#Freelance Hacks

Thanks for sharing that. The only problem I had with your message is that
you really should have put it as a new subject. (We're straying a bit too
far, people. It's not all that difficult to create a new subject).
Anyway, seeing stuff like that steams me beyond all end. And it's not
uncommon.
Seems like any yo-yo who can afford a laser printer (or at least PageMaker
or Ventura or XPress) is automatically a "freelance designer". In the
olden days, (ie, before DTPFORUM), Kathleen Tinkel, John Tomeny, Dave
Saunders, myself, and a host of others had a mutual "Letting it all out" on
this topic in the Aldus Forum. I don't know if it solved anything, but it
was therapeutic.
In addition to charging your client, I would also charge the designer/hack
for consultation.

As a new "freelance hack" I would be very interested in hearing from all of
you professionals exactly what we can do to make your (and of course our)
job easier. My brother is actually the designer (hack) and he has 15 years
experience in newpaper design and he has done the layout and design of both
a book and a magazine using Xpress so we are somewhat experienced hacks.
As entertaining as I have found it to listen to you all bitch and moan,
<grin> how about teaching us young whipper snappers a thing or two? Or
would that spoil all the fun? <grin>

If your brother has 15 years design experience, he's no hack. I was
referring to those people who "heard you could make some money in DTP."

Tom,
Just trying to stir things up a bit. While it is true that we have design
experience, we are new to working with outside prepress (is that what we
call you?), and could use some instruction from the experienced people who
are commenting here. We had few problems working with the service bureau
in getting the book typeset, but apparently some freelancers cause
unnecessary problems, and I'm sure we all (hacks and pros) would like to
avoid that. So elucidate.

I think its best to work with specific questions you have. Fire away!
