Looking in the libs, you probably want aaplhi.zip from lib 7, and fax748.txt from lib 19. fax748 talks about the inclusion of players on distribution diskettes. LAM
Place a message describing what you are selling in the Take 5/Want Ads section. There is no charge for posting the message. Only "requirement" is that you don't state the price in the message. Ask people to respond to you via private e-mail for more details. That's it! LAM
Yeah. I was going to compliment him on his nice recovery, but he probably would have taken it the wrong way . LAM
Agreed. I wasn't sure whether he wanted to run under WFW just for the networking capability, or whether he was actually running windows apps. LAM
Is your swap file going to the same disk as your image files? Usually, your swap disk is the disk where your 3ds.exe file is. You change the swap disk by running cfig386, which is documented in the 3ds Installation Guide. Just make sure you don't set your swap disk…
Unless your computer has about 512 meg RAM (for this project you are talking about), the swap file is created to "extend" your memory. 3ds puts in a request for memory, PharLap tries to allocate it in real memory and in swap space, runs out of disk space, and returns…
I don't have a Stylus . I was out looking at the different printers, decided on the stylus (after 20 minutes of the salesman giving me his pitch), and was ready to put the credit card in his hands. He then looked in his computer and found the last one…
OK. The point I was also trying to make, abeit poorly, is that there is no such thing as a "NT Boot Floppy". If you can't boot off of the hard disk, (as far as I know) you're fried. LAM
This message usually shows up when you have run out of disk space, and your image buffer memory space cannot be allocated. Since your final output file is about 220 megs, I hope you have plenty of disk space available! LAM
Do you need to run 3ds under windows? I have my home setup as an old 386/20 running WFW and acting as network server. The other two computers have a boot option to either start windows or to stay in dos. If they stay in dos, they attach the drives…
Just FYI, Epson is coming out with 2 new Color Stylus printers, and discontinuing the current model. New models were suppose to be out at the end of last month, but I haven't seen them yet. LAM
Just remember that you need to turn the VGA boot option back on any time you mess with a new video card or with new video drivers. It would be a real pain to have to do a full reinstall just because your screen has turned to giberish. LAM
===== I hope your senior year (when you get to it) is as much fun as mine was. The trick is to make the first three REALLY count! ===== ??? Are you saying to make your first 3 times as a senior count? Count for what? Babe hunting? Seems like…
Here is a previous message from Gus J Grubba: ===== This is a nature of C++. Without going into much explanation, function names in C++ are "mangled" in order to differentiate between similar named functions in different classes. Because these names are exported [by the linker] you must use a…
I had set up a separate directory structure for my background session of 3ds. I still pointed map-path wise to the original directories. You may want to try this as then the flic temporary files will be in separate directories for the two sessions. Just remember that 3ds was never…
See, I'm slowly catching on . LAM
What you need is the Animation Support Libraries, without a doubt! This developers kit includes C and Visual Basic Programmers reference manuals for the Windows Player, Fliclib and File Format manuals, Code examples and other support files, POCO and POE reference manuals, and more. You can order this kit directly…

Shows you what I know! . Notice the new subject? LAM
3ds Reference manual, page 9-49: When you use either "Decal" or "Both". the transparency of the bitmap pixels is determined by the contents of the bitmap. If the file contains an alpha channel, the alpha channel is used for transparency. If the file contains only the RGB color channels, the…
#Anybody been ripped off?
Message #187302
There was a message out in the 3ds mailing list from a guy requesting advice on a deal. Someone is trying to sell him 3dsR4 and about 30 IPAS routines (Bones-Pro, etc.) for $450. I told him it was either a scam or hot. Anyone know if anybody got hit…
I have a Cornell Computer System's computer, and have no complaints. Other than the fact that they have gone out of business, that is. LAM
I figured you would be back . On the "sticking" on transforming objects – 3ds is doing heavy polling of the keyboard during this phase. OS/2 sees this as the program not doing anything useful, and reduces the priority of the task. To get around this, you need to go…
Glad you got it working. You can run 2 copies of 3ds at the same time under os/2, but it doesn't work too well. You need to keep the idle sensitivity of the background session way up, or else it will stall in "transforming objects". You need to tell os/2…
Basically, you just need to make sure that you run antivesa.com before starting 3ds. If you never use vesa modes, then you can make the call to antivesa from autoexec.bat. If you do, you can create a little batch file that runs antivesa and then 3ds. To see where to…
Try this. Create a triangle around the characters in 2d shaper, and assign both the triangle and characters. Suck that into lofter and loft away. You may have to build a "backplate", but this should be easier than booleans! LM
I've never heard of this program before. There is a file callled ANTIVE.ZIP in HWare/OpSys (lib 6) which contains a program that will disable the VESA calls to the ATI Mach64 cards. It sounds like what you are trying to do, and it works on my system . LAM
The exact contents of the config.sys file is dependent on your machine configuration. I would stay with your original config.sys, and look at the lines at the bottom of the config.sys file from the .zip file dealing with svga. It's been a while since I've run 3ds under os/2, but…
Look at file 3dsos2.zip in library 6 (HWare/OpSys). This file describes the various settings needed to allow 3ds to run under os/2. LAM
8 bit – 256 colors 16 bit – 65k colors 24 bit – 16.7M colors 48 bit (3ds internal color space) – some humungous number LAM
Look at file VIB3DS.ZIP in library 3. This is the latest version of the Vibrant drivers. ==================================================================== Update to the Vibrant Graphics drivers which shipped with Autodesk 3D Studio R4. Fixes MGA Impression and other bugs. Supports the same cards as v1.0.6.p4. Caution: Use at your own risk. Autodesk disclaims…
Batch rendering is covered in the Advanced Users Guide, pages 7 to 15 (R3 & 4). If you are using R3 or 4, you probably would be more interested in Network rendering (even if you don't have a network). See Advanced Users Guide, pages 20 to 47. LAM
#Siggraph '96 dates??
Message #185050
Does anyone know the dates for next years siggraph? Thanx, LAM
Thanx, I'll have to make a doodle on my documentation here! LAM
Multiply the height times the width to get the total number of pixels. For a given scene, 2x the number of pixels will require about 2x the amount of time to render. So a 640×480 resolution will take about 4 times as long to render as a 320×240 resolution. With…
The Script Extension (TSE) package comes with a script the changes the color of an object based on its position relative to some other objects. The same general idea could be implemented with TSE to do what you want. LAM
Did you ever get your problem with GetMtlNumber "1TST" resolved? LAM
Download file 3ds4-nt.zip from library 6. You should be able to get 3ds to "walk" (as opposed to run) under NT by following the instructions in this file. LAM
When you specify a reflection map, you are telling 3ds exactly what to show as the reflection. This specified reflection is not scene dependent, therefore the level of illumination on the object does not affect the degree of reflection shown. Clear as mud? Thnk of it this way: in the…
Look in your autoexec.bat file, and see if a line in there contains "power.exe". If so, comment out this line. Power.exe is a power-saver program that basically puts your computer to sleep when it thinks nothing is running. Sometimes it thinks wrong . LAM
For all of us with mental relapses, just where in the heck is this ASOFT party Sunday, and at what time? Thanx, LAM
Again: still frame error

I'm working through 3 weeks of messages, so I don't know if you got the problem found and fixed yet. Anyhow, if you need someone to make some test runs on your problem files, drop me an e-mail. LAM
#Java Wishes
Message #178359
I'm sitting here browsing through the latest Dr Dobbs Journal, running light without overbyte, and came across an article on "Java". It's a programming language similar to C and C++, but simpler. A Java program is compiled to a binary format based on the instruction set for a virtual machine.…
There is still called something an "CPU instruction set", even under NT . Theoretically, an application written for NT should be relatively easy to port across machine types (due to the standarized OS interface calls), but it still needs to be recompiled, tweaked, and tested. I'm not sure if MicroSoft…
I don't have sufficient memory to retain all that you have done to your system so far, so I'll go through a list of things I would probably do (in order). 1) run a memory test program. One that beats memory to death. 2) Map out all interrupts, roms, and…
Well, it sounds like you better take Martin up on his offer . Sorry I couldn't be of more help. LAM
As a stupid question , do you get this error message the _first_ time you run the script? Also are you writing information to the console screen (PWindow)? I've had wierd problems like this when I do a Gfx_SetGas, and later open PWindow via a "?". Doesn't effect the first…
Hey Anne, what was that command to change a user's messages into total gibberish? Can I turn in one of my gold stars? Pretty please? LAM
What type of video card do and did you have? The ATI Mach64 series of cards are very slow on initialization – this may be what you are seeing. If you are using a Mach64, download ANTIVE.ZIP and run the enclosed TSR before starting 3ds to speed things up. LAM
Where are you located anyhow? LAM
