#97267- #Ideal PC for 3DS Rel.3 Message #97445
Nik: The tradeshow configuration was put together by Raymond Jones at Micron. Micron uses 3DS in their art department, and is a registered hardware developer. In any case, the tradeshow computers are specifically configured for 3DS. FWIW, when you order a Micron, ask for the Platinum configuration, and you get…

#96869 3DS for Sale Message #97434
I would be willing to part with my 3D Studio Release 3 software if the price is decent. I think it's a great product, but I don't have time to use it. I'm too busy with Windows NT and such stuff. It has all the original stuff (ie: dongle, books,…
John, Thank you for the answer. I knew it wasn't very obscure, but like any self-taught medium, if you've never encountered the challenge in the initial learning curve, it's amazing how many procedures are available that you never even know were in existence. Many thanks, Michael

I find that 1.8 is plenty black so maybe its your monitor. Mine has SMPTE Type C phospors and 720 lines or resolution. Keying is another story. I use a matte for the key signal. Blacks are legal so it doesn't seem to be a problem. I use the PAR…
#97417 #AMI BIOS & CACHE? Message #97425
From: John Ellis Autodesk Software Forum · OpSys/Networks April 16, 1994 9:21 AM
David, A standard "read" with "write" enabled, reads and writes to the disk automatically, the cache being a buffer. This is the default for SMARTDRV for DOS ver 5.0. With DOS 6 this can be enabled with the /F switch which is also the default. A "delayed write" can be…

Thanks for the clarification! The Book is outstanding! Just out of curiosity, who thought up and did the many fine examples in the book? I am reading the chapter on Perspective and was curious who did all those drawings and 3ds examples. Judy

#Render message Message #97418
Hi Gary, I was wondering about something (I do that sometimes). I've noticed when compositing in video post with 'no display', while the normal info is displaying in the render box ("loading image file", "compositing…" etc.) the last line on each frame is "displaying image" and the process takes about…

John, >> The problems I've had with SMARTDRV however have been with delayed writes as opposed to write only Sorry, but I'm a bit confused (and I hate being confused). Smartdrive will either cache data headed for the disk (which inherently means a delay before getting there), or it won't.…

David, I believe you! The problems I've had with SMARTDRV however have been with delayed writes as opposed to write only. I didn't mention it before but I use FAST cache and also have PC-CACHE and LAN Cache all of which I like better than SMARTDRV. FWIW. -JE
#97395 #PAR vs MAX Message #97415
From: John Ellis Autodesk Software Forum · OpSys/Networks April 16, 1994 2:49 AM
John, The way the MAX gets double the throughput is by dividing a frame into two fields, each field going to a seperate drive. I extrapolated from there. So that if you had four drives say, to maximize the throughput you'd have to split the fields again. Just a speculation,…

#97326- 3DStudio Message #97410
Very simply, Dianne, I'd reccommend a DEC Pentium ('cause of the Alpha capability) with *minimum* 64MB RAM, either a Matrox MGA or Diamond Viper card (depending on your pocketbook and resolution/color depth requirements), and the Personal Animation Recorder from Digital Processing Systems. There are, of course, other choices, but these…
#97386 AMI BIOS & CACHE? Message #97409
Jerry, With Smartdrv 5.0, just add the switches /x (to disable writeback cache), and /v (this will give you a readout telling you which drives are being cached and how – read and write). Windows runs like a dog without Smartdrive, or another software cache, so I keep it running,…

John, >> …and neither mention switches to disable it. I had smartdrive running with dos 5.0 for ages, without writeback cache. My previous message to you explains how to disable it (it WAS in the gateway dos manual). … guess it doesn't matter with the new one out though. David
You can rotate in less than 1 degree with the Key Info dialog's controls, and you can use Mark's PXP to rotate via explicit keyboard input as well. No hidden 3ds.set values. – G

#97358 #PAR vs MAX Message #97395
I'm not sure I understand why one would have one image scattered over several drives. I would think the array software/hardware would distribute frames (not "a" frame) in a certain pattern over the several drive array so they could be streamed back nice and interleaved-like, but I really don't know…
