#Hard Disk Full Client
9 messages in this thread
Hi all!
Well It's a first for me, I've got a client that called me over to his place
because 3D Studio was giving him a "Write Error" and he was hoping he wouldn't
have to bomb out because he hadn't saved the project file.
You guessed it…a Hard Drive Full.
Well we had to bomb out and it seems we've got more to worry about that
renaming the Project.bak file… even though we cleaned 700MB out of his 1GIG
Drive he is now getting Bad Clusters poping up.
Imeadiatly after we ran scandisk (dos 6.22) 2 bad clusters showed up.
We backed up a couple of projects files and ran scandisk again and another bad
cluster poped up. It appears as if this hard drive is going south.
Does anyone know if a Hard Disk Full Can cause this and if so can we fix it and
how.
I was thinking we could try to tape back up his program files and reformate
then reload.
Or is this 1gig drive totally trashed?
Thanks in advance for any hardware wizards that care to answer this.

I don't have the experience to answer you but I wanted to ask if, when your
client got the write error
msg, he didn't just exit to dos, call up his file mgr and delete
SOMETHING…ANYTHING!! Then exit back to 3ds and save his prj file!! I learned
this the HARD way, losing some 16 hrs worth of modeling!! (I would send the
Evil Eye to the wall plug that my UPS plugs ino for weeks afterwards cause
where do erased files go??)
I know this is simple minded stuff to most other 3ds users but I feel more
in control of my destiny
now that I know of this work around.
If this isn't the same situation I'd like to hear the outcome for my own
protection!!
Thanks, Gary (been there, done that) Angle
Thanks for responding Gary,
No he didn't exit to dos but when I got there I did and I was able to run
Tree86 which told me the hard disk was full. I then erased about 100MB of his
Targa files and we thought that was the end of it. However we're now getting
the Cluster failiers and as Gary says I don't think we'll be able to trust this
drive.

I've run into this before, and it appears Scandisk *might* actually be at
error. I can't remember exactly how we came to this conclusion, but it was
obvious that something was wrong when consecutive runs of Scandisk kept giving
more and more reports of bad clusters. As I recall, we finally ran Scandisk
*without* a surface scan, just to make sure there were no FAT problems or bad
clusters, then went directly to Defrag, and, voila, Scandisk's surface scan
found no errors. The best thing would be to back up the hard drive, re-format,
and re-load the software. I personally am convinced there is a subtle bug in
Scandisk's surface scan, but I'm not sure what triggers it.
BTW, speaking of backups, I just purchased a new Colorado Jumbo 1400 1.4 gig
internal tape backup. They aren't even advertised yet, but the list is only
$429, and includes a blank tape, (680 megs uncompressed), and a 16 bit ISA
controller for backup speeds of 17 megs/minute. It will also read and restore
tapes made with the all the lower capacity Jumbo and Trakker units, (though it
will only write backups to the higher capacity tapes). I'm installing it later
today; hope it all goes well. 'Just about the most inexpensive archival storage
I've seen.
John
Thanks for the reply.
Nope, Defrag and Scandisk have now been run numerous times and we're loosing
about a Cluster/Block a Day.
Thanks for your efforts.

Congratulations! I knew if you stuck with this business long enough someone
would come along! <Really Huge Grin!!>

Seriously, I thing the disk is on the way down. Back up everything on it and
send it back to the manufacturer. The other option is to try a full low level
format, then high level, and pray, but I wouldn't ever trust the drive again.
Greg Pyros
Thanks Greg!
I kind of figured that the drive was history.
Oh…Well, Since it's a Micron we'll just have to have him call them and get
the drive replaced.
I sure hope they've got on-site because this is a mission critical machine.

James,

Micron does for the 1st year of the machine. The on-site service is provided
through General Electric.
