> James, it's hard to tell you exactly what you need to do because I have no idea what your project is like. << Thanks Alan. It is very simple, all I am trying to do is create a human torso with VERY realistic attributes such as chest muscles, abdominal, back, etc. All I have done so far is created a sphere with as many faces as allowed (100) and a cylinder the same and created a Boolean join with them for a test. I reshaped the sphere to emulate the shape of a chest muscle before the Boolean. After the Boolean I've tried using SLICE, but as Gary already pointed out, this is not the way to use SLICE for SKIN. So I tried using BONES PRO SMOOTH, but I still have weird seamed connects. I simply want to know the best way to create a seamless join between two objects. Maybe I should be using something else besides spheres? Thanks. -James Franssen

From the way it sounds, I think it would be a much better idea to test these things using mesh objects that are closer to what you will be eventually using. That being said, I can't see why Smooth.pxp shouldn't be able to smooth out the seam between two spheres. Have you done the Smooth tutorial in the manual? Having plenty of faces to work with and experimenting with smoothing groups should help you get the effect you are after. For example, to test the Bones Pro/Smooth software I chose the kangaroo mesh on the WCT, because it was already made to be animated using seperate, linked objects. After doing a little Tesselating, Booleaning, and Smooth.PXP-ing, I was able to get a very nice seamless connection between the limbs and the body, which animated beautifully in Bones Pro. Next, I added a "wrinkle" bump map around the joints and things really started to look good. Make sure Smooth has plenty of faces to work with (you can always Optimize them down later if you have the routine), and experiment with it's Blend and Smooth functions, and you should be able to get what you are looking for. Have fun, -Alan

If you're still getting seams after using Smooth, you need to contact the Digimation folks for a little lesson on exactly how to use it. (the suggestion re smoothing groups might be apt, here) Also, it looks like AlanI has offered his services in helping you out. – G
