#Rayman Problems
9 messages in this thread
Hello Michael
Im exploring Rayman and Ive got a couple of problems.
You announced that Rayman would have two modules, one that works from within
3ds and a stand alone renderer. I cant find reference to using rayman from
within 3ds. How can I do this?
If I try to shell out to rayshell form 3ds I get fatal error lack of memory.
Leaving and entering 3ds to tweak a scene for rayshell is a MAJOR pain so I
look foward to your solution on this problem.
Every time I start Rayshell it goes into configure mode and I have to enter the
correct display driver( it always shows the wrong one so I have to hit d and
change it ) The manual says that configuration only happens the first time. Any
ideas?
Thanks
Ed
Hi Edward!
We decided not to use the RayMan IPAS because they doesn`t have all the
features that RayShell has. And it`s slows RayMan down when it`s running inside
3DS. But you can take a look at yourself:
copy the file RAYMAN\SYS\KRNLINI.RES to your 3DS process directory with the
name RAYINI_I.PXP
copy the file RAYMAN\SYS\KRNLMAT.RES to your 3DS process directory with the
name RAYMAT_I.PXP
After this you`ll have the RayMan IPAS routines. They might help you but it`s
highly recommend to use RayShell.
Regarding the display driver: take a look at your RayMan directory. There must
be an RAYSHELL.BAT. You have to start this batch after you`ve configured your
display driver once.
Regarding the dongle switch: I have no idea what`s going wrong. What happens
when you put the dongle on the "problem" machine and start RayMan in the normal
way?
Michael
Thanks for your response

Rayshell starts, when I do file open a box appears with the 1005 out of memory
message . This message mentions something about not enough memory for an image
buffer or image temp file. If the exact wording of the message would help I
will find out. So I tried Rayman not rayshell and it also returned out of
memory. This is on a 486/66 with 32mb ram and lots of disk space.
thanks

Has the problem machine exact the same configuration than the other (no
problem) machine (memory manager)? How much conventional memory do they have?
Do you use VMM? How much memory does the VMM use?
Michael
<<Has the problem machine exact the same configuration than the other (no

Im using Dos Memaker on both. The problem machine shows 590kb conventional
memory. I have a line set dos4gvm=d:\rayman\rayman.vmc in the autoexec.bat. In
rayman.vmc the virtualsize=65536000.
The situation is different than in my previous message and, to me , more
mystifying. I can now enter rayshell and render files except that on four out
of eight tests it just stopped rendering and either locks up, requiring a reset
or gets horozontal lines across the top of the screen and locks up requiring a
reset. The files that will render are simple ones like pencil.3ds; the ones that
wont run are more complex like marbvase.3ds and alessi.3ds. Once it locked up
on trying to exit after a succeful render. The partial renders looked fine up
until the problem. I have used this machine for 3ds and now as a slave with no
problems. These problems showed up after making a few test renders , a process
I did not go through on the non problem machine ( which actually has less
conventional memory ). I need to run rayman on the machine thats having
problems because testing ray tracing is time consuming enough that I cant
afford to run it on my main 3ds machine. I have run memmaker again-same
problem-locks after the first 1/4 of the render.
I am unable to run rayman on either machine when networked ( Lantastic ) .On
trying to open a file I get " Problem 1005 out of memory, for immediate
storage…(function Ed Halloc()). How much conventional memory does rayman
require? This is a secondary problem that I would only be concerned about if
the above problem were solved.
Thanks
Ed
Please make sure that your VMM line includes the monkey sign:
SET DOS4GVM=@RAYMAN.VMC
RayMan looks in the RAYMAN directory for the RAYMAN.VMC file.
With 16 MB of RAM you won`t need the VMM to render ALESSI.3DS. So please try
out to render ALESSI.3DS without VMM. If this works your problem is the VMM.
And this is probably the setting of the VMM env. variable.
RayMan doesn`t need more conventional memory than 500kb.
If you want to run RayMan in a Peer to Peer network please think about the
following:
RayMan has to be in one directory (the Server). Every machine must have
read/write access to this directory with the SAME letter. The temp. file must
be on different drives/directorys for each machine.
If this hints doesn`t work please tell me…

Hello Michael
Something in my boot files was causing rayman to be unable to access ram.
Without vmm Rayshell wouldnt run (no memory message ) and with vmm the
rendering of alessi paged to disk constantly until lock up.
I changed my boot files to a minimum configuration and so far ( I will have to
do more testing ) Rayman seems to be working fine.
I guess I will add things one at a time to try to find the offending line in
the boot files.
BTW using @ with the vmc file line is not documented.
Thanks for your help
ED
Hi Edward!
Much look with the "problem causing line"! If you use EMM386 or a old version
of HIMEM.SYS (earlier than DOS 5.0) this can cause problems.
>>BTW using @ with the vmc file line is not documented.
OH SH…! You`re right. I took a look at the manual and I didn`t saw
the sign. We`ll solve this problem and we`ll send a letter to all
american RayMan user to help them…
Hello michael
I think Im all straightened out. Ive got it going on the network and im getting
productive. I will upload an image when I get something good.
Thanks
