From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 24, 1992 3:02 PM
Rog, Everything looks great! I am amazed at the speed at which you are able to make this stuff!! Hopefully the client will allow us to upload some samples of the finished products here… Thanks again! -Mike.
#cutting plane Message #23750
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 24, 1992 3:01 PM
Thanks Gary, I did check it out; it does what it says, but I need the objects to be cut *at the projection plane*, that is, wherever the objects crosses the plane, the face should be cut. This is the way Ashade performs this function. It appears that the current…
Ah, I am not convinced that 3DS will *never* be able to do ray tracing. I think that at some point IPAS and some nifty programmer will be able to implement selective object ray tracing. Guess I've got to just hang out for awhile and wait for it to happen……
Gary, I've a big wishlist item…. I stopped by the Alias booth at SIGGraph. Their PC modeler has some *very* powerful `dynamic editing features' we found when we were playing (the demo person didn't even realize this!). Here's what we did… Made a rectanle with a square and a circle…
#15602 NoteBook Pref's Message #15682
Barry, How is the screen and keyboard? How big is it? Does the keyboard have seperate cursor/page up/down w/out having to use function keys? How loarge is the screen. Cripes! How about if you can just give me a phone #? -Mike.
YOU had that feeling when finishing r2? Wow, I feel like I haven't hit ground since I got MY upgrade!!! -Mike.
Just one phrase you need to know to be a mechanic: `Manana, manana, manana, manana, ….' -Mike.
#15277- #Buenos tardes, amigos. Message #15423
Gary, Hey, Glad to hear you had a good time! -Much deserved- The vertigo you are experiencing must be trauma induced. You came back too soon? Or perhaps you looked at your machine too quickly? Hmm… could be lots of reasons. Just lay down, pretend you are back in the…
Martin, There is indeed a TURBO option. It's right up there, next to the exit icon, think there's any relationship? As far as I know it is an extra-cost option; they didn't send one to me & I assume it's because I didn't buy it. They say it speeds up…
NoteBook Pref's Message #15332
Does anybody here have any strong preferences for Windows compatible Notebook computers? I don't think we can afford color, but need a min. of 32 shades/gray, 4MB, 386/25, 60-80MB HD, etc. Thanks in advance for the input… -Mike.
#15246- Background Scaling Message #15301
I am not sure I do anymore, either… To do what you suggest means I end up with multiple images on the screen. Also, to do this means that I lose resolution in the background. I guess I am just looking for another work around for this problem. I am…
#15234- Background Scaling Message #15300
OH! Very good; man 3DS has soooooo many features! -Mike.
#15211- Background Scaling Message #15299
Kevin, No need to be sorry. I *did* do the tutorials, just a very long time ago before I really had time to use the product. Unfortunaly, I lost alot of that knowledge. I do NOT keep complaining about the same thing, Kevin. My complaints are all very logical and…
#21195 MSCDEX.EXE Message #21240
From: Michael Bahr CDROM Forum · DOS, Windows, OS/2 May 11, 1992 7:40 AM
Kevin, Thanks very much! I will download the file and look for the new version in a day or so… -Mike.
MSCDEX.EXE Message #21093
From: Michael Bahr CDROM Forum · DOS, Windows, OS/2 May 6, 1992 4:55 PM
I am having troubles getting all of my equipment working together when I have QEMM and a Targa+ and a network loaded. I wondering if there is a more current version of MSCDEX.EXE that would help; I currently have one dated 6/16/91. If there *is* a more current version, where…
#Mapping & Music Message #13804
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Wishlist April 29, 1992 9:07 AM
Wishlist! Wishlist! Wishlist! For 3DS 3.0, how about *thinking* about adding more control for map sizes. What I would really like to see in the materials editor is the ability to denote, in drawing units, the size a bitmap should be applied to an object. For instance, a brick map…
#13687 R2 Lost Drivers Message #13726
Roger, So, what is the phone number for Vibrant? I think I should look into using their drivers on my Artist ZX-1. Can you bring the number with you tonight? -Mike.
#12702 No ASG Architectural Message #12714
Yes, I know you're in Milwaukee. The user group? It was a *great* idea a year ago when Anil and I started it. But it took so much work, and only 3-5 people would show up each time. -what a pain- Wasn't there supposed to be a meeting last night,…
#12677 Targa+ / Qemm Message #12713
Kevin, Weird. I *have* been using B000-B3ff for the targa+ for a couple of weeks now. I thought the Targa+ may need 64k, but tried this space anyway and it has worked (except for the network that is). Perhaps this is why I cannot get my VESA drivers to work…
#12629 #Targa+ / Qemm Message #12666
Kevin, Well, I want it all! Actually, the software from which I want to print postscript files is PrintPro, which is part of Tempra Pro. It does not support dumping to disk; it wants to dump directly to a device . So, how can I do this? I have the…
#Targa+ / Qemm Message #12594
Kevin, I am having problems with getting my workstation on our network. Rest assured, all other problems I was having earlier seem to have been solved by Mylex; They got it right on the 5th motherboard! When I load the Targa+ driver when I also have Qemm loaded (6.0) I…
#12260 No ASG Architectural Message #12579
Ahm, I believe that the windows in ASG come from a number of sources. Windows can be defined in either CORE, Architectural, or using the PELLA library. I *have* the PELLA library but have never used it. In any case, I would bet that the entities are blocks or PLINES…
Yikes! Guess you've got a 1GB disk? -Mike.
Ohhhhhhhhh. Glad to know my spec's are still sitting squarely on my face. BTW, My workstation is now working about 100% (I still have problems with using 3 serial ports at once)! I rendered a couple of view of PCACITY at default settings, TARGA+ set at TMODE 12, and the…
Okay Okay Okay! I think I found a `fast one' you were trying to pull on us! PCACITY does not use Automatic reflection maps, does it? I rendered a street scene and all of the windows in show reflections at funny angles. Kind of like you would see them if…
#11865 3DS 2.0 shipping? Message #11876
Bob, Thanks for the answer. However, you're a little late: I uploaded this message quite a while ago. Anyway, I already got my copy! Yea! -Mike.
#11774 3DS / VESA Message #11875
Hmm.. Okay. Thanks. -Mike.
#11656- 3DS / VESA Message #11763
Hmmm, Well, if I were not to use standard VESA I would probably look into ADI drivers direct from Artist. So, I'll check with them first. Thanks for the tip! -Mike.
#11643- 3DS / VESA Message #11762
Dave, Well, I don't know that it is a problem with the Artist card. I was just giving all of the info I could, hoping somebody may know something. Besides, the card works *great* w/ Anipro via VESA. -Mike.
Training Message #11192
I would like to know of any/all multimedia training facilites near Milwaukee, Wi. I am specifically interested in who to contact about 3DS 2.0 training and Animator Pro training. Also, I would not be opposed to traveling further in order to get *the best* training available. Any suggestions? -Mike
#11123 3D Studio R2 LOCKED? Message #11168
I just now, after over three months, got my machine back in working order. We kept getting `Clock not ticking correctly' errors! On the fourth mother board replacement, someone at Mylex (whom we have not talked to earlier) said `Oh yea, we know how to fix that problem'. So Now…
#10715 3D Studio R2 LOCKED? Message #10939
It is rather frusterating to be forced to use something which you have no control over. Where would Autodesk be if they forced us to use one of three `acceptable' graphic cards? Hmmm… -Mike.
#10572- 3D Studio R2 LOCKED? Message #10684
But Mike, I seem to recall someone, somewhere, saying that the one thing that made AutoCAD so influential and attracted so many 3rd party developers, was the fact that there are *so many copies* out there. This same person went on to state that only 1/2 of the installed base…
#10575- #3D Studio R2 LOCKED? Message #10683
Right! I also am a legal user with concerns about the dongle. If you will recall, I was very active here about 2 months ago trying to trouble shoot my Mylex EISA rendering machine (It is almost working, Mylex admitted they knew there was a problem and have *just* sent…
EISA / Targa+ Message #8310
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 27, 1992 9:14 AM
Thought you might like an update on my EISA rendering machine. We finally found the problem (or so it appears, keep your fingers crossed); The TARGA+ card should NOT BE PUT IN A BUS-MASTERING EISA SLOT. That's it; no smoke, no mirrors, no cantations. The EISA config file does nothing…
#8265 Sound cards Message #8273
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 25, 1992 9:44 PM
So, I guess I wasn't so far off. Good to know my memory still works (parity okay, heh?). The DX7 has some really *hot* steel drum sounds. Strings were good, too. the DX7 was the keyboard that really seemed to change the way that popular music sounded. The fat analog…

From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 25, 1992 9:12 PM
Hmmm… Maybe it is *to* easy to impress you? Heh, Ha Ha! From the depths of my memory rise many a thing… -Mike.
#8162 #Sound cards Message #8213
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 24, 1992 2:07 PM
FM Synthesis is a specific type of sound generating technology, made popular in the DX line of Yamaha keyboards (DX7 is the *really* popular model) as can be heard all through the late 80's. Other types of Synthesis are Analog (what I grew up on, non-digital!), Phase Modulation (is this…
#8162 Sound cards Message #8212
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 24, 1992 2:06 PM
Greg, What exactly are you asking about if the CDPC card `support MIDI playback at anything beyond the FM-Synthesis technology…'? These two technologies are related (often used together for musical purposes) but *are* different. Midi, which stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a standard format which allows machines to…
#8164 Sound cards Message #8178

Thanks. Yea, sounds like a good idea. You listening Anil?
#8163 Sound cards Message #8177
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 23, 1992 12:25 PM
Yes, I know. I guess I was *really* concerned about a `maverick' card that may turn out to be a bad purchase decision. Remember the original Artist 1, VMI, etc.? -Mike.
#8076 #Sound cards Message #8125
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 22, 1992 8:39 AM
I like the idea of the SoundBlaster Pro Combo. Industry standard, fast, built in everything! The only problem is the relatively Synthesis capabilities (as I have read, not as I have heard). -Mike
#8060 #Sound cards Message #8124
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 22, 1992 8:37 AM
Arrgh! Not THE DREADED EQUALIZED SPEAKERS . The specs *may* go `way beyond' the MPC standard. Great. But, if this is the case, are there, will there be, will they every ship drivers that will take advantage of this? Who will support it? If it is available through only one…
#7547 EISA Message #7561
Yea, I am using the MYLEX EISA Configuration utility (CF.EXE). I *hope* that my trouble is being caused by not matching the jumper configuration with what this utility is set to. As soon as I get a free moment (3 weeks) I will give it a try! -Mike
#7471 #EISA Message #7539
groan, `be your own mechanic' is not what I wanted to do! We are still having problems with the Targa; the system works great w/out it, though. I have installed the ISA .cfg file that shipped with the board and got a message that said `the video adapter does not…

Kurta/Mouse/Com 3 Message #7479
From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 7, 1992 12:54 PM
How do I get my Kurta IS/ONE to emulate a MS-Mouse via K_isps when the tablet is hooked up through COM 3? -Mike.

From: Michael Bahr Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio December 15, 1991 1:37 PM
Ahhh, but John, What about those designers who would benefit from REAL TIME 3D INTERACTION during the design process. Industrial designers & Architects would be able to use interactive viewing to better understand the results of their efforts! Also, the temporal design elements are too often overlooked in Architectural design,…

Oh well, too bad. I just heard that their card is being re-designed to make it more competitive ($$). -Mike.
