Bill, Good luck. There is precious little commercial software available for the Pro these days, since it was officially "retired" 2, maybe 3 years ago. You should resurrect your DECUS membership. All (or the vast majority) of Digital's software for the Pro was contributed to the DECUS library in the…

About six years ago I was a system operator on a PDP-11/24. It was a constant struggle keeping it up and running with sixteen terminals and a tempramental Mostek memory board (remember when 124K seemed like alot). I had the distinct displeasure of watching that machine die. It's terminals were…

600,000 PDP-11 sold, huh? Well, that is certainly a rexpectable number of computers, but obviously not at the level of `PC' style gadgets. I had privately told myself there were probably less than half-million. Hmmm, recalling the old Volvo ads, I wonder how many of'em are still running? Thanks, Jerry.

Yes, there is a way to add battery backup to memory for the LSI-11. The pins are there on the backplane connection. You'd have to look in one of the old DEC Microcomputer Handbooks for the specifics about which pins and how to use 'em, though. -Bill

Well, here's DEC's PDP-11 "surprise": Digital has announced the 11/93 and 11/94, Q-bus and UNIBUS (respectively) high-end systems in the PDP-11 family. They are said to perform 40% faster than the 11/83 and 11/84 which they replace. Pricing appears to be identical to corresponding 11/8x systems: a System Building Block…

I don't think Martin's numbers are correct any more on PDP-11s vs. PCs. DEC doesn't provide numbers, but the latest estimates I saw (a year or so ago) put PDP-11s in the hundreds of thousands (500K I believe) while PCs are clearly in the millions now. I think IBM alone…
