#Matlibs, Mem, Cursor.

Ted,
>>The .mli files only point to the .tga files and don't really contain the
info.
How do they know where to point? Sometimes the materials and maps are on one
drive, and sometimes on another. Just curious.
>>If you have windows caching programs like smartdrv, rem
them out of the autoexec/config files and reboot before you start 3DS.
I did what you said, and it helped alot. What would windows caching programs
have to do with 3DS when I run it strictly from DOS? Or is windows that scary?
In the 3D Lofter, my cursur moves very delayed in any current or
active view. Do you know why?

Tim,
I'm making an assumption of the part of pointing in the .mli files, so I don't
know any details. It may use something like the map paths statement. There is
no way the files can be compressed that small, however.
Smartdrv.exe doesn't do anything in 3DS, but the amount of memory is excluded
for use by anything else.
A jumpy mouse can be a sign of low memory, how much conventional ram
do you have when you type mem from the C:> prompt? I've heard of
problems with v9.0 of the microsoft mouse drivers, too. Funny it only
jumps in the lofter, though. Does it always jump, or just once in a
while?
Have fun

Ted,

I have 655360 bytes of conventional RAM.

It ALWAYS jumps in any active viewport, (except the shape VP) of the 3D Lofter
ONLY. Yes, that's peculiar alright. I seem to have a real nack for running
into unusual problems. Do you think there could be a glitch in the software?
In the Materials editor, is it possible to create a new material from one that
already exists, and save it with another name so that both materials in that
library can be used? I don't see a "SAVE MATERIAL" command, and giving the
"current material" a new name just wipes out he original material. I can save
a library, but the original material will change to the new material in that
library. So far, the documentation, as well as "Inside 3D Studio" have been
unable to clarify this for me. Am I overlooking something?
Take care,
Tim

Yes, simply PUT the material in the library. You can just hit the "P" key for
this, and give it any name you want. Have you done all of the tutorials? I'm
almost certain this is covered (although possibly in a round-about way)

I guess I was Putting to scene and getting the message that the material didn't
exist. I'll use <P> from now on. Thanks.

Oh, no Tim, that's not possible!<VBFG> I have heard of some problems with
Microsoft 9.0 mouse drivers, but I don't know what the symptoms are. You
certainly have plenty of ram (are you sure the mouse driver is loaded?<G>). Try
playing with the mouse speed settings in 3DS or the ballistics adjustments in
the driver software.
You can copy materials by dragging and dropping the sample sphere to another
window, then renaming it there, as well as Bob W's suggestion.

Thanks, I was putting to scene and getting the message that the new material
name didn't exist. Your dragging method works well too. I'll use <P> from now
on.
