I doubt very much that Ken Olsen, who is the only person who could be construed as "Head of DEC", either (a) spoke at DEXPO, or (b) said "PDP is DEAD". Especially since the PDP-11/93 and 11/94 were just introduced, and PDP-11 C was introduced within the past year… -Bill

the 990 is a little larger (4-6 inches i think) than an 890. I liked the 990s myself. It depends on which board you are using to drive the 890. Some boards would support both systems (TC-13) while some support up to 890 but not the 990 (TC-12).
At DEXPO in New York over a year ago, Head of DEC said "PDP is DEAD".

Typically, (unless you are doing hardware/opsys stuff) all PDP programming is alike (based on the opsys, of course).
What do you need done on the PDP? I know several people.

P.S.: In addition to information on the display, it would be necessary to know the operating system you're using, since software to make use of the light pen will be operating system specific and the PDP-11 supports a dozen or more different operating systems.
Larry, A light pen is used with a graphic display of some kind. A PDP-11/53 is a general-purpose computer, to which a variety of types of displays can be attached. Most displays attached to PDP-11s in the real world are text-only, and there are no light pens to accompany these.…

I just completed an Operating Systems design course, where we used the XINU O/S on a microvax-LSI/11 setup. (Textbook by Douglas Comer.) A spec on the UNIBUS exists, but I don't think it's in anything that's currently published. There used to be something called (approx.) the UNIBUS Interfacing Handbook which contained chapter and verse about that bus, but it's been out of print for quite some time now. -Bill

Yes, there is a way to add battery backup to memory for the LSI-11. The pins are there on the backplane connection. You'd have to look in one of the old DEC Microcomputer Handbooks for the specifics about which pins and how to use 'em, though. -Bill
