Kyle, I have access to resonably priced hardware such as dual Pentiums, DEC Alphas, and Sun Sparcs. OpenGL cards, too. Drop me a note what your interested in.
John, Liked you idea about the Dolby/Surround. Would put some sound engineers out of business… Turtle Beach is writing the NT drivers as we speak so they should be out soon. There is an article out this month in Digital Video about sound editors and sound sync you might want…
Tim, I haven't heard the Razor needs the TBC for the composition. I'll check. I believe that Razor takes a snapshot of the ANI PAR files to work with, like Premiere does but I don't know. It works is all I know. I have not had any probs with sound…
Thanks Martin, And yes I know about the Hoops thing but I've got Autocad also. The OpenGL cards should improve that quite a bit, at least the card vendors say they will. Just a thought, what will be the optimum video hardware for Hoops? I have the Omnicorp info and…
Supposedly, not all apps need to be recompiled. I don't know. Just the ones I've run are ok. Thanks.
Thanks for the tip. I know Gary said they were going to support Intel only to start. Come on Alpha! Mark
Dave, I would like to see the electric effect too, when you get a chance. Thanx Mark
Stupid me! I forgot about the SGI renderer with 3DS. Of course… Also I think your probably the most knowledgeable person about both the hardware and software that I've talked to here. Thanks for the input! Meanwhile, onward with the hunt. I'll get some specs on the new Alpha board…
John, I'm using a Turtle Beach Monterey. It has the best audio specs. AWE 32 drops off somewhat. I'm recording all of my audio, music, etc. to the hard drive first, then mixing it in Razor or Wave and shooting it back out to tape. Sound really good.
Talk to Martin Foster of Metrolight. I'm pretty good when it comes to hardware but he puts me to shame! Right now everything I want to use with NT is already out there. MS Word, Excel, and a few others. I loaded NT on my P100 at the office and…
Yes you can run two cards for four input channels! The windows drivers take a dedicated chunk of memory so you can install two different cards and two drivers. Call TB and talk to them. What I've been doing is recording individual tracks onto the hard disk, then mixing them…
No Prob! Ok, WB right now won't run in 24 bit with my ATI card, a Pro Turbo (Mach 64). Digimation is looking at the problem. They say they have that card and it runs fine for them. Its great in 16 bit and the TGA output files are 24…
John, The only reason I would switch to the Diamond is because of Premiere. It won't run with the ATI card. Adobe knows it, ATI knows it, and they're working on it… The reviews say the Stealth Video is good. Opinion?
Super! But get out of that room once in a while! Bye!
Silly Boy! I know what you're doing, having fun and making a living doing animation. A difficult combination as I understand. I read the Special Effects book. Nice job! No, what I'm asking is what type of server and network architecture are you running for the rendering. The SGI's run…
Quad DEC Alpha…I feel the need for speeeeeeed……
Charles, I use a 4meg ATI Pro Turbo and its fine, but I think I would get a 4meg Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM or the Diamond Viper Video VRAM card. They both have acceleration to 30fps for AVI files. The ATI doesn't. Just make sure its 4meg so you…
Get the ropes and chains!
Tim, Razor has drivers for the PAR that makes (for right now) the best editing program for the PAR. Premiere is clumsy and I will not use it with the PAR right now even though the filters and transitions are better. I have it and its on the shelf. The…
David, I use other stuff too. I just made a separate boot disk for 3DS. Strange, I hadn't heard about the performance increase.
Ha! Did you get any 3DS meshes with to render? The program has some samples on the disk.
Yeah, with 8 chip the unit is around 20K. 2 chip ain't bad, less than 6. I was think of setting up a 2 chip Alpha as a model machine with either 2 four chip boxes or 1 eight chip box as a render server. What are you doing? I…
Danny, Turtle Beach is writing the drivers for NT as we speak. The card is around $350 mail order. The current 16-bit drivers are not SB compatible buts thats only an issue for DOS applications like the games. Myst and other windows applications run fine. A lot of the games…
I did a little eval of both physics routines and bought Key Factory. MUCH MORE CONTROL. I'm real happy with it.
Yeah, I'm an IPAS junkie. About the only thing I dont have is Meshpaint. I going to stop getting anything for R4 and wait for MAX now. Found a new motherboard though…IT WILL TAKE UP TO 8 DEC ALPHA 275Mhz PROCESSORS! WOW!
Yes I do, It helps with screen redraws only. Not rendering. But when you get complex scenes, its the only answer.
Matthew, Why are you running QEMM? The Phar-Lap extender does a really good job. I don't use any mem manager on my machines and I get all the mem to use for 3DS. I have the ATI card too and have never had a prob, even with the Vibrant Mach…
Hi there, This month's Planet Studio magazine says the there will be upgrades paths for almost all of the R4 IPAS routines. So I would say go ahead and get them. The R4 routines will not work with MAX. Who would want them? They're 16-bit and MAX will be 32-bit!…
Kevin, What's the explode IPAS? I've been doing the Magic/LenzFX/Glow thing a la Planet Studio. I going to upgrade to the LenzFX2 routines shortly. I would love have something like the routines I saw on Monday Night Football. I'm sure that was done with Alias and Renderman though. Thanks.
Kevin, Are you running under any version of windows? I didn't understand the DOS window part. Did you reconfig the "3ds vibcfg"? Should be ATI Mach 64 for all displays. Since you have 2M, try 640×480 @ 16.7 mill. colors. And, no, there isn't any difference in the cards except…
If you have page faults…its RAM! as in not enough. The Siggraph tapes are available from Autodesk. There is a note in the 3dS section about how to get a 95 tape. I have the 94 tape. If you can't get one, drop me a note and I'll send you…
I think that you will find that the tapes cover a broad range of areas including the architectural side. And, no, I won't part with them! They're too useful! Bye!
OK! I'm drooling for samples. Talk to you soon.
Sure! What you want to do is just run antivesa.com. What I did was copy all three files, antivesa.com, .asm,.txt, to the 3ds4 sub directory. Then just do: CD\3DS4 ANTIVESA 3DS4 and thats it! I made a boot disk that just starts dos, assigns a path, cd\3ds4, runs antivesa, and…
Hi Y'all! I'd be interested in seeing samples of the three AXPs. The TNT explosion is sorely needed. Thanks for the info and keep me informed. Bye!
Thanks Aleksey. Glad you're getting a chance to see the USA. Got any Sticky samples yet? Bye!
The Vibrant driver is under the 3D Studio library and the Antivesa is under the hardware lib. Have fun!

James, You've got the right computer, just no memory. I run 32mb and 64mb in my PCs and thats still is not enough (its not, I got World Builder and I gotta go to 128mb so that it doesn't use vitual mem). You need to have 16 megs as a…
Jerome, Recording take the standard time of CD-ROM's: single speed is 150k/sec, double speed 300k/sec, quad speed 600k/sec and so forth. The data is "fixed-up", ordered and collated by the computer before its recorded to maintain a steady stream of data to the write buffer, thats the fast part. The…
Matthew, If you have the ATI card, there are some new drivers in the ATI forum. Hope Antivesa helps, its been a winner. Bye….
Oh, by the way, there some new ATI drivers in the ATI forum. As a side note to all of this, I bought ATI's for all the high-end PC's in the office because at the time they were the best thing. Now it appears Diamond has retaken the with the…
Thanks Greg!
Try hitting the auctions. I got a Mitusubishi FS21 21" monitor for $425. Does 1280×1024 at 76 Hz no prob. Bye!
Greg, What is the IPAS from Eric Peterson for explosions? I've been using Magic, LenzFX, and Glow a la the Planet Studio article. Thanks.
Jerome, Their fine with audio, although you cannot record directly from an audio cd to the Pinnacle. What I do is record the audio track from the CD to the hard disk as a wav file, then edit them and record them back to the Pinnacle. To maintain the same…

Hi, I've got the Pinnacle 1000 CD recorder and it works perfect. If your running an Adaptec 2940 PCI card and have it connected externally, make sure you do Ctrl-A after boot and at the Adaptec banner to enter the SCSI control section. Make sure that external termination is off…
Hey Will, The Vibrant drivers work perfect, I have the same card. Don't fool with the ATI drivers, the're junk. I get 1280X1024, 16.7 mil colors from the ATI card rock steady, no flicker on a Mitsubishi 21" monitor. Download the new Vibrant drivers and the Antivesa routine. Select either…
OK, Thanks Kyle, I'll go ahead and get MP and try it. The guide lines will be worth it.
