Jeremy, > There are about 300 targas (752×480). I'd like to know how much swapfile/RAM one would require to load that many targas. Alec Jason
Jeremy, I think you might be right. I did increase my swap file to 100megs and I got further in the loading process before the "internal error." (I don't know if this matters but Windows only allows me to have a temporary swapfile because it tells me that I don't…
Nik, I don't know what Autodesk has planned for the future but I hope you'll pass along my strong wish for a 24 bit Animator Pro. Tell them to forget about Windows, just make AAP work in 24 bit and leave everything else as it is. Alec Jason
Will, The targas are compressed, about 800k each. I think I am running out of mem/swap file space. I increased the swap file to 100megs and I was able to load more .tga's before getting the "internal error." Have you ever loaded 4 to 5 hundred targas? (Has anyone?) Alec…
Karen, Yes, it is nice to know I'm not alone. What did you mean about wanting a player which is "truly MCI compliant" ? I don't actually know what a MCI driver does. A luta continua, Alec Jason
#AAS Wishes & Whines
Message #171859
Nik, Here are some of my comments on AAS: * Really need to be able to read .ani files off the PAR. Having to use .tga's causes some real logistical problems. * Need to be able to load a definable RANGE of .tga's (instead of having to rename the few…
#Targas Won't Load
Message #171800
Nik, I did try loading other .tga's and I have no problem with single .tga's. The .tga's which won't load into AAS were generated by 3DS and there are about 300 of them in the series. They are all compressed .tgas. When I try to open them, the process continues…
Nik, While trying to load a series of .tgas into AAS, I get the message Animation Error: An internal error occurred. I have tried many times to load these .tgas and it happens each time. Any ideas why? BTW, are you still accepting wish list items for AAS here? Thanks,…
> Okay, okay, okay. I'm willing to compromise. What if I change my name and my wife's and my daughter's to Meier! We'll just be one big(ger) happy family. And a soon to be rich family, as soon as I can get my little Mark working under _my_ tender management!…
David, Yes, I guess you have been lucky — or more accurately, I've been UNlucky. I know the PAR works for most people. And it does work for me, I just can trust it. I started out using 230 block limit and had the most problems. I've lately been using…
Mark, What a wonderful thing you've given us! For Free! (Its almost UnAmerican!) Of course, I did pay $30 for the original light.pxp. Can't help but wonder what you could make for us if you got _paid_ !!! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, Alec Jason P.S. Are you really from this planet?
Hey Gary, Does Autodesk know about Mark Meier? How come you guys haven't hired him? Seems like it might be a good idea to grab this guy before he creates and gives away more _free_ stuff — which is superior to much of what is being sold for big bucks!…
Jamie, Kind of you to take on interest in my problem. I'm using the Microp 2217a (1.7), version 1.5 of the software, Partest v1.12, Pardrv 1.7. I've got 32 megs ram in each computer. I'm using Lantastic 6.0. I'm pretty certain the problem has to do with the PAR and…
I've got a great source for VHS tapes of any length: American Video Warehouse 800-598-8273 They also sell SVHS tapes at low prices. Alec Jason
Mark, Thanks SO much for all your help! I do appreciate the info. Alec Jason
Ahhhh . . . James. > I do appreciate your interest and all the work you went through writing that message to me but most of the questions you asked me are irrelevant to the problem or were answered in my original message and I don't have the time to…
> You mean who pushed the boards into the socket and connected the hard disk cable? I did. James, this problem goes far beyond a problem with the "installation." Thanks, Alec Jason
Steve, There are quite a few of these vga-ntsc devices around now. It gets very confusing when you try to distinguish among them for features and capabilities and price! Thanks, Alec Jason
James, Yes, I tried the partest.exe. It has always shown that everything is okay. The problem is, I belive, deeper than the drive. Thanks, Alec Jason
Martin, I don't have timeout problems at all — just complete scrambles of all animations on the hard disk. Maybe the PAR should come in a refrigerated housing. Thanks for your tip! Alec Jason
James, Having a fan blow directly on the drive is certainly a good idea but it is not a solution to the continual PAR drive crash problem. I know. I've had a nine-inch fan blowing directly on the drive since I started using it and I've had continual crashes. Alec…
Mark! Hey, thanks so much for your good info. I imagine the unit you have only does eight bit color, right? Does it work okay in Windows? I'm gonna check with AI Tech. Sure is nice to get good information! Alec Jason
Hi Steve, Thanks for the info on IDEN . . . but $1,500 !!!!!. I'm looking more for something in the less than $300 range. Thanks, Alec Jason
#VGA to NTSC – Portable?
Message #168713
I'm looking for a cheap, basic quality VGA to NTSC converter that can be connected directly from a vga port to a TV set. (No software or internal cabling required.) Does anyone know of such a thing? Alec Jason
David, I have had to do manual outline tracing of 3DS images in Corel and it does work but is quite tedious. I'd be interested in your outline IPAS. But when? Alec Jason
#PAR Crash — Once Again
Message #168311
Dave, My PAR has _always_ been unreliable. I never know when the whole disk will go bad after doing a simple "delete frame" or an optimize. I've learned not to trust it and I back up all my animations before doing any work (a real pain.) But now I've got…
Ana, Gracias por la leccion de la historia cultural de Espana. Me fascinas! Que energia y poder intelectual tienes. Me parece que hay muchas piensamientos herviendo adentro de tu cabella y que el mundo de las artes graficas, bastante para muchos, te limita. Nececitas mas, no? Alec Jason P.S. No…

Martin, Very good stuff! You sure do explain things well. Hope to see more . . . Thanks, Alec Jason
Gregory, I don't know much about making water but I did see some amazing water used in an animation I saw on TV a few days ago regarding the rescue of several sailboats which had capsized during an extreme storm in the Pacific near New Zealand. I'm sorry I don't…
Bob, Please cancel my map icon problem. It was caused by my switching from a 256 color display to a 64k display. With the high color, the mapping is nearly invisible in some views. Thanks for your help and I hope I didn't waste too much of your time. Alec…
David, I think I've found the problem: I switched the vibcfg setup from 256 colors to 64K so I could try the Meshpaint demo. I didn't realize that doing so makes the mapping icon nearly invisible sometimes. That's the cause. Thanks much, Alec Jason
Hi Bob, I'm still working on the no-mapping icon problem. If you still have my original file, try this: 1. Make the Back viewport active. 2. Do "Surface/Mapping/Adjust/Find" When I do this, the mapping icon does not appear. I can, however, find it using an the "acquire" method but I…
Good info, John! If I were going to buy NT, which is preferable, the "server" or the "workstation" version of NT? Can you still run Lantastic on NT? With either NT version or only the server version? Thanks, Alec Jason
> Yeah, Ted. It sure does. Thanks, Alec Jason
> Yes, quite a bit better, I think. Alec Jason
David, > I'm working on it. Thanks, Alec Jason
> Well, I've been out of town for a week and I'm involved in legal action against the "C/NET" show which included a misleading interview with me along with their fraudulent Simpson Homicide animation. The "C/NET" people are real slimeballs: A new hybrid: TV's Techno-National Inquirer. Alec Jason
> Kevin, There is some physical evidence which supports the theory that Goldman was attacked after Nicole Simpson: Goldman's shoe soles had Nicole's blood tissue in them indicating that she was attacked before him. The problem with the bogus Failure Analysis animation is that it included some reasonable conclusions along…
#Garbage Forensic Anim.
Message #164825
This is a statment which I distributed to several media and professional groups: As a professional forensic crime scene reconstructionist and forensic animator I want to comment on the Simpson/Goldman homicide animation produced by the TV show C/Net and the engineering firm Failure Analysis, Inc and recently shown on several…

Dave, What is the PAR "AV upgrade" I just read about? Alec Jason
Brian, Don't you think it is a bit rude to continue to dump your negative views of 3DS here in this 3DS forum? This is a support forum is for users of 3DS. There are many programs I don't like and don't use but I don't think it is right…
#No Map Icon
Message #162705
Hi Bob, I can't figure this out: I've got a project file which will not show the mapping icon no matter what I do. Other files work fine but with this one the mapping icon will not appear. I've tried, Surface, Mapping, Adjust, Find. I'll get the "Rescale map icon…
Hi Gayle, PMJI — last week I went to the new Monet exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. This is a collection of Claude's later work (>1900) mostly of scenes from his garden at Giverny. This was the period during which his eyesight had deteriorated _and_ he…
Lee, The OJ Simpson animation shown on the C/NET show was, I believe, created on SGI/Wavefront system. It was, by the way, an irresponsible load of self-promotion by the company which produced it. While claiming to be "scientific," it is not. The actions depicted are not based on fact but…
I would appreciate an answer to my questions (in message #161207) I have the readme file you mentioned but it does not contain answers to my questions. Alec Jason
Thanks Mike, The difference between the "c" and "d" upgrades is very confusing as the readme file refers to it as "c" while it is actually "d". I changed the output drive and the preview works now. Alec Jason
