Thanks again Ed. Doug
Thanks Scott, What did you pay for the Ideki 21", if you don't mind my asking? Doug
Martin, Thanks for the information. I realize that my questions may sound strange, but from someone who is generally stuck with 14-15" monitors, 17" is pretty good, and the price jump from 17 to 21 is usually over $1000. I do believe that bigger is "always" better, I just wasn't…
Thanks Ed. I really appreciate you help. Do you have any idea as to how much these drives run (appx)? Doug
Thanks so much for the information. That is the stuff I wanted to hear! Could you tell me if or why the 21" monitor is worth the extra money over the 17"? Also, having not had any experience with vram, could you tell me how much of an advantage it…
Help w/machine purchase.
Message #161331
Hi, I asked this question last week, but only got one response. I was hoping that a few more of the experienced users or those who have made recent purchases might chime in. I would really appreciate your hints and advice. I am looking to buy a machine to be…
Great! Thanks for the input Jonas. I use SCSI at work, and I agree that the flexibility is great. Doug
#machine recommendations?
Message #160540
Hi Everyone, I am looking to buy a machine to be my primary "workhorse" at home. I currently am using a Gateway 486/25 at home, and have access to several pentium 90's w/32megs+ at work. I would love to hear everyones suggestions for this machine. I would like to keep…
Thanks Matt. Doug
Thanks Scott. Doug
THanks Brent, I will look into their products. Doug
#Translate 3ds to obj
Message #150694
I am looking for a translation routine to convert 3D Studio asc (or even better, 3ds) files to Wavefront obj file types (as well as obj to asc). I have a routine that works very well for translating the meshes but excludes the u and v values for texture mapping…
Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of acad, but that would work well to. I guess I need to find someone good with writing lisp routines. Doug
Steppd contours w/scrpt?
Message #148962
Does anyone know of a way to make quick stepped contours in 3ds or acad? Perhaps w/ a 3ds script? I am not familiar w/ what is possible with scripting, so if someone thinks it may be possible, would you mind letting me know? Specifically, I would like to be…
Thanks John, We are currently playing with a program called TerraModel, which is pretty extensive, but rather combersome for smaller projects. I appreciate your suggestions, as we are always looking for "a better way". Doug
Vibrant support 928Movie
Message #148419
Nik, is there any word on support for the Videologic 928Movie card for 3ds? We have just bought this card, and cannot get any true-color modes. Please say there is someting I can download?? TIA Doug
Thanks Martin. I will have to experiment before I will have any questions about the technique. I am a GRA at Georgia Tech, and we are working on the entire city of Atlanta. The terrain and roads are really our weakest link. Thanks for your suggestion.I will definately work on…
Thanks a lot John. I will have to experiment before I will have any questions about the technique. We at Georgia Tech School of Architecture are desperate to have a good way to use topography with our architectural models and sites, and putting in the roads has been a lot…
Martin, PMFJI, but I would really like it if you could be more specific about your solution, as you generously suggested. Also, about a year ago, we tried to buy Drape, but were told that it was not going to be produced until later due to programming problems. Do you…
support for 928Movie VL
Message #147766
Chuck, I was wondering if there were any lans to support the VideoLogic 928Movie Board. I really need a better solution, as the chip s3 928, though supported, is not generic, and the full color selections will not work. Also, the vesa support in the Vibrant driver for release 4…
#RazorPro?
Message #146468
Can anyone tell me where I can find information on RazorPro? Specifically as a video editing tool for use with PAR? Doug
Thanks a lot Bob, I'll pass this on to my advisor. He is on the verge of purchasing the PAR, but wants to make sure that others using it are satisfied and that it will be worth the expense. Doug
Thanks Brendan, I'll pass your number to my advisor and maybe we'll have some questions for you. Right now, he is on the verge of purchasing thePAR, but wants to know if people are happy with it, etc. Doug
#PAR & RazorPro-Opinions?
Message #146253
Hi, Could anyone out there give me their opinions on PAR and RazorPro, for use with 3DS and possibly I have heard 60fps video capture? I am sorry if others have discussed this topic to death, I have just been instructed to look into this setup, so any advice and/or…
Ken, There have been numerous requests for what we have of the model already. Let me forward this message to our "advisor" and get back to you on Tuesday or Wednesday. Doug
Yes Ted, it has been something of an uphill battle, but I do believe we are on the right track. Thanks for the encouragement. Doug
Phil, I would say the real emphasis would be how many students to use 3ds for studio, though only 4-6 students did use 3ds during the course of their studio. Most professor were open to it, but you really had to prove its value over conventional means. Actually, as more…

#Architectural Animation?
Message #134564
As a graduate student at Georgia Tech in Architecture, I would say I probably have a good feel for what is going on in Architectural education here. When I began working on the extended degree program 3 years ago, there were 2 ACAD courses offered (1 required) for students in…
Spell check…..People not peaople (BG-DR):)
Thanks Nik, Yes, the 5434 chipset selection works. Doug
Nik, Could you tell me if the Vibrant drivers 1.0.5 support the Diamond Speedstar 64 card? I have the ISA version, and the 1.0.4 drivers supported the Cirrus Logic 5434 chipset, but not the specific card. If so, please let me know, if not, please add this card to your…
Rafael, I have passed on your name and message to a few professors, and they said they will get back to me as soon as possible. I wll be gone for a couple of weeks, but will try to get some info to you when I return after October 5th.…
Rafael, I would be happy to pass on some info about the visualization studio, but I need to ask the 2 professors that are spear-heading the project to give me some more info. I am a graduate student at Georgia Tech just beginning work on my thesis. In the past…
Yep. I am a grad student at Georgia Tech School of Architecture, and have been using 3DS heavily for the last year. I also work for the architecture schools computer department, and there are many students and faculty learning and using 3DS for their work. This year, 2 faculty members…
Thank you so much for letting me know about the new drivers. I hope Diamond can supply you with a card for your developers. I am looking forward to the 1.0.4 drivers. Doug
OK, thanks for your help. Doug
Chuck, Will the 1.0.4 drivers be released as beta drivers on your BBS, or will we just have to wait until Autodesk finishes their testing? Thanks for your quick response. Doug
How soon for those drivers? (1.0.4 and/or support for the Speedstar 64) Doug
Chris, You wouldn't happen to have the VIBRANT BBS number handy would you? I would like to check there as well. Doug
Thanks Chuck. Maybe I will hang on to the card. Doug
Chuck, I have tried the generic Cirrus entries…none worked except at 640x480x16 colors, and that wouldn't work for the materials editor. The vesa driver was the only one that worked well enough to be slightly useable, but not really satisfactory for long term use. I would be interested to know…
speedstar64 ISA support
Message #112886
Hi Chuck, I have just installed the speedstar 64 ISA w/2megs video board and it seems that the vibrant drivers do not currently support this board. I am able to use the VESA compatable driver, but I am not able to get anything higher than 256 color (I should be…
Thanks. Doug
Thanks Chuck, When the card comes in, I'll give it a try. Doug
Thanks for the reply Chuck. I am going to mail you the .txt file press release for the board so maybe you can direct me further. Would the chipset be the "Cirrus Logic CL-GD5434 graphics controller"? Doug
Thanks for the response. I am not sure if the Stealth 64 has the same chipset as the Speedstar 64 I was referring to. I am trying to find out now. Thanks again. Doug
Speedstar 64 support.
Message #110298
Does anyone know if 3D studio has built in support (vibrant drivers) for the speedstar 64 video card w/2megs dram? Also, does anyone have any experience with this card? I have ordered it as an upgrade to my Tseng4000 based card, and was hoping it will be a good deal…
Oh! I also thaink we are running 6.2, so I'll check on the 6.3 upgrade. Thanks Doug
Kenny, The card was an ATI, not a diamiond. I guess there are no drivers for its support.
I'm at home now, but I think it is a diamond card (I don't remember which), but it was not listed in the install, and so we had to stick with the 256 vga driver. I'll find out which card and pass it on, maybe you can suggest a different…
